In addition to a history lesson, what makes this song so good is its simplicity. It's clean and transparent; you can't hate them for making a good jam on a classic song.
This song brings back SOO many memories, good and bad. Either way it takes me back to a time when I was happier and free of pain, struggle, and heartache.
It's genius that you guys used the Candi Staton sample. She's a true legend. Beautiful, soulful song. I wonder what it would sound like if you did a second version with Patsy Cline sampled. Hmmmm
OK, I SWEAR this sounds just like the music from Sling Blade... you know the part where Karl is walking around town, seeing the gorilla outside the vacuum store and all that? I can't be the only person thinking this.
@kneedragger81 That's because they merged Candi Staton's version of "He Called Me Baby" which is a totally different song reworked with their song "Kandi" as a sort of virtual duet, so that is her voice interspersed throughout the song. 8/14/10 Mile high music festival in Denver! Absolutely fantastic live. The drummer really makes a huge contribution when the bass is booming in concert.
this is a remake, from the 1970's Candi Stanton & Pasty Cline-- I'm not sure if the guy is singing the chorus-- It sounds like the Candi Stanton, Thats just what I hear.
@sspykb - That is what I am hearing as well... I knew the song from back in the day and when I started hearing it on the local station I kept thinking... I know that voice. Nice job boys...
@bonesgirl96 definetely!! took me some time to find this version and now i keep listening to it whole day... I love the lyrics - it fits for Booth and Bones
@ontheroadrn How do you interpret this song as sexy? It's seems to me he is asking his girl what happened with that guy he heard about from Joe? and she says he called me baby all night long and he wonders why he is not enough. It's about heartbreak and infidelity. At least that's what I get out of it. I like the song though, it's definitely moving.
Love the story. Candi Staton has an amazing voice. Love how they mix her song with theirs to create a unique story line. The acoustic mix, this dudes soulful sound and Candi Staton's voice is a remarkable achievement. Patsy Cline and Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded this tune back in the early 60's and mid 50's...but this redux sets a new high water mark.
I can't wait to go get their CD today. I heard this song a couple of times on VH1, I said "Wow, who is that?" Love them. Looked at their tour schedule, Not coming to Seattle area, bummer.
It's been such a long time since I've immediately fell in love with a song, like I did with this one. I heard this for the first time less than 10 minutes ago on Mark and Brian, and I can't stop listening to it! Absolutely amazing song...
Unique drum set up, The drummer is also triggering the vocal samples from an octopad. I think more drummers ought to re-think the standard drum kit and change it up like this. It is part of what makes this group sound so different.
This is a killer song! It includes a sample of Candi Staton's "He Called Me Babe", which was in turn and cover/remake of Patsy Cline's song "He Called Me Baby" - although Candi changed it up a lot. Ella Washington also did a version of it, which sort of bridged the gap between Patsy's version and Candi Staton's.
I cannot seem to get enough of this version of this song. it is sooooo touching and real, can't get it out of my head.Don't even know this band but again, hands down....the best thing I've heard, thank you for making me feel.
Tennessee Ernie Ford, Charlie Rich and Patsy Cline recorded this song even before Candi Staton covered it. Now this awesome awesome group has put it finally over the top. A perfect demonstration of and about the blurring lines between LOVE and OBSESSION (whch I can never keep straight either).
I love this song. I heard it on 97.3 radio in San Francisco. The next day I was trying to remember the name of this song so I decided to turn it to the same radio station and believe it or not it was playing again. Awsome voice and very nice voices from the lead singer and Candi Staton. Very smooth and sexy!!
Very sexy song...reminds me a bit of Eddie Money singing with Ronnie Spector on "Take Me Home Tonight". I don't know if Candi Stanton is as hot as Ronnie was then, though.
I'm amazed not to heard more about them as we've had "plain white t's" and perhaps even "the script" however i think One Eskimo are way way better deeper more soulful etc I can't stop listening to this track and the animation is amazing!!!
A chap called Rhudi probabilly 2 yrs ago gave me a sample cd of this group. And i love this song its just fantastic i play it in my cottage in Welford Northants very loud. Lets hope they make it big just like Pink Floyd
3 months ago i predicted this had a shot at being a break out song for these guys but the only place I hear it is on XPN out of Philly and not that often. Shame this is not crossing over to the pop stations, but hip hop is the thing these days, with classic rock avoiding new talent and basically public radio left to carry the torch of alternative and even simple pop gems like this one.
I have yet to hear it on mainstream radio but XPN plays it a few times a week and included this band in some advertising of cd's they were promoting. Yeah, the godisdeadagain name gets me invited to all the great atheist parties, even though i'm not quite an atheist, and expelled from the christian ones. oh well!

there r several version of this song over the last 40 yrs, this being my favorite. Great mix of Black & Whie soul with a twist on the original Country. Easy to play by ear but most great sounds are quite simplistic.
I love how they reworked Candi's soulful bluesy rendition of Patsy Clne into a dialogue between the cheating heart and the pain of being hurt... beautiful.
here after Bob Lefsetz linked it as i imagine many others are. a bit simplistic, repetitive, obvious vamp, but certainly gets the analog warmth and heartfelt, intimate vibe pat. not sure if i'll be listening again any time soon but they do create a great intimate feel.
Tried some wine, no need for headphones with my stereo system, so close to being an epic song. Great beat, awsome voice but still don't get it! Just needs alittle more vocals to make a better relationship to real life, unless its just refering to something abstract.
Fact : the female vocal wasnt / isnt recorded by a live person --it is purely a sampled track...well done though ! Oh the glorious magic that can be created in the studio, an art in itself. ~
