  • GREAT - I was apprenticed at the factory that made those machines (later models had electronic patterning). Gorgeous.

  • @999manxman Thats really cool. =) They're pretty amazing machines.

  • I just got a great stocking hat pattern from knittingpatternoftheday (.) com and Grandma Nutt is adorable!

  • Great video! I would love to see that in person, would love to see how they have the machine programed and everything. Very cool!

  • @BigTerKC Yeah, they're very cool machines. ^^

  • Smashing video, such a shame places like Patons (Alloa) Donbros etc are all gone now never to be replaced with quality knitwear.Facinating to watch especially to a knitter.

  • Yeah, the future is coming unfortunately.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. =)

  • Excellent quality & strangely hypnotic. When I was a nipper & colour TV was introduced in the UK (yikes 1968!!), they would have "public information" films very similar (though not of the same quality!) to this running in full colour in the afternoons. You are good - very good!

  • Sounds like I might have had a job 40 years ago. =P

    =D Cheers!

  • This is the end of that old romantism knitting, with needles, Leuke! ... : ) Here, in Brazil, we have a sentence that say: "Prepare the needles that I am going with the Threads" when you want to say that you are going to visit some friend to a long long (stay) conversation (Chat). : )

  • Hand knitted things will always have they're place I think, but there just aren't enough people out there to knit everything we need. =)

  • where the children? Dont little Chinese children er change that

to young as in under 10 make the best stuff !....and cheaply I might add !

  • =) Cheers.

  • What would you call this? Video poetry? A contemplation on the mechanical age? Whatever it is, I liked it.

  • Either of those sound good. =) Thanks!

  • That was strangely intriguing to watch

    Nice vid :D

    -DeLaNe

  • Glad you liked it mate. =]

  • sweet! haha i love these videos...this one was kinda peaceful. really cool though! do they deliver the socks around the world, by any chance...? i want some hehe

  • Yeah, I was there for quite awhile filming and there's something very peaceful about the rhythm of them. =]

  • Very well done Leuke.

Is this a regular sock making factory?

Did you say the macines were restored

or have they been in use down through the years? Fascinating to watch!

  • Yeah, they just have two of these machines that plug away all day.

I assume they've been restored, as they're pretty old. But knowing how things were made back in the day they could still be running like new. =D

  • bollocks imo

  • it's quite fascinating imo

  • Glad you thought so.

  • WOW that machine was amazing to watch & listen to!

  • I thought so. =]

  • Thats great stuff Leuke, looks really cool seeing how the socks are made from the knitting machines.

  • Yeah, after doing this I'd like to go and see what the modern machines look like.

  • like the inside of a brain, only less nerves and more metal... and more socks. all working in synch. interesting :D

  • xD hahaha, genius!

  • Those bloody Mongrel Sock are back again! he shouts. But are they washed? she replies.

  • =P haha, yes.

  • Great video Leuke! Very interesting to see the machinery in action... Great photography! I agree with much of the comments below. 5 stars!

  • =) Cheers!

  • Excellent cinematography! I love old industrial machines of this sort. This sort of mechanical design is almost a lost art. With electronics the small mechanical control mechanisms are easily replaced with stock parts. The men who designed these machines have likely been dead for many decades, but fruit of their efforts is still useful.

  • Yeah, I thought it was really nice that they have been restored for use. =) It gives the socks a nice feel.

  • Looks very cool =p. I enjoyed these Mongrel Socks videos

  • =) I'm glad.

  • interesting thanks

  • Glad you thought so Pauly. =)

  • nice video but weird song to go with that...

  • Yeah it was hard trying to find something to fit, but I thought that went alright.

  • Well, I muted this video and randomed a song from my itunes it actually goes not bad lol~ The song turned out to be Brandy - Right Here (Departed)

  • Copyright problems there though. Unfortunately I need creative commons licensed music for youtube. Otherwise I'd have billions more songs to chose from. =D

  • Ah I see now... that's quite hard for you I could tell. Good job :)

  • Good old fashioned English engineering.

  • That's it!

  • fancy :)

  • lol are you geting payed for makeing comercials for mongrel socks on youtube lol

  • =P haha, nah. I made these for them and they very kindly said I could put them here on youtube, just so I could show everyone some different stuff. A lot of the things I do outside of youtube I can never put up here because of rights to things and what not.

  • This is like something i would have watched on sesame St. when i was little. It made me feel like a kid. Very cozy :)

  • Aww, how nice! ^^

  • HOORAY FOR SOCKS!!!

  • Indeed!

  • I miss the days when old ladies in rocking chairs made the socks.

Although a video of an old lady knitting in a rocking chair isn't quite as appealing and interesting as this. :)

  • Tis true.

These machines are pretty old though. =P I imagine the ones that make most peoples socks aren't nearly as cool.

  • Very good Lueke! It was very mesmerizing to watch all the intricate parts. The camera work was suburb! The subject matter reminded me of my grandmother and great aunt who worked most of their lives in a sock mill in the deep south [Ft Payne, Alabama, US]. The city used to be known as the 'sock capital of the world' as there was so many sock mills. Now it's kinda only known for the country musical group Alabama.

Anywho .. great job & keep up the good work!! =-]

  • wow, that's kinda cool. ^^

    Cheers

  • AMAZING !

  • Isn't it? =D hehe

  • It IS rather fascinating to see them get made.

  • I thought so. =)
