Howard is good here. I love the rubatos and the sound he generates (although the sound might actually be some unintentional effect from recording technology).
actually the grandes etudes are technically more challenging than their later counterparts (the transcendental etudes). what distinguishes this particular piece is a full development of the theme that for some reason does not appear in the later transcentendal version. he just transcended it i guess.
I know the most of GEs are technically more challenging than TEs. With that in mind, I was asking if this "particular" piece is harder than its Transcendental version. I didn't really know about the agitated middle section when I asked that question. By the way, the TE of Mazeppa is harder than it's GE version, as you know.
