Paddy's 1988 interview on here explains the concept behind Cars and Girls and King of Rock N Roll. Clears things up a bit.. the songs were actually goofy on purpose.
sirlordwhitman-we are on the wrong song here. The King of Rock and Roll (nt about Elvis) But about a singer who has one hit (eg. Ricky Martin) and goes around england just singing this song over and over around seaside towns specifically. Paddy Macloon is a very kind person (see interviews with him). This is him being very critical. It a bit like being savaged by a sheep. The hot dog and jumping frog are the repetiveness of this one hit. It is meant to be jokey. and goofy.
Don't mean to be hard on them.. but I do like 'Appetite' Even though that song doesn't make one lick of sense either, but it's cool. And Paddy looked better with that Motorhead moustache. And of course, Wendy is always nice to look at.
Are people deaf how does this sound like a mutation of spandau ballet (who by the way are also a good band)? But Paddy's lyrics are way more brilliant than spandau -actually are a way cleverer than most bands he is very exceptionally talented guy. The tune is still brilliant.
@hoodsxl The lyrics are BRILLIANT? Explain 'HOT DOG... jumping FROG ...Albuquerque' and 'fine cut a fine figure fine cut a fine oh yeah' What is a sausage on a bun, an amphibian, and a city in New Mexico all doing in the same song? And what's the figure cutting? I mean it sounded fun when I was a kid, but aren't lyrics supposed to make more sense as you grow up? Maybe that's why they were bigger in Europe, because people didn't understand enough English to realize how goofy it sounded.
@Supersweetguy Hmmm.. That cute, whispery thing that he does? The nonsensical lyrics? How do cars and girls hurt in the first place? The melody is catchy.. I'll give it that.. but after all these years, listening to this is like playing with old toys. Good nostalgia, but certainly not putting it up there with the Beatles as some other commenter on here compared them to.
ok who can hate this song or video? I love it! i graduated high school in 1987 so the song is old as me but still has class and far as I am concerned can hold it's own today on the radio!
Hum !!! why can't we compare prefab sprout with the Beatles ? Paddy Mac Allon is not the king of rock'n'roll really but the king of pop definitely and let's change the world with music keeps his star shining brighter tan ever in the firmament.
This being said the video really sucks. But nobody's perfect.
Who cares about Springsteen anyway... This is just a brilliant song from one of the best albums of all time ! - Can't believe it was 21 years ago - OMG !
Also -When Love breaks Down from the Old Grey Whistle Test 1985 is already loaded. Watch & Enjoy !
...because Springsteen is a one-hit wonder, with a geriatric posse of millionaires and pretend musicians; squeezing the false blood of 'being American' from a doting following of Coors-drinking fools. He can't even sing, as proven by his last, pathetic SuperBowl fiasco.
After reviewing P.S.'s chart success in the US, with one album that peaked at 180, and no singles even charting, I'd say, as far as the US goes, they were a no-hit wonder.
Happier?
Anyway, selling albums isn't necessarily about "hits". Led Zep rarely released singles at all and sold millions of albums too. Hits don't necessarily make a band what it is. A lot of bands sell a lot of albums and don't worry a lick about hits.
I do love this song. However not sure why they are having a go at Springsteen. Does Springsteen preoccupied with "cars and girls"? Dont think so. Possibly lyrics not understood.
The Prefab's were an rare and wonderful oasis of great songs in a decade that I nearly slept through (literally) as music generally was so shite in the 1980's (shudder)! I hear they have a new album out in September...?
What a song! This Band oozed with Talent....its sad that today there are no Prefab Sprouts....only boy queer bands that rip off other artists songs and pluck their queer eyebrows.
You need go back to the 1980s before the little queers were even born if you want to hear real talent.
Brilliant i was looking for deacon blue on amazon and these came up to sayin other people buy this to,so i took a chance and only really know them for king of rock and roll and love breaks down but the best of album is pure class and the song writing is the best.Oh and i aint played my deacon blue yet
I playd the dickens out of anything I could from Prefab Sprout back in the late 80's early 90's when I was a DJ for 89.9 WERG. Great band, great tunes!
Paddy McAloons lyrical prowess put him right out of a paycheck. This guy was too smart for the mainstream of the 80's era. This guy was a pop music genius of which only early works from the Beatles, could be considered comparable (IMHO). I cannot help but see the comparable depth of insight with tracks like 'Uncle Albert' and 'Eleanor Rigby' That stuff, changed pop music, forever.
God Bless,Paddy Mcalloon for the eternal truths his lyrics spoke.
There's a nice little lick of mini crash cymbal from the drums on the lead through the first verse and chorus refrain.
'ucl richard' The bass player looks like steve cram??? wtf! Tom Petty looks like Peddy McAloon (the vox and guitar) and Wendy Smith looks like a princess (backing vox)- so what! The song sounds like it belongs to number 1 both sides of the alantic for 18 weeks.
