The point of history is to teach others not just about dates but to teach others the mistakes of those in the past. @rmh941 I Know but its like living a lie. My grandfather uncle and father are german. All three have served in the United states military. German soldiers were not allowed to disobey orders. They would be qaurt martialed or face summary execution. I believe in the US desertion is still a capital offense but only carried out 2-3x in our history.

I completely agree there. But it wasnt possible. The germans read the same books our troops did. Deploy smoke grenades for cover while moving, thus shoot into smoke.
I just looked it up. Turns out it was a mistake on the part of the US commander orchestrating this landing. He got chastised for the neglect later since it should've been a give-away. They routinely used smokescreens to drop paratroopers without enemies opening up on them the moment they hit the ground in the Pacific.
Of course the Germans knew there would be allied soldiers there, but hitting a mark at that distance is hard enough without being unable to see half the beach.
Im not disagreeing that the smoke isnt effective or that it wasnt used. Im saying that on D-Day it was pretty much impossible to use effective smoke screen, like I said, the allied bombings of German defenses on June 5 didnt hit most of the intended targets, we were storming a beach we though had been extensively hit, another reason why smoke wasnt used.
Looks like it was filmed on a calm day. The actual D-Day weather was worse. Everyone was seasick after being in the little boats for hours but here just a few are puking.
If your family, your country, the world, and your entire way of life was at risk. You would do anything to prevent losing everything you hold dear. In the 21st century, we are safe in our homes, we dont know world war, or suffering on a genocidal scale. So of course we would say "I could never imagine having the courage to do something like this". But go back in time to 1939, and I think somehow, you would find the courage. I heard a story that the beach the Canadians landed on wasnt even protected and they literally sat on the beach and had a cup of tea waiting for orders! lol, i guess the Americans weren't so lucky about what beach they took! hahaha
Every beach on d-day was protected. The Canadians faced SS comando squads, the British faced Panzer and Tiger tank divisions, and the Americans faced heavy gun fortifications. Every allied country had their part to play on that day, and they all carried it out with presision, and force. Know one country did more or less than another. And every one of those nations has and equal share of the victory on that day, and inded the entire war.
This is my problem with kids playing call of duty. It makes them want to join the armed forces because they think its cool. It by all means is not "cool".
i hate it when people remember ONLY the omaha beach landing. there were 2 brit landings, completely ignored, a canadian landing, which atleast canada cares about. there was even another american landing, which no one remembers. There are so many heroes in ww2 that no one remembers. GOD PEOPlE! SHOW SOME RESPECT!

@MichaelMyers87 Heavy defended? These beaches were not heavyl defended. Stronger protected areas were the ports and the region around Calais (the region werethe germans expected the allies to attack). Nevertheless all soldiers (the germans too) suffer great loses and should be remembered.

So I'm a us marine....get this during my crucible( last right of passage to becoming a marine) we were doing a combat assault through barbed wire, mud, sand, water the works. Miserable right lol but the speakers in the trees played this whole beach scene with out voices haha I'd seen the movie so many times I recognized it right away! It's mad realistic and made that whole 300 yards of crawling on my face and guts that more realistic. And I could here Tom hanks saying move..move! Lol that was a

I find it interesting how, no matter how visceral, real, and just plain sad war movies can be, they are all just glorifications of war.A person could spend their entire life making a war movie that they think truly outlines the vast horror of war, when really it would just be another glorification of the merciless thing war is. It's apalling. But it's all too human.

I think that is the closest any film maker got to the reality of that day. While I stand in awe that those brave men faced hell on that beach I feel gratitude for their sacrifice and prey forgiveness for feeling grateful it was them and not me.
Had that attack failed history might have taken a terrible turn as this happened just thirteen months before nuclear weapons became a reality.

It was amazing anybody survived. I've been to Omaha beach and seen the distance that allied soldiers had to cross to achieve the objective. It was a pure turkey shoot for a German machine gunner. What a horrible way to die.

@rmh941 I Know but its like living a lie. My grandfather uncle and father are german. All three have served in the United states military. German soldiers were not allowed to disobey orders. They would be qaurt martialed or face summary execution. I believe in the US desertion is still a capital offense but only carried out 2-3x in our history.

I just looked it up. Turns out it was a mistake on the part of the US commander orchestrating this landing. He got chastised for the neglect later since it should've been a give-away. They routinely used smokescreens to drop paratroopers without enemies opening up on them the moment they hit the ground in the Pacific.
Of course the Germans knew there would be allied soldiers there, but hitting a mark at that distance is hard enough without being unable to see half the beach.

Im not disagreeing that the smoke isnt effective or that it wasnt used. Im saying that on D-Day it was pretty much impossible to use effective smoke screen, like I said, the allied bombings of German defenses on June 5 didnt hit most of the intended targets, we were storming a beach we though had been extensively hit, another reason why smoke wasnt used.

Every beach on d-day was protected. The Canadians faced SS comando squads, the British faced Panzer and Tiger tank divisions, and the Americans faced heavy gun fortifications. Every allied country had their part to play on that day, and they all carried it out with presision, and force. Know one country did more or less than another. And every one of those nations has and equal share of the victory on that day, and inded the entire war.

i hate it when people remember ONLY the omaha beach landing. there were 2 brit landings, completely ignored, a canadian landing, which atleast canada cares about. there was even another american landing, which no one remembers. There are so many heroes in ww2 that no one remembers. GOD PEOPlE! SHOW SOME RESPECT!

@MichaelMyers87 Heavy defended? These beaches were not heavyl defended. Stronger protected areas were the ports and the region around Calais (the region werethe germans expected the allies to attack). Nevertheless all soldiers (the germans too) suffer great loses and should be remembered.

So I'm a us marine....get this during my crucible( last right of passage to becoming a marine) we were doing a combat assault through barbed wire, mud, sand, water the works. Miserable right lol but the speakers in the trees played this whole beach scene with out voices haha I'd seen the movie so many times I recognized it right away! It's mad realistic and made that whole 300 yards of crawling on my face and guts that more realistic. And I could here Tom hanks saying move..move! Lol that was a

I find it interesting how, no matter how visceral, real, and just plain sad war movies can be, they are all just glorifications of war.A person could spend their entire life making a war movie that they think truly outlines the vast horror of war, when really it would just be another glorification of the merciless thing war is. It's apalling. But it's all too human.

I think that is the closest any film maker got to the reality of that day. While I stand in awe that those brave men faced hell on that beach I feel gratitude for their sacrifice and prey forgiveness for feeling grateful it was them and not me.
Had that attack failed history might have taken a terrible turn as this happened just thirteen months before nuclear weapons became a reality.

It was amazing anybody survived. I've been to Omaha beach and seen the distance that allied soldiers had to cross to achieve the objective. It was a pure turkey shoot for a German machine gunner. What a horrible way to die.

The Allies were too dumb to hit their targets the day they bombed Normandy - just before their planned invasion. That is why there were heavy casualties.
