  • It is her voice. Howard Hawks (the director of To Have and Have Not) told Peter Bogdanovich in the book "Who the Devil Made It" that it was indeed Lauren Bacall singing "How Little We Know" and NOT Andy Williams.

  • Wasn't he wonderful!!

  • its rumoured its not her voice, but a young Andy Williams dubbed it... but I think its HER!!!

  • @Eddieismybaby Defiantly is her, can hear it in the voice, also she talks about it in her auto biography :)

  • I was named after this sex goddess

  • Wow this lady is so classy, I love watching old movies cuz the women are so classy and voices so similar to my own lol! I was teased as a child for having a deep voice, but now guys like it lol... I wish I could go back in time sometimes, even tho I love it now too..

  • Bogie/Bacall are the best

  • Song written by Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer.

  • such a classic beauty, love the dress

  • A smoker that sings lovely!

  • I love the way she talks, sings everything! =) I wish I had Lauren's voice! I would get all the guys!!!!! haha XD

  • @SamLuvsJamesDean My voice is naturally deep, and mother always told me to lower my voice even more so I can have that sexy voice, but I don't know if at my age (31) I will still be able to do so.

I guess the guys in the Southwest prefer the sweet cutesy voices.

  • @AngieTheSerialDater Your very lucky! I would love and can only imagine what it would be like to have Lauren's voice! She has the sexiest voice ever! Even more than Demi Moore! I can listen to lauren all day! I wanna obtain a husky, low voice like hers; but i don't wanna ruin my voice. My voice isn't high to being with, but trust me guys love voices like Lauren's. Its much more attractive than those whiny kardashian voices! ugh!

  • I've never seen her young. Wow, she was smokin

  • Sings like a drunken Black Man. ;-/

  • I can't believe a woman as beautiful as her was the Witch of the Wastes from Howl's Moving Castle. :3 Amazzing.

  • Is it just me or is her walk giving off masculine energy?

  • i just realized that i am lacking of sex appeal, she was 19 in this video :0

  • @csasongko Lauren was directed step-by-step by Howard Hawks through every scene in this movie. She did each scene six times before it was filmed. She was READY.....just not ready for Bogey!

  • 7 people have no taste

  • The new simpson episode brought me here!

  • @SargeantForge94 haha me too! I wanted to hear her voice.

  • @SargeantForge94 which one?

  • @SargeantForge94 What episode was that?

  • @SamLuvsJamesDean it's in the newest season, forgotten what episode it was.

  • @SargeantForge94 Does the episode show Lauren or something? LOL

  • @SamLuvsJamesDean Dont remember

  • lauren bacall is beautiful. i have to thank my sister for making me watch classic movies. i've seen some of the most beautiful women from back in those days. lauren has to be my favorite.

  • @CarCriticAssessor No one needs a brain to exercise 1st amendment rights; you just proved it.

  • Pure magic!

  • ugh gezz they look like they had great sex.....you can't stage chemistry like that

  • No, this is not Williams. Contrary to rumor, they used Bacall's own voice for this scene.

  • Lauren Bacall was the sexiest woman in all of Hollywood, and what style.

  • A wonderful, enigmatic actress. I adore her. She has it all: class, sophistication, femininity, strength and sex appeal. She was beautiful back then and she is still beautiful today. One of the few stars of the silver screen who has managed to keep her looks. She was utterly gorgeous in The Mirror Has Two Faces. <3

  • @Askimoula Moula, you said everything I was thinking. I agree with you completely.

  • @Askimoula And was robbed by Juliette Binoche, absurd!

  • The most beautiufl Romanian ever.

  • Comment removed

  • That's (a very young) Andy Williams singing (dubbing I guess) "How Little We Know"

  • @victoriaindigo Actually, it's not, despite the long-standing rumor. It's definitely Bacall. They did bring in Williams at first as a backup, but Bacall ended up being able to do all the numbers.

  • @kinseymilkbone No, this is Williams. She sang for herself in The Big Sleep.

  • I think the lady behind the piano is saying the words in French a couple of beats behind Lauren.

  • So sexy, so classy, so elegant. Omg

  • Incredible she was just 19 at the time!!! Just 19!! By far the sexiest and most beautiful woman to ever glare the silver screen.

  • I never realized her voice was this deep. this must be one of my my favourite eras

  • @vaughangarrick

    So, she's a bass.

    =^)

  • Female movie stars back had the kind of faces that really seemed made to look good in black and white. Lost art form, I guess.

  • sooo hooooootttttttttt

  • She sounds a little like demi moore=)

  • @SamLuvsJamesDean Demi Moore would have to sound like Lauren....Lauren was here first..=)

  • @romandanna That's true. my bad =/ haha

  • Bacall is probably the last of the movie stars still with us. What an absolute stunning beauty she was. Surprising how her look of back then seems so contemporary, even today. Now that Elizabeth Taylor has passed, one could make a good case that Bacall is the last of the great female movie stars of the '40s and '50s.

  • @philipatoz And Sophia Lauren. Long live Bacall & Lauren.

  • @BlushGush, yes, how could I forget Sophia! And Doris Day. There are a few male stars left - Kirk Douglas, Mickey Rooney, maybe one or two others. When I say movie stars, I'm really thinking of hugely successful ones active in the '30s - '50s. Who else?

  • this song makes me want to go out and buy an expensive watch, 66' corvette, and french cologne

  • Sex on legs,,,,,,,,,,and was still stunning in her late 70s.

  • omg she is so beautiful! Her hair, her clothes, her face, her poise, everything! This is how a woman is supposed to look! Notice how simple yet chich and form fitting the clothes are, and how natural the makeup is. And her hair is complimentary, and that sultry voice of hers is a turn on! Man, I wish I lived through this era. Couples were probably very romantic back then. Call me old fashioned but I really prefer a lover like Lauren Bacall; just smooth and sultry, classy and romantic.

  • Michelle Monaghan looks like her.

  • Bogie at 0:42. NOT acting. Completely stunned. I bet this is the moment it all started with them.

  • That's maybe the most-beautiful female I've ever witnessed!

  • If she's older than 19 in this shot I'm a hobbit. And he's on the hoary side of 45. I also think she's got at least a couple inches on him. Any man who watches this scene and doesn't have an itch for her is missing something essential. Thanks for posting.

  • @lebarosky This film was shot in '44. Seeing how she was born in '24 she would have been 19-20.

  • wow, she's gorgeous!

  • no wonder that era is called the golden age of hollywood. there are no movies or actors like them anymore.

  • How beautiful is she? Have mercy.....

  • I think if Jodie Foster sang, this is exactly what she would sound like.

  • Absolute classic movie... a favorite of mine from the first time I saw it.

Question: is that Lucile Ball in the background leaning on the piano and singing along??

  • @GoAndMake You're observant. It must be a dead ringer for Lucille Ball, but not Lucy, who worked for MGM, not Warners. Also, it wouldn't do anything for Ball's career to work as backdrop for Bacall's scene, would it?

  • I love her dress. She was so pretty.

  • She was so pretty. Great clip.

  • Love the whispering chorus that accompanies this song. A delight to see Carmichael here, as it is in The Best Years of Our Lives.

  • Woooo i was named after her :D HEHE

Glad i was, she is very beautiful!

  • she's amazing. forever. even now, she's not one of those lame old people. she's cool and she knows whats up!

  • rumour had it that her voice was dubbed by a very young Andy Williams....definately wasnt her singing....great clip though

  • @paulwirral asctually it is lauren's voice singing

  • WOW! Sex on a stick..... That song and her voice go together like her and Boggy did. I have trouble getting that song out of my head!!! Oh, the reason she called him Steve and he called her slim was in reference to the director and his wife. That was their pet names for each other and for some reason the stars used the names and it stuck. Just to clear up the question.

  • Beautiful woman, horrible voice in my opinion. She sounds like a geezer!

  • @e3hammer I would call the voice deep and sexy. I am jewish and will say that for a an american jewish women this women was very hot when she was younger. I cant say that for the majority of American jewish women. Most are very ugly and are unattractive. She has an amazing voice and performance in To have and have not, the big sleep, and key largo. Watch her in those three movies. You may change your opinion of her. A good actor although it is a good thing she met bogie. He helped her

  • @MrJim12341121 Jim, on a side-note, are any Americans just American?

Although my bloodline is split in about 100 different ways, I'm English. Not British, not an Englishman of Scottish decent, just 100% English.

As for the birds voice; I have to disagree mate, she sounds like a fella! Good looking sort with a geezer's voice!

  • Comment removed

  • @e3hammer the answer to that is no. Every american comes from somewhere else with the exception of the Indians. They are the only true americans.

I think bogie was a lucky man to have that tall sexy young thing as a wife. He was 45 and she was 19. I think I will go into acting LOL

  • @MrJim12341121 That's my point though, mate. Most people in the world have a bloodline that stretches, however they are where they're born. My ex was a Yank who described herself as Irish. She's about as Irish as I am Chinease and knew nothing about the country. In fact her bloodline dated to Northern Ireland therefore if anything she was Northern Irish/Ulsterman/British (one and the same).

Bogie was lucky, but sticking your face on film and having money in your pocket does 'it' for women.

  • so much prettier and sexier than trashy slutbag marilyn monroe.

  • @stefanybody Yes. Lauren Bacall has class. But bogy is the greatest. If it was not for Bogy her career may not have developed to the level it did. All actors would rise to their highest level when acting with the best, Humphrey Bogart.

  • This film has as much to do with Hemingway's novel as cherry heering has to do with hearing cherries, but Lauren Bacall is so scrumptious that only a fool would care. I'll even tolerate the lip synching and the would-be smart musical number. Was she ever given a vehicle that made full use of her talents?

  • How little we know about vocal technique, it seems. She soumds like giuseppe taddei!

  • Beautiful! Thank you so much for a great upload!

  • I love this film! Bogart and Bacall are my favourite actress and actor, respectively.

  • Lauren Bacall and Judy Garland.

that's all I've got to say.

  • According to Idbm, director Howard Hawks said Andy Williams did sing it in case Bacall wasn't up to it, but the version we hear is all Bacall.

  • Sex on legs.

  • The best.

  • Funny how her voice goes deeper when singing. What a gal!

  • @BigJiggety Doesn't sound like her voice. I think lip syncing

  • LMAO...actually it's Andy williams singing and Lauren Bacall moving her lips!

  • I still cannot believe she was only 19 years old. "Baby" of course, as Bogart called her. An absolute marvelous talent. What a great chemistry and love story to follow.

  • I was listening to NPR public radio's "Wait Wait don't tell Me" Hosted by Peter Sagil and announcer Carl Castle. Andy Williams was one of their guests, and he said when he was 14 years old he sang this song for Lauren Bacall. It's not her singing it's Andy Williams!

  • @markgauslow True, it was the young Andy singing for Betty. Although according to her, he just dubbed a few notes, not the whole song. We may never really know. My feeling is that it's all Andy. Still, she was gorgeous, and in her own way, more sensual than even Monroe would be later.

  • Bogie & Baby! They melt the screen...

LOVE their scenes together; one of my fav. Hollywood couples.

  • i wish my voice was a sexxy and deep as bacall's.

  • Her lips don´t really match the lyrics at times... not that it really matters...

  • That Woman was so sexy...Bogie was one lucky Guy! These Actresses today will never be anywhere near what a Woman like this ever was

  • @parkman35 19 freakin years old. They don't make 'em like that anymore. They stayed married for 13 years after this until his death.

  • @Elfinesmom 18 was the adult age back then...they were quite the couple...always in the limelight...

  • @parkman35 I wasn't saying she was too young. It's definitely an age gap and what would now be considered too young but it was true, it was sexy, and it lasted.

  • @Elfinesmom Oh no..I know you weren't saying that she was too you. By today's standards that'd be an issue..a 19 year old Girl in that situation although the way things are going these days, you wonder what would be the big deal?

It was a great Hollywood relationship that was amazing...

  • @Elfinesmom I was and am amazed a Lauren Bacall . She was no little goldigger or anything. She stuck with Bogart to the end.

  • Everybody seems to compliment her voice. Little do you all know her voiced was dubbed. It was dubbed by a certain teenager named Andy Williams!

  • Saw her in the movie and thought she was absolutely stunning! I mean look at her! She looks so good and hot and absolutely amazing! And at 19.

*sighs* Whatever happend to all the beauties and class of the 40's and 50's. These ladies wre stunning (Lauren, Rita, Marilyn, Anita, etc(. Even the guys were amazing.

  • I LOVE her!!

  • Me too. Bogart was quite the actor .. Lauren = what a babe

  • Beautiful

  • Sexiest woman ever.

  • Can you believe she was only 19-20 years old in this film?!

  • She had "It"!

  • She still has it! Even at 86!

  • Sparks between Bogie & Bacall were flying all over this flim! They looked great.

  • wow - in this scene miss bacall comes even close to rita hayworths gilda scene - 2 great women with an incredible charisma...unf. lauren bacall lost very quickly her youthful beauty - 8 years later already she looked very different in "How to marry a millionaire" of 1953 her second best film !

  • @oentschi to be fair, she did get married and have kids in that 8 year timespan.

  • so did hayworth and she looked great in her comeback film "salome" in 1953 same year as "Millionaire" !

  • It is Andy WILLIAMS, a teenager then. Miss Bacall does look smokin hot!

  • Lauren Bacall was so sexy! And not a bad singer at all. I don't understand some of the dialouge in this movie. Walter Brennan calls Bogie "Harry" but Lauren calls him "Steve"! Did Bogie have a split personality in this movie? All I know is Lauren (who was only 19 when she filmed this!) was strictly from hubbahubbasville! What a dish! You can't blame Bogie (almost 25 years her senior) for falling in love with her! THANKS for posting this delightful clip from one of my favorite movies!

  • @JubalCalif 'Steve' comes from Stevedore. She calls him that cuz he works mostly in the docks...

  • @pelotillox

Bogie's caharacter is not a stevedore. (a crew member who takes care of a ship's engine). He's the owner & operator of his own boat, hiring himself out to private parties for fishing jaunts in the nearby Caribbean.

  • @JubalCalif Thanx captain obvious, I know he is not a stevedore. But she calls him 'Steve' as a mockery to his working in the docks.

  • Sublimissime Lauren! What a strange and seducing voice, and what a look!

Thanks for giving us this beautiful scene from the also beautiful film To have and have not. Very beautiful songs in it too.

  • Andy Williams did sing this for dubbing, but that was not used. You don't have to listen long to know it's a young an untrained Bacall.

  • This is very special territory. Thanks very much.

  • HER DRESS IS FUCKIN BAAAAD! WORK IT!

  • Lauren Bacall's debut. No wonder Bogie fell for her!

But I wonder who the dark haired girl to Hoagy's left is (she's a doll) and what is she saying?

  • I agree. There was a chemistry there no doubt!!!!

  • The dark haired woman is speaking in Spanish, but it is mostly drowned out by the music --- towards the end, if you are familiar with the language, you can clearly hear her saying "Mueve la cintura, chica, meuve la Cintura. Ay chamaca!" which roughly translates into "Move that waist, girl, move that waist. Oh, young girl!". It might just be my imagination, but the phrases seem to be uttered in a sensual, longing sort of way.

  • @BrickPa

Yeah, this is a year late, but this is supposed to be a club in France, and I think that woman is translating. I don't speak French, but I have the movie.

  • I've never understood why she calls Bogart "Steve" in this film, when he is called Harry by all the others.

  • It's called a tease, Cricket. Hey, the pianist's called Cricket, too, though he's really a Hoagy. And Bogie calls Lauren Slim probably cos she is slim, so that's not really irony, just giving as good as you get... Maybe it happens this way...

  • Yes, I suppose you are right!

  • Comment removed

  • Stunninig looks & personalitybut just check out those shoulder pads!

  • She was the DAME of her time..

    friggen stunning woman!

  • I read somewhere that in the old hollywood actors who had a too high voice were advised to go scream and scream until vocal chords broke up so they could have that low husky voice. anyone could confirm this or tell me more about this?

  • that might be true. but i read that the director wanted her to always have a 'low voice'. he said there was nothing more off-putting than a woman who 'screeches'. So betty had to practice talking low no matter how emotional a scene was.

  • Comment removed

  • He only did the high notes.

  • she sings like a male

  • Loved it!! ;)

  • She kinda reminds me of Jessica Savitch in some way..

  • she's beautiful, but her singing voice is awful

  • Lauren gets me warm & stickly down under.

  • They should have got someone else to do her singing but besides that they must have all been weak at the knees for her. She is gorgeous.

  • she's singing so low.

  • what do you mean her singing, shes clearly not singing as you can clearly see her lips moving before and after the words come out

  • Im reading her book,

she is singing, but she recorded it and it was played back.

    but she is singing

  • cause i have nothing better to do.

    is good though, =D

  • I love that part at the end, when both ARE like pure KIDS in LOVE, all giddy...=)

They are my favorite couple of all time, that's for certain. =)

I get all warm all over...with this movie and the culmination of this scene. =)

  • those were the days and the Dames knew it

  • Wow Lauren, she´s truly awesome! Definitely one of the most beautiful women i´ve ever seen.

  • dont know what you guys are talking about. i think her voice is unique and fantastic. i'd rather listen to her than "great" singers like Kelly Clarkson that make me yawn. Bacall makes me turn my head.

  • I can't lie and say she sings well but her singing voice simply fit her

  • her voice is one of the reasons he was famous

  • i <3 her voice.

    its uber awsum.

    its so different.

    i <3 it!!!!

  • She is very beautiful, but, why is her voice so husky? Did she have some sort of problem with her voice when she was a girl?

  • She has a vocal disorder that was named after her. "Bogart-Bacall syndrome"' (or BBS) is a form of muscle tension dysphonia most common in professional voice users (actors, singers, TV/radio presenters, etc) who habitually use a very low speaking pitch. BBS is more common among women than men and has been blamed on "social pressure on professional women to compete with men in the business arena".

  • I know I am gonna get alot of flack for this but...she has the beauty but the voice...Um no.

  • what's wrong with the voice

  • Ohhh yes, i thought her voice was a joke ... but no ... no over dubbing .... Whyyyyyyyyyy ??????

such a marvelous face with a voice of a pissed off man !

    It's unfair !
