I know some baby animals look adorable too many ppl, but c'mon. Rats?? I remember during the summer, one in my house tried to bite me in my kitchen. Unlike mice which are pussy and would run to any sound, this huge fella started showing its teeth and looked like it was being aggressive in some way. My dad called the exterminator, but how could these creatures be attractive??

how long did it take your rats to become that tame. i have 2 males, the same size as yours and they are still nervous. i mean i only got them yesterday. i have managed to pick up the darker one and he has been sitting on my shoulder, but when i try to stroke or pick up the pale one he just cowers in a corner.

@wolverine1865 Depends on their age. The younger the better but just give them time to get used to you. :] if they are used to your hand in the cage they should be just fine. Rats are REALLY good pets and are extremely attached to their owner and really affectionate once they are accustomed to the person. :D Good luck with your rattiess<3 :]

@looterwolf do not over feed the rat, let him or her out daily, make sure they have plenty of water, and give it lots of attention and try practicing its name and making a noise after it so it recognizes that noise. i say my rats name and then make a nosie with my tongue and he comes right away

try to get 2 or more, the wire cages are better then glass. try to get carefresh bedding, pine/cedar(etc) can cause health risk's. oh yeah, when you buy some, check their gender(if you get more then one). when buying rats(or any animal) check for discharge around the eyes/nose. check for wet tail(the squirts). try to get younger ones, because they will become more trusting faster(not in all cases). older ones are usually more laid back.

Lovely babies, but you shouldnt use wood shavings, they cause myco.

Pretty much all rats, with the exception of some lab rats, are infected with myco from the day they're born.

Wood shavings can aggravate it though, although they're not bad, so long as it isn't pine or cedar.

I know all rats have it from the say they are born, but wood shavings bring it out and aggrivate it, and, all wood shavings are bad. Pine and cedar are the most commonly used ones, rarely do i see aspen.

Pretty much every place I know of that sells rodents sells aspen shavings. They're not that bad really, though there is better stuff. The best is probably "Yesterdays News" cat litter. Maximum odor control and quite long lasting.

Here in the states they come in big bales, clearly marked with what species of tree it's made of.

Aspen will also have much less of a smell because it's a hardwood. Pine and cedar are softwoods, and it's the aromatic oils in them which irritate rats respiratory systems.

I am pretty sure you can order it online though. Next best thing though, would be those shredded paper types.

There is something called breeders choice over here, it is recycled paper pellets, that might be the australian equivelant to yesterdays news. And we can get carefresh here too, but its $15 for the smallest packet!

I have 2 rats and they started off sisters but then we realized that my little brothers rat, Brownie had testicles.... so I realized its a boy! Then we tried to make sure no 'funny business' happened between Tina and Brownie but yesterday I came home and there are 9 little bald blind babies in the cage! So now I have baby rats! Although they are quite small since at this point they are only about 12 hours old. But we dont exactly know how old they are because we werent there when she gave birth!

To bunsoy16: Don't leave your new rattie alone--spend lots of time with him (or her?) so he gets to know you and feels comfortable with you.

Pet rats sometimes "nibble", but it is not biting, but just sort of rubbing you with their teeth. It does not hurt at all--and it's a compliment. ;) If you don't like it, squeak when they do it, and they'll be gentler.

My rats used to try to chew on my fingernails and watch sometimes, I just squeaked whenever they did that and now they've stopped.
