Haha, I was just reading some of your comments you replied to some of those idiots with the smart alec criticism, and I would just like to say, thank you for making my day. :)
i LOVE this, but i have a question, you show four children, but when it comes to the school there are 3, 3 babies, 3 ppl for the marriage. im not judging, im just curious as to why. but i love it
@AmberLee04281990 Thanks Amber! You're the first person on Youtube to ever ask that question! (Everyone else just keeps talking about how the green box isn't green enough for them or something...)
We never planned to make a music video but were listening to the song and thought it would be fun. So we started with 4 kids but it was kinda close to bedtime and Sarah-from-next-door's dad came and took her home after we shot the first scene! That's why only 3 kids for the rest of the video :)
Weeds has created like 20 covers of this song, and they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all sound just the same. Then people take these covers which are played by different bands but are still all clearly the same tired song, and they argue about which one is best, and buy covers of a song that has already been done a dozen or so times, not even realizing the intense irony of the situation. Listen to the lyrics again and take another look around the inside of your metaphoric box.
Very clever! Thanks for doing this! Malvina Reynolds (the composer) would have smiled (even though you changed to a minor key here and there to make it sound more foreboding).
@ThisModestBiscuit The end and the fact that the flash loops in the end just makes the point stronger. Great flash all around, but the kid fleeing made the song seem a lot more dark.
@MouseyRouse I think he catches the creepy hide significate of the song. Don't you?
It's like you can sing this song as a happy song, but then you are not getting what you are singing. It's more about the stablishment and how we all are expected to be the same, like killing the creativity becoming all of us in machines working, paying, and making children to work and pay, and so with a smile in our box mind because that's what is stablished.
@YesImAnAwesomeTroll An astute observation, though the word "by" is only used in the description, and it's in the phrase, "you can buy other songs by The Decemberists here..." I don't in any way intend to suggest that the The Decemberists authored the lyrics. I notice that your name says you are AWESOME... Just sayin'.
@YesImAnAwesomeTroll um this version really is this song has been done by many bands Malvina Reynolds wrote it but has been covered by bands like Linkin Park and Rise Against
@Wanteddreadandalive Yeah, that's a fair point. The answer is that we didn't plan to make this video at all, just a night of babysitting turned into listening to The Decemberists' version of the song, which then lead to one hour of brainstorming/collecting props from around the house and making a video before bed time. Finding the cardboard for the boxes was hard enough...! Anyway, it looked more "green" in real life :)

i love the "and the children go to summercamp, and then to the university..." part of the video. I kind of burst into laughter when the boxes appeared over the baby dolls. good song. I really don't ever get tired of it, no matter who covers it. The Decemberists cover it weirdly, but it's still a great song. With a great point. Love you Malvina, thank you for this song.
@0oTheWayToDawno0 Yeah, it's a pretty popular folk song. It was written by Malvina Reynolds back in 1962 to describe post-WWII life in the USA. The perspective on higher education brought forth here is interesting considering she not only got bachelor's and master's degrees in her lifetime, but also a doctorate. She began her songwriting career at 40 years old, after she'd earned her degrees, so it's not like hers is an uninformed opinion.

The Decemberists are amazing, and Colin the best living lyricist, but unfortunately this song was written as a Communist Poem in the '50's, not by Colin Meloy.
It's something Colin would write though! But he's certainly not the best living lyricist. What about Bob Dylan & Neil Young? xD, either way, Colin is great and so are the Decemberists. Their version of this song is by far the best (though the Shins' compare nicely).
It was written as a song in the 1962 by Malvina Renynolds, The Decemberists add in the last verse which isn't in the original. It isn't a communist poem. It was against urbanisation but was never specifically communist, after all the point of communisim (simplified of course) surely is that all people are the same?
Tom Lehrer said it was "The most sanctimonious song ever written". Probably because he was jealous, wishing he wrote it. Also, "I Write the Songs" hadn't been written yet, to blow all others out of competition for sanctimony.
@StanleyBradshaw I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people.

2. those aren't university graduates; they are children wearing cardboard mortarboards
3. those aren't golf clubs; they are plastic croquet mallets
4. that's not a doctor; that's just a little girl holding some basic medical supplies
etc.
