I was the art director for this spot and I bet no one knows that Lee actually shot the bottles! Special effects couldn't get a squib to work on a traveling bottle so what they did was to open the blank cartridges and put six grains of sand in each bullet. When Marsh, the bartender was ducking, he was really ducking! They had to slow him down so they could see his draw on camera.
@fonzi0was0cool Lee van Cleef is a real man, he doesn't need to play at ultra-macho like those gym-muonkeys who live in fear that they might be gay, same with Lee Marvin, who was straight but supported gay rights.
Anyway, Lee van Cleef wasn't weirdly gay, just cool.
YOUR PROBABLY RIGHT. I GUESS IN THOSE DAYS THE THOUGHT OF SOMEONE BEING GAY NEVER EVEN OCCURED TO ANYONE. SO PEOPLE WERE NOT TOO BOTHERED ABOUT HOW THEY LOOKED. EVEN THE MEN WITH GIRLY LOOKS WERE STRAIGHT !!
These young actors who think they're bad assed today could learn from men like this legend and Jack Palance! When they passed on along with many of the other legends..The age of western went with them..It would be miraculous if they can bring back the same caliber of westerns these men stared in,. HOLLYWOOD has lost its way! They need to regroup and find out what people really want to see instead of the bullshit thats on today!
Well said. I haven't seen a good Western Movie since the days of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, (Eli Wallach-still alive at 94), Lee Van Cleef, Glenn Ford and even older western movie stars. There's just too many to list. Thank God for the technology that allows us to watch reruns.
@Paladin1441 Impossible man , the only way the good old westerns will come back to life is if the legendary actors of the '60-'70s will come back to life , Oh and lets not forget Sergio Leone who defined the western and gave it its true shape and charm .
I was the DP on this commercial. We shot it in Fiddletown Ca. in an original old west era bar. Getting a chance to meet Lee van Cleef is something I will never forget. Lee had cancer and died I believe about two weeks after we shot this. He was wonderful to everyone there that day. He was so fast on the draw that we had to slow him down. From the holster to the muzzle blast was only about 1 frame of film. He was using special loads like small buckshot to smash the bottles.
I had heard that he died technically of a heart attack but I remember seeing him interviewed in the 80's about the fact that most of the cast of "The Conqueror" had died of cancer and that so far he'd dodged the bullet.
We have that fuck Howard Hughes to thank for that little gem!
What do you think?
Van Cleef is my hands down western hero.
My lady friend knew the family in NY. She knew his sisters and noted that they all had a strong facial similiarity
Sand irradiated from the atomic testings was imported for some scenes and it is believed this is what caused so many on that film, including John Wayne and Susan Hayward to die of cancer. Nosher Powell, a stunt man on that film, once said he and Lee Van Cleef were the only 2 on that film not to contract cancer, mostly because they had not had any contact with this sand.
@dawnpatrol6 thank you for sharing with me your great experience, one the ordinary people don't have. You really got your quality meeting, when standing close to LEE.
@dawnpatrol6 Awsome commercial! I wasn't aware he had cancer. The actual cause of death is listed as a heart attack on wikipedia and imdb. Anyways, thanks for the commercial and sharing the story behind it!
As I understand it, this is the last thing Lee did. Just after this he suffered a heart attack and died at 64 on 12/16/89. It's strange that after 86 films starting with High Noon in 1952 and over 150 television jobs starting with Range Rider in 1951 and working on Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Have Gun, Rifleman etc that this commerical would be his last job. But right to the end he had that great face and still could make with the gunplay.
Big Gundown was awesome. The one i did not like was God's Gun, just never stuck with me. Still, LVC is the shit. After all, Ocelot was modeled after him.
Damn well I thought the Midas commercial was awesome but THIS is the best commercial ever made, and it is also better than 98% of movies made nowadays, and its shorter.
