A great Mozartian performance, IMHO. Balances vocal beauty, lyricism, and elegance -- resulting in an expressive, yet prudent rendition of a done-to-death aria.
But what a voice! What a vocal control, yet expressiveness! Gösta Windbergh certainly was Mozartian par excellence, singing with rare sensitivity music that requires that above all.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I love this rendition even more than Wunderlich's! He has such a sense for the dramatic and uses his diction to further the communication of the emotions his character is experiencing. Bravo Maestro! Thanks for posting this!
As a tenor who also sings Tamino, it is nice to know that even a rendition as great as this one receives shy applause from the audience... Tamino is such an ungrateful role! RIP Gösta, you rock!
@turbofreddy This has with the Swiss audience to do, they weren't shouting, or - Thank God - ever interrupting an aria with applause. After the performance though, they could give their approval. I love the Swiss people they are the nicest ones imaginable, and they are very musical, I saw a lot of opera in Switzerland in the 80's but I remember I was a bit surprised myself at what you desribebes here. Also Mozart in never applauded as Verdi or Puccini.
This is the best rendition of this aria I have heard since Wunderlich! Why is this man not a superstar? Did he not have the P.R. machinery behind him? He is also a true tenor with a beautiful voice; as much as I admire Jonas Kaufmann, Kaufmann's voice is dark in timbre and Winbergh has a naturally sweet and true tenor. Oohhh, horrible pitch wavers in the recording throughout, espesically at 1'00 and 3"12"; can these be corrected?
Well...to be a superstar not always leads to high quality... and not being one do not leads to poor quality. The Mozart roles (and others) of this man where just great... rich and secure voice. Great!!
De belles choses dans la voix,et d'autres un peu moins.

According to the archives of the opera house, this is from the 1978/79 season in Geneva - a couple years before he left Stockholm for Zurich.

2002-1942= 59. I wish he had lived a 1000 years, but his case was not of a tragic death at 36, Wunderlich's was.
