For example if an airliner is in a dive straight down it will tear itself apart before it ever hits the ground. This is due to flutter. At low level the air is more dense (you actually got one right), and an airliner will encounter flutter at approx 350 knots at 1000" AGL at which point it will begin to shake itself apart.

So, the plane CAN exceed even 700 mph when diving. When the plane then levels off, it still has that speed. It then eventually slows.
Just like ur car. Say the fastest it goes is 80 on a flat road. But if you scream down a 60 deg hill, you can get up to 140.
Now, when the hill ends, and the road levels off, they car doesnt istantly return to 80. it will slow gradually.
So, the planes were level in the last 20-30 secs. But they still were diving down for the previous 7-8 minutes
