  • i ate a coldcut sandwich today

  • For a 1 million dollars you can buy a Russian Mig or a variance of different supersonic aircraft's and de-weaponize them for civilian use. All military aircraft's are considered experimental anyway because they are not subject to the strict safety tests of the FAA or other international flight associations. People fail to realize thought that the initial purchase of a supersonic or jet aircraft is the least expensive part. Flight, maintenance and basic insurance costs are astronomical.

  • Poor video. To much editing that shows zilch!

  • to those who dont know this plane was a total POS death trap that was highly illconceived and under engineered

  • @Zeksteve actually, for sub sonic flight it was a great plane and one still exists. if it would have gone forward as a subsonic aircraft, there would be several hundred in use today. but it was under engineered for above. M.95. I had a deposit for two of the aircraft until it was canceled from lack of funds and the accidents.

  • @b101aa2 none are flight worthy and out of the 5 planes 3 crashed from falling apart in the air.

So if you want a plane that has a 60% chance of falling apart this is the plane for you.

But you know what with todays technology this plane is possible, the VLJ power plants that are out today would be perfect for this plane,

  • @Zeksteve there is one in canada that sits in a private aircraft museum and is flight ready at any time and does fly regularly. the accidents all ocurred by shock vibrations during the "transonic" enveloped above mach .95 while attempting above mach 1 flight capabilities. there were no issues whatsoever in the mach .80-.90 range.

powerplants, the pw-j85 was a good choice. at mach .85, the aircraft has a range of 1100 nm at FL29 and only 60% power. at take off, it could climb at 10k+ fpm

  • @b101aa2 ah didnt know it happened at transonic, Just poor aerodynamics then, i know they had to strengthen the plane but doesnt matter how strong they make it if there is uneven and interopted compression on the leading edges.

How much did you expect to spend on this kit? The viperjet seems cool yet for 300k for a unassembled airframe and no avionics nor engine seems quite a rip off

  • @Zeksteve all up total with basic ifr package flight ready, the aircraft was suppose to cost about $1 million flat. which for jet aircraft new, that's pretty cheap.

even i agree, bad engineering went into materials for the shock waves encountered during transonic. if you notice the very thing rudder and elevator, that's where the break ups happened. ya.... simply needed to be much stronger and robust.

  • Black & white? Da-FuQ!?

  • Looks like one of the F-16 prototypes.

  • Sure, jim Bede is an awesome designer but he needed Burt Rutans help to finish this design Burt Rutan is just a better Designer. but Bede made homebuilts possible. it is still an awesome plane though!

  • @NiKoLKooki burt rutan is good too, but he was just 1 member of the bd-5 team. he didn't design the whole aircraft, just bits and piece and flight testing.

  • Holy fuck is this video from the 1800's?

  • Imagine the pussy this would get you?

  • What license do you need for this? Is just a Private Pilot Licence good enough?

  • @IkTheNew you would need a type rating...but this aircraft is no longer available

  • rip test pilot

  • Why not all aluminum?

  • dear santa...

  • You mean sub sonic plane...

  • Good shooting target For MILITARY. MILITARY WILL BUY A LOT THIS PLANE FOR SHOOTING TARGET EXPERIMENT NAVY.

  • 8 people were rejected by the FAA

  • Dunno about dominating, but goddamn I'd love to have one. Too bad none are still flying.

  • The design looks a lot like a non stealthy F-35.

  • Creativity and lack of commitment and responsability lead to cases like this. BD-12 had the same bad fate. Mr. Jim Bede seems to me like the wrong guy with the right skills and talents. What a shame that most of his designs failed just because of lack of attention to crucial details.

  • whats the cheapest helicopter/airplane avalible for personal use? im poor

  • @20stevieray the paper airplane

  • nice engineering..

  • sure, if allowed to be produced, every terrorist with a garage would have built one by now and loaded it with explosives and a map to the White House or nuclear plant. Some things aren't meant to be available to the public.

  • sure, if allowed to be produced, every terrorist with a garage would have built one by now and loaded it with explosives and a map to the White House or nuclear plant. Some things aren't meant to be available.

  • are you shitting me because they had one fatal crash that is the name of game when it comes to testing and designing aircraft although they could have put an eject seat in it lol. third world countries would have been eating them up. low cost, low maintenance, super sonic if barely but still not bad. they would have mounted weapon systems on them and found new ways of killing each other. especially with a price under one mill compared to a raptors 120 mill or the b-2 at 3.2 Billion

  • I return to defecate on this tomfoolery.

I quote from the NTSB on LAX 03LA092:

"According to the airplane's operating limitations, the accident airplane was limited to a maximum airspeed not to exceed 300 knots calibrated airspeed."

The accident pilot confirmed the MAYDAY and stated that, he was out of control and that he thought he "was disintegrating."- 6 minutes into his flight.

Go to a morgue and see what scraps your beloved & kin must identify as their loved one. Then grow the hell up.

  • Why won't someone pick up the R&D?

Simple- it is a terrible idea. What form of exceptional stupidity allows novice and amateur pilots flying about in essentially cruise missiles?

Kinetic energy from impact alone would be enormous.

It is beyond the realm of the sane. USA allows too much freedom to fools & idiots who should otherwise be locked in insane asylums. The proverb is true- the USA truly is the asylum run by the lunatics- more dollars than sense [sic cents] . Gott in himmel sakrament!

  • @SignoroIncognito Really?! A terrible idea huh? So I guess we should stop NASCAR racing to huh? Maybee we should stop driving anything that goes faster than 50 MPH? The USA allows to much freedom?! It's obvious you are not an American Citizen, and if by some misfortune of fate you are, let me tell you something, This is what REAL AMERICANS dream of owning. If I could affoard one of these things, not only would I have one, but I would definately be improving them!!

  • Wow a single engined jet fighter with two vertical stabilizers? It's rare or should i say they dont exist(except the F-35). I wonder what advantages it may have over a single tail stabilizers! Since the project cost was around 1 million i think it wasn't all that technologically advanced even though i'm dying to see in action maybe in some poor country airforces!

  • Give some canards, thrust vectoring, and 1:1 thrust to weight ratio :D

  • i cant watch these too often.. makes me want something ill never afford hahaha

  • Hey freaks! Mee too, I just love them aircraft!

  • I'm thinking of building an aircraft in my garage for a project. I know this sounds absurd, but planes are my passion. So do you guys know how a plane like this is designed so that its flight dynamics are reasonably sound and safe? And also, can you tell me how a plane is fabricated and constructed (i.e. what the frame should look like; how the sheet metal skin should be attached; etc.)?

Any little help would be appreciated.

    JDK

  • Hi I was thinking about allmost the same projects but made by monumental modults in Carbon/kevlar technology. I'm trying to make 3D Carbon frames allmost the same like in bikes but not 2D... I dont think plane have to be as heavy as is right now.

  • @JDKMM7 Join the local EAA,learn before you try to build

  • Its not absurd dude Im a commercial pilot and an aviation junkie so I understand! but its all about research. Learn as much as you can I am also designing a homebuilt and now I just need the money :) Like Ted said either join the eaa and or go the the website and watch ALL the construction vids like I did you will learn alot. Also type in RV-10 construction in google and you can look at hundreds of sites were garage builders document every step of thier build with pictures.

  • @JDKMM7 Keep thinking, kid. I doubt you could build a decent remote-control boat, let alone a real plane. SHEESH! Did you get into mommy's pot? That's for cramps, son. Get your head outa your ass and get some experience building scale-model planes, first. Try something cheaper and safer and closer to the ground, like bicycles.

  • @2012listo No need to be a dick about it. Your profile says 41, I'd think a 41 year old would be a bit more mature than your post. So, in short, YOU get your head out of your ass and learn some common courtesy like a decent human being.

  • @Kriegsarschmann But dude, did you read what this kid wrote? C'mon, he's never built anything. NOTHING. Go check for yourself. And everyone needs to get their heads out. Say the alphabet backwards. See? Get your head out. Really. When you can say the alphabet back and forth, and swing it, you will have some proof of clarity and focus. Not until then. PROOF. And chicken.

  • unfortunetaly it isnt on market. you cant buy it. 3 of 5 prototype crashed and both which remain is unflyable. Thats Sad. If I had over 2 milions $ I would like to buy one.. The ' EM10 bielik ' is in the same cllas I think, but will had problems too.

  • Only 5 were built, including the prototype. Three were lost via in-flight breakups, killing their pilots. The other two are in museums, declared "unflyable".

  • That's why wind tunnel testing is so important.

  • The problems wouldn't have been revealed in a wind tunnel. They were structural.

  • Of course it would've, why do you think thorough wind tunnel tests are carried out over and over by any decent corportation before the designs are finalized?

Not to mention mechanical shear testing,

there are so many tests that need to be done before an aircraft should be allowed to fly.

That's why it's almost impossible to insure a test pilot, due to the inherently

high risk of death from improperly

    designed or tested airplanes.

  • why can't a new company pick up the research & development and make one today?

  • They tried! With the Fox and Monitor Jets. But the market was too limited to justify the cost, and, after testing revealed many structural problems (resulting in 2 deaths) and poor performance, the project was cancelled.

  • Oh really? Two deaths! That is terrible.

  • @itsmonti1 well when it did break the sound barrier, proto 2, it broke up in flight. Better off redesigning a new airplane rather than one which is known to break up.

  • @itsmonti1 Techincally it is very possible to do so. However, money dictates what get's produced and what doesn't. Designing an aircraft is a very tough job, where you have to consider so much stuff you wouldn't even dream of (unless u got extensive knowledge about the aviation industry). You also have to get the plain certified, where you have to prove all sorts of stuff to the authorities. This process is sooo expensive, and it prevents alot of developement of new aircrafts.

  • "Very very solid..." ....NOPE!

  • It's too bad they were not able to figure out the issues with this aircraft. It would be nice to have one on time share.

  • Mom, Dad, I want one for this christmas!!!

  • @itsmonti1 Dream

  • i want one.

  • I want to buy one !

  • @19BlackLord91

I have found one for sale it costs 499.999 dollars, unfortunately its probably the last one remaining so its expensive.

  • From the Bedecorp website: "We are looking at a revised version of the BD-10 that would permit the use of the more modern, highly efficient fan engines. We also did a considerable amount of design work on the six place version of this aircraft. We have designated this aircraft the BD-11."

  • I have a friend whos father was a t38 instructor pilot in the USAF. He was looking at buying the kit for this airplane and flew in it in 94 and was impressed by its flying qualities. Later it suffured a fatal crash because of design problems and was srapped.

  • Comparing it to the Viper Jet Mk 2. I'd be sending my order there way. The Viper is something else.

  • this is a decade before the viper was even a concept yet. cheers

  • Comment removed

  • Well they should put a few more video's up on here and have a jet off.

  • @b101aa2 looks like the brits T-6 trainer

  • I don't think Civil Air Patrol would be able to have one of these.

    C/SSgt Payton

  • Jim Bede is jinxed, he might as well just give up. He robbed Peter to pay Paul during the BD-5 project, leaving all BD-5 customers to fend for themselves, engine-wise. Engines from Hondas, VWs and Subarus found their ways into many BD-5 kits since then. His other projects haven't fared well, neither. Snake-oil at its finest.

  • I agree Jim Bede was and as far as I know is still the best snake oil salesman. Didn't he try to do something with a futuristic car

  • Wow, someone thumbed me down. I guess that means I'm right. Now now, Mr. Bede, no need to give me such negative critique, you can go back to selling cars now. It seemed to be your best game anyway, judging your personality and criminal history.

  • Man my Civil Air Patrol squadron could have really loved to get on of those. :P Oh well.

    C/Amn Kim

  • T-T no need to rub it in pl0x

  • Really nice pilot attitude.... :x

  • they should manufacture a bd-5 with towo seats a little bigger, then i would save for it xD

  • Want...

  • So when exactly has it ever gone SUPERSONIC?

  • nope, from what i read it went 0.84(?) of it. subsonic.

structurally the material or something would disintegrate when it went high speeds.

pity, this craft has a lot of potential if fixed up now.

  • cpx- Yeah- I understand that it never has and was always intended as a ( High ) subsonic aircraft. But the title of the video, as many are Bede headers is misleading. I am 47 years old and I remember my dad (USAF retired and lic A&P)getting the first magazines and advertisements extolling the then new BD5- I also remember him saying "with that engine and Jim Bede- it will never work"

  • Well considering it was made of 60% 2024-T3 aluminum that is understandable... Basically a flying Coke can.

  • how much??

  • bd-10's were to cost a bit under $1 million total.

  • it looks like a mini fulcrum

  • or, a BD aircraft. lol

  • I have one doubt: what's a HOMEBUILT jet?

  • Homebuilt = you buy plans and/or a kit and assemble your aircraft. The kit can have all of the parts premanufactured so all you are doing is assembly... or it can essentially be a huge box of sticks or in the case of an all metal plane... stacks of sheet metal.

  • or it can be like a kr-2s and comes with a pamphlet, a couple of blocks of foam, a parts list, and some sticks that don't fit. built one 10 yrs ago. i had to order all the stuff from aircraft spruce & supply cause nothing that came with, worked. for 20k total, still can't beat it. lol

  • is there any way to stream line the canapee to remove the hump or bump.

  • also what does it cost as a kit.and all parts come with it but the engine.

  • Frome the BedeCorp website: "We are looking at a revised version of the BD-10 that would permit the use of the more modern, highly efficient fan engines. We also did a considerable amount of design work on the six place version of this aircraft. We have designated this aircraft the BD-11." Any idea how recently that was posted, and if they actually are working on it (sometimes people forget to remove things from websites).

  • has to be out dated, because the bd-17 prop aircraft was 2000. That one looked about like a kr-2s but a little wider fuse.

  • Bede is a talented guy with a horrific track record for delivering promised aircraft. I have been following him and his aircraft since 1980. While his planes pass the wow factor, he has failed to deliver anything in the homebuilt market other than terrific dreams. As for the BD-11, don't get your hopes up. I am still waiting for the BD-12 (a bd-5 with a certified engine . . .) Bede seems to always "run out of development money.

  • Don't know about solving the problems in a couple of days, but another attempt to build a jet under 1 million, won't happen. (see all prices on VLJ being built, all around 3 mil) I don't know about FAA certification of Cessna PP with 500 hours on a 172 getting permission to fly one, either. So cost for training, insurance, etc. grow and grow. BD made the James bond jet in Octopussy (or kit) and that never really took off, either, but keep trying!!!

  • the whole problem was the structural build aft the turtle back. it wasn't built to take transonic shockwaves. one with extensive engineering knowledge and understanding of aircraft construction could fix that easily enough in a short period of time. it didn't proceed forward because Jim Bede went bankrupt and had to sell the plane to a canadian company...

  • I just want to buy the jetpilot helmet. Where can I get one?

  • There are numerous companies that sell them, buy any avaition magazine and there will be advertisments in the back "Wings, Airpower, Air Classics,Flypast, etc. They are expensive however!!

  • Whatever became of the Potez-Heinkel CM-191B?

That ship seated four, used less power too.

  • hey i,ll be glad if any 1 can tell me frm i can get da kit to make dis or any catelog to make dis or related to home built jet planes

  • bd-micro dot com makes the bd-5J

  • where can you get the kits to make this

  • viper-aircraft dot com

  • where can you get the kits to make this
