It's a cliché but it when people play as good as this it is not a question of who is best. Two different styles Cream - Free. NSU live is for me the best guitar solo ever but who the fuck should care what I think -not me that's for sure!
SO MUCH AGREE WITH ALL POSTED COMENTS SEEN FREE FROM THE START KNEW THEN THEY WOULD BE HUGE. SUCH A CLEVER BAND . LISTEN TO ANDYS BASS PLAYING FILLING IN FOR KOSS WITH CHORDS ON BASS TRULLY AMAZING NOT YET, BUT ONE DAY WILL BE RECOGNIZISED FOR THE TRULLY TALENTED GUYS THEY WERE. GOD BLESS THEM.
kossoff is god even eric clapton asked him how he did his vibrato because kossoff was unique compared to all the over rock guitarists in his time just a shame about the drugs i heard he got so wasted he couldnt remember the riff to all right now thats not good i think if hed have survived his addiction he may have ended up like peter green never coming back to how he was RIPKOSS
Why do you people keep comparing guitarists etc. they are all brilliant in their own rights. It's a matter of personal taste not who's better than who.
ok, agree to disagree and all that. Theyre all very good and appeal to many different "taste" and "feels". That being said, for a bass/drum combo, nobody is as good as Bogert/Appice. And much as i like Kossoff, Rory Gallagher is far above the Kossoff/Young duo by himself...just to keep it interesting
Paul Kossof, superb musician, he had more soul in his fingers, than any other guitarist, Why the edge gets praise is beyond me, he's not worthy of putting Kossofs broken strings in the bin.
@krakatoa1200 Yay to that - I have seen Free live three times and I have heard this unique, amazing and nerve tingling playing with my own ears and no-one will ever come close to how Koss played his Les Paul.... yes, Clapton was in awe of his playing, so much soul in one so young.....
You know what? I agree with you and I think that's part of their magic. After all, we're talking Power Trio, and those two guys create a majestic chaos that epitomizes the wild jam...(In my opinion)
Some beautiful commets on here ... Koss died a week or so before I was due to see see him in Liverpool with Crawler ... Mr Big and Be My Friend from what appears to be the same tour (The Envelope Album, which I still have a copy of) are two of the finest bits of soul blues solo guitar I heard - and a side nod to Rory there
From a singer's perspective - Rodgers ... you lucky cunt to have vox like that!! Grrrr!!! & Thanks a lot for sharing:-)
Free was a great band, we all know it, but Cream was different. Creams strength was the power of its rhythm section. Listen to live Spoonful, or some of their older stuff (live Sleepy Time Time, etc). and thats not tasteful? Come on! Jack Bruce was a wildly tasteful animal, Ginger was perhaps not as tasteful, but an animal none-the-less. Eric had to constantly blow his entire load just to keep up. And that was their magic.
@nachodaddy Uh . . . . .. good one, but no. Bruce and Baker together (and apart) were better sleeping than Fraser and Kirke at their best. And Fraser and Kirke are REALLY good. I completely agree with you otherwise. This is a great version.
@proferic I have to agree. Bruce and Baker where better technical players but they also had a good feel for eachother. They were the best when they were on fire.
pretty sure uncle jack would admit he cant even come close to rogers on vocal (not many would even think they could), but yes, creams rythm secton could prob improvise more than fraser and kirke, but to listen to this you can hear how better free was at playing together with leaving room for each other, even with kossof and rogers taking the main stage here. frasers mr.big solo, unforgetable allright now bass line.come on man, jacks bass is dusty past 12th frett. and they were young kids then
@moonlightsea8 you know the funniest thing? i don't think baker and bruce play together very well. they both have their own 'thing' going on, but they don't intertwine well, to me.
@moonlightsea8 Clapton actually handled the vocals on this one (although I agree with your comment as Jack was arguably the better vocalist at the time)
the NME wrote a full page comment after kssoffs death
it was the most amazing tribute to a rock guitarist i've ever read. he was king of this style of brit blues & paul rodgers is the best. saw him last year brilliant
Free and Cream are both among my fav bands, but this Free version just blows Cream out of the water. Amazing talent. Grossly underappreciated, tragically underrated.
@moonlightsea8 No friend this FREE Paul Rodgers,Vocals , Keyboards & sometimes guitar, Paul Kossoff , Lead & rytham, Andy Fraser, Bass, Simon Kirke , drums. Paul Rodgers is playing right now, with Bad Co, as well as the Paul Rodgers band, Go & see them I promise you will not be disappointed. excuse spelling. Peace.
Anybody else have the problem of who to listen to during the solos? That bass line is hard to get away from but the guitar wants to grab you and not let go! I think this is the best raw unbridled FREE I've ever heard!
@Butt3rZisGOD I was just thinking that. I wasn't expecting much from that album because I don't like their new stuff, but I love that album! I wish Rush would go back to playing music like their 70s stuff. That album proved that they can at least still do it.
@wobbly585 If you're talking about Rush, they have a lot of new stuff. They haven't stopped making new music since they started in '74. And it's SLPplexi, like the guitar amp made by Marshall.
@slpplexi1969 Hullo Mr @sipplexi. Thanx for the tip I really used to like them so I shall make a promise to myself to search em out. Another under-rated Canadian band were Guess Who? Best wishes to you and yours. Take care mate. Peace
@121126 Free is one of THE most underated bands in history. They really jam on this one, adding a funk kind of feel with the slower tempo. Did they cut this track in the studio as well? I forget. Vocals KICK ass. I have a friend who says if you're gonna cover songs, you gotta OWN the tune as if you wrote it. Case in point.... :)
Someone played me this at college 20 yrs ago and I have been looking for it since. Thanks Andy the parachuter who introduced me. Pure air guitar bliss.
Put this on and Sir Henry at Rawlinson end and you have a great night of 70's culture, often overlooked because of the bad fashions.
The Best feel & vibrato player EVER. Im FUCKED by why not enough people know this man. Pitty he died so young. What he would have achieved on the guitar is only for all to imagine. Love him
My favourite version of the song, too. Haven't listened to this version in ages since my dad came home drunk, borrowed my 'Songs Of Yesterday' box set, and accidentally damaged disc 4 (the live cd on that box set) to the extent where certain songs now won't play! ARGGGGHHHH! Anyway, yeah, explosive, tight version from a truly great band in its collective prime. Great stuff!
cool!! i just found this same copy on my pc, i have no idea where i got it but i'm glad i have it cos this song is so cool. koss is my fave guitarist n he totally rips into this. 5 stars
