I have to disagree with OP here. Maybe its just me, but I was totally expecting something bad to happen. The catfag was very too happy and such an enabler. When Madoka and Mami had their intimacy, I knew right there, Mami was dead. Similar sequences happened in series like NGE. It was foreshadowed so much. Black hair said the witch was more powerful. Catfag too happy and wanting them to make the contract. Madoka giving heed to Black Hair's original warning.

his fur is torn. It's red, and his ears can resemble horns, this reinforces the idea that Kyuubey is evil and, infact, the devil. Homura is actually a good guy because she doesn't want Madoka or Sayaka to die. If the witches ceased to be created through curses, then there would be no need for Puella Magi and contracts, and thus, there would be no need for Homura to fight witches to purify her Soul Gem, because she wouldn't need to transform. It's confusing at first, but give it some thought.

Mami died because she was hyped up on "the Power of Friendship," and froze when Charlotte (the Witch of Sweets Consumption), transformed, since this was a strange reaction after being hit with Tiro Finale. She was frozen in fear, more than ever (Even though she smiles, she's actually VERY scared), and thus, Charlotte ate her. There is a possibility that she can be revived without a wish, but it is unconfirmed in the anime if her hairpin was destroyed or not (Note: Mami's Soul Gem is a hairpin.)

I had been spoiled of Mami's death in this episode before I had even started watching the show but I didn't feel like it would effect me that much even if I did start watching it. What I didn't take into account was how much I would grow to love her character. So even though it didn't surprise me it still was shockingly sad.

Also, through her death, Mami actually became one of the most popular characters of this season (check Devianart and anime forums to see her popularity). Also, GEN UROBUCHI does not write bad story. His stories are very shocking, sudden and controversial, but many people like it because of that and he has a lot of fans just for that.

Knowing shows like Gurren Lagann and movies like Star Wars, It was obvious Mami was going to be the one to die as soon as she established herself in the Mentor Archetype.
