  • Truman Capote was a genius.

groucho here was an old man trying to stay relevant.

    he fails.

  • Groucho ruins this interview. What a boring selfish old fart.

  • Look at Capote's face at 7:27 looking at Groucho. The man is angry with him :0

  • This conversation is all over the place.

  • I love Groucho but he talks too much

  • Groucho is such an asshole

  • cavett's joke about truman 'dominating' the conversation was pitch-perfect

  • its a strange interview , flicking to truman then groucho ..its bit all over the place.

  • This is so uncomfortable to watch, but funny all the same.

  • @keefriff99 .... This show was always uncomfortable to watch, yet very good. It is mainly due to Dick Cavett's sensitive persona. Truman was very patient with Groucho's child-like need for attention.

  • capote flicks him off 5:18

  • sounds like Groucho has lost the plot

  • My God truman fingers his eye with his middle finger while replying back to groucho

  • Looks like Groucho just enjoys attention and he isnt getting it with truman on stage, so groucho is trying for attention: laughs.

  • Is it just me, or is Groucho... a bit grouchy?

  • how crotchety, petulant, selfish and just plain unfunny is Groucho Marx in this clip?

  • Groucho interrupts way too much with comments that aren't funny. Makes me want to say Shut up Groucho.

  • @rmutt4 , I think that's how she was in real life, not funny at all.

  • Capote wanted to shove that cigar up Groucho's behind! And, I don't blame him. Notice how Capote touches his face all of the time.

  • Look how classy talk shows were those days

  • How cute was Truman!

  • Groucho was the king of cheap laughs.

  • Thank you for uploading this, it's quite interesting! I don't care much about Capote's personal life, but he was an amazing writer for sure.

  • BOTH Toby Jones and Phillip Seymour were spot on, in different way. If you haven't seen 'Infamous' - the OTHER Truman Capote film - it's worth seeing.

  • is everyone forgetting Groucho is in his 80's here? With his lifestyle and the amount of work he did, the fact he was alive at the time is impressive, let alone conduct and interview. He was only 6 months away from suffering several strokes, and on top of all this, Capote (loved Breakfast at Tiffany's btw) is only in his mid 40's. Give the guy a break.

  • Wow, Groucho wasn't even funny

  • That old man needs to shut the hell up and let Mr. Capote do his interview. Damn old man. We're watching for Truman!

  • @cbass573 "That old man"?! Are you out of your mind? You've got to be speaking facetiously.

  • 5:18 Looks like Truman isn't taking kindly to Groucho

  • after he spoke the first sentence i immediately had to pulse it and write this :

Mr. Hoffman, you are a GOD....

  • Way to talk ALL the way through Capote's interview, Groucho!!

  • Groucho acts like an stubborn old man trying to take over the conversation

  • What I would give to put on a show like this in modern times: No cheesy band, no fancy desk, no promotions, just a host and his guests talking like normal people.

  • @peeeesh well, he had a band (how cheesy or uncheesy it was, or current talk show bands are for that matter, is a personal judgement call), he had a desk when the show first came on, and things were promoted all the time.

  • @unfortunatebeam

I stand corrected. It's still better than other talk shows though.

  • According to the many bios of Groucho by this point in his life he felt like he was a hasbeen and was very lonely. He didn't have many close friends to talk to, and since he liked Dick Cavett he enjoyed being on the show just to talk and not have to feel that he was "on" all the time. So, when he dominates the show it's not malicious nor is it because he was an attention whore, it was that he was lonely and wanted to be involved and feel needed.

  • Groucho needs to clear his throat

  • I like Groucho's hat

  • Don't blame Groucho--he just gets bored...as would I. Watch Jack Kerouac on william f. Buckley and you'll see what I mean.

  • It's funny how intoxicated they are

  • Groucho is so out of touch and out-dated, his humour is old and tired like him and he's clearly intimidated by Capote's wit, charm and intellect, it's almost embarrassing to watch, Truman Capote was so fresh and sharp and really charismatic and cool...but Groucho was way past his shelf-life and seemed like a bitter, envious dinosaur struggling to keep up but failing dismally.

  • @sleepypoodle I disagree.

  • @sleepypoodle Groucho is intimidated by no one--ask anyone today--or show them a picture--of both men and see which one is remebered more. Capote wasn't a great writer. The Marx Bros. were great!

  • @dedbusted And may I ask why do you think Capote was not a great writer?

  • @sleepypoodle Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but it's also important that the opinion take into account what is true and eliminate that which is false. Groucho was not then and is not now out-dated, nor was/is his humor tired and old. Next to Charlie Chaplin he is considered the greatest comedian who ever lived, with enormous talent. According to his bio he was neither bitter nor envious of Capote, he was merely lonely and enjoyed Cavett's show. Groucho should be respected and honored.

  • It's weird how Mike Tyson sounding he is.

  • wow i thought truman was taller then this.

  • Is Groucho senile?

  • "do you feel that truman is dominating the conversation?" hahahahahaha I love Groucho, but the truth is that he is being a little annoying here (and I love Truman very much as well) great video, thanks!

  • @ClaudiofelesChinaski and groucho doesnt give a hoot. i think hes sending up truman because he doesnt like him

  • Groucho is trying to be too weird. It's annoying.

  • Who's the tall, good-looking guy?

  • @skeetereze Truman Capote of course!

  • I agree 100% with Truman's comments on teaching writing.

  • that was so awkward, Groucho was so rude and demanding, while the interviewer seemed unable to keep control, thanks Capote knew how to step back to ptevent any more awkwardness and save Groucho`s feelings.

  • 3:18 BOOM MIKE

  • @GELLYBELLYILY123 3:06 TWO BOOM MIKES!

  • truman gave groucho the finger

  • @TheThom01 He wishes he did!

  • @TheThom01 that's the only part of this interview that made me laugh!

  • @wbrosen Honestly? To make a statement like that, you really don't know about Capote. Have you even read In Cold Blood? Or The Grass Harp? Or Breakfast at Tiffany's? I urge you to look into those books...besides, this interview was during the part of his life that I consider to be a footnote.

    Funny video, though.

  • Damn. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was spot on!

  • @AlcinoustheXIIth jesus H christ... you aint kidding

  • @AlcinoustheXIIth Tell me about it! I'd only seen Truman from the Dean Martin Roasts. I was floored of how Hoffman was dead on!

  • @AlcinoustheXIIth it's amazing.

  • @dragonfly8486 yes, he dos :D

  • Groucho obviously needed a lot of attention. I commend Capote for being so cool. You had your time Groucho. Shut the F up.

  • Groucho is SO annoying!

  • Groucho was painful to watch here

  • Groucho had his moments in this interview, but he spent most of the time rambling on about random things. The audience seems to agree at 7:52

  • OMG!!! Groucho! too damn funny... I would swear I'm listening and looking at my Grandfather...

  • I'm wondering if General Tso (of Chinese Buffet fame) ever said, "Never fight an air war in the west."

  • Groucho Marx was considered by many to be the funniest man that ever lived. Although this wasn't his finest moment on television I'm astounded by these comments I'm reading. Show some respect to one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

  • Truman taught himself how to read at 5 years old...When you are that smart, you can afford to be strange...swag...blessings

  • You gotta love Groucho. I know he seems like he's being sort of hard on Capote, but Capote is just such a strange man, can you blame Groucho for wanting to push his buttons? It looks like he's having fun, and I even sort of think Capote is enjoying it to a slight extent.

  • Capote reminds me of Brando

  • @robg71 the voice definitely..there is a slight resemblence...

  • the overly critical opinions about groucho marx speaks volumes about our ever rule ridden world in which we live, the unwritten laws about when someone can speak and about what and to what extent. the dc show didn't have the oprah feel - people could say what they wanted. and as for personalities, they were real - not the pc, saccharine flavored personas that are expected as seen from your local or national news presenters. people were allowed to be people. not drones. thx for putting this up!

  • @inbetweentics it wasn't your turn...

  • @dragonfly8486

Keith Richard has been 'SENILE" for many years. But,of course,it was caused by so many years of heroin use.

  • WHAT is up with groucho??? man. poor truman. i bet he was so shattered he went backstage and had a coupla stiff scotches in baby food jars.

  • Its true, Groucho does ramble, buit actually he is living proof of Trumans earlier statement thst 'you can't teach creativity, or acting' the same applies with comedy. Groucho is just a funny guy, still capable of a good delivery even at that stage, its a shame that as people get older the slops of their mind spill over a bit as all the earlier bitterness comes out. You get the impression Groucho resents not going to college and needs to prove himself to 'clever' Truman Capote.

  • I agree with mmdaltx. He did that on all his late appearances: WHAT'S MY LINE, and a few other such shows; this one; he just can't keep quiet, and that passes for wit. Rudeness and wit are two different things.

  • Trman had such beautiful eyes!

  • this is legit my favorite thing EVER. :) I love Capote. This makes my day.

  • I saw another clip from this same interview where Groucho and Capote were getting along just fine. Groucho likes to tease, but he seems to really like Capote.

  • i can't understand why people are hating on groucho. he's from a different generation. just appreciate it for what it is...people are too p.c. these days. and, truman capote can hold his own. this is great.

  • Mr. Marx is a total jackass- can't seem to share the stage with Mr. Capote.

  • @cypressdrive1536 oh come on! he's just joking! that's what he did! he's not trying to be mean, he's teasing. And Capote doesn't seem to be bothered by it either. He seems kind of amused, if you ask me. They're just messing with each other.

  • If only my generation of variety talk-shows featured guests and conversations such as these.

  • Effeminate men sicken me, but Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Capote in the film of the same title is epic.

  • Groucho was a pretty great comedian but he really had to have attention didn't he?

  • @ridewave444 isn't that the point of comedy?

  • @ridewave444 According to the many bios of Groucho by this point in his life he felt like he was a hasbeen and was very lonely.

  • @ridewave444 Always found him obnoxious. And he did require exclusive attention.

  • What year was this from?

  • Truman Capote! He's so awesome. Now I understand why Philipp Seymour Hoffman got Best Actor for his portrayal of him. SPOT-ON performance!!

  • Croucho's an idiot

  • was he the voice of droopy dog?

  • Watching this is a confirmation that Philip Seymour Hoffman is an outstanding actor.

  • I clicked on this to see and hear the legendary Truman Capote in a rare televised interview, but instead had to watch some boring washed up comedian with a stupid hat on hog the great man's interview instead.

    What a wasted opportunity.

  • @KenfromDublin : You're a jackass. Groucho is by far more famous and important than Capote.

  • @jojoclown777 Read my comment again you prize idiot and respond without the irrelevance and irreverance next time.

  • @jojoclown777 thank you. i was getting irritated reading some of these

  • I clicked on this to see and hear the legendary Truman Capote in a rare televised interview, but instead had to watch some ovber-rated unfunny washed up comedian with a stupid hat on hog the great man's entire interview, how unfair is that?

  • groucho is exactly the kind of person that pisses me off

  • Capote gives Groucho the finger at 5:19. Cavett is so Groucho's bitch he can't stop him from being a huge bore here. Pity, as Capote probably had a great deal of interest to say.

  • i feel embaressed for the guy in the audience at 7:42.

  • I had no idea Groucho was such a fruitcake.

  • His name is Groucho for a reason

  • @montmorg67 You must not be smoking the good shit, look again dipshit.

  • Damn I was gonna write that xD ZombieMegaman

  • I can't imagine what it'd be like to have Groucho on one side of you and Truman on the other.

  • Do you feel that Truman is dominating the conversation?- He did, because every time Groucho opens his keister, you think, wow he's being such an ass to Truman, and he's really not saying anything worth listening to...Truman says 10 words and still stole the show. Just the nature of presence, and Truman knew that game better.

  • @pollobionico I hear that phrase being used a lot. "Knowing the game".

What does that mean in this context? He's a better conversationalist? Better jokes?

  • "I don't need a hat with three balls. I'm just an average person." Nice! And yes, Truman gives Groucho the finger at 5:18

  • "I don't need a hat with three balls. I'm just an average person." Nice!

  • ah I don't like Groucho in this - he is over-powering - poor Capote!

  • Groucho has to be the center of everything. It's conditioned from all his years being the center of the 'act'. Sad in some ways and a character flaw. But like most dynamic individuals it is those flaws which make them the 'star'.

  • Very subtly, I'm pretty sure Truman flips off Groucho at 5:19.

  • "He talks very softly this man."

    LMFAO

  • capote didnt take crap from people....including the self serving Groucho

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Capote flipping off Groucho at marker 5:19??! I think he's fed up with being interrupted by the old fart.

  • Of course he's wearing a weird hat, he's groucho fucking marx!

  • whoever this clown is, wearing the goofiest hat, need to shut his goddamn mouth. Capote is absolutely brilliant and needed to shut this joker up!

  • Groucho was probably playing off Truman's absurd homosexual liaisons, which he boasted about to a sickening extent with that creaky voice of his. Who would want to listen to Truman for even a ten minute video clip? I would personally rather hear Groucho sneeze or give out a well-earned insult than listen to Truman simpering in his arrogant manner. The only cool thing he ever did was have a character based off him in "To Kill a Mockingbird". I don't think most of these comments do Groucho justice

  • @beautifulmiasma The man was talking about the art of writing and the impossibility of it being taught. And this fucker comes along with his cheap jokes about a rat. Had it been Hemingway or Bukowski, Groucho would of had the shit kicked out of him.

  • @beautifulmiasma Hmm, that's Truman's schtick though. Wouldn't be Truman without it.

  • @beautifulmiasma well you're here listening up big, sweetie.

  • That's a stupidass hat

  • Truman showed a lot of class, while Groucho ...did not.

I had no idea Groucho Marx was such an egomaniacal boor.

It's tragic that Truman succumbed to alcholism and drug abuse. What an incredible talent and human being this man was.

  • Do you feel that Truman is dominating the conversation?

  • The Grass Harp was brilliant.

  • Groucho has never taken anyone seriously, which I applaud him for, and I don't suppose he'd suddenly start with Truman.

  • i didnt realize how small truman was.

  • groucho is gay in this segment

  • that guy in a funny hat is a fuckhead seriously .....not interesting and not funny. Capote is such an interesting human being ....he didnt have to share a show with that guy. who is he ? totally ruins it

  • Groucho comes off as a big ass

  • @mmdaltx Bull

  • @mmdaltx it's the same humor he had on screen, the problem is that in real life it seems harsher.... remember the name groucho was given to him for a reason

  • @mmdaltx Yes you're right. He seems to hate "not" being the centre of attention. The trouble is all his interjections are bad jokes, he dies on almost every one. Truman Capote on the other hand comes off looking very good, a classy guy by this particular appearance.

  • Truman and Groucho on the same panel is a treasure regardless of who dominates the conversation. I thought I'd hear more Truman, though.

  • Comment removed

  • Capote, is my favourite writer! In cold blood is some of the best writing of all time! My car is called 'Truman'!!

  • Someone had uploaded this full interview with Capote but now no more. Throughout of it Groucho (a very great artist) unfortunately makes a fool out of himself with his nasty and sadistic homophobic behaviour towards Capote. Too bad...

  • Was Groucho in a bad mood that day or what? Even sounds somewhat homophobic doesn't he?

  • On this or carson's show Groucho, who was wearing that hat, asked Truman if he would marry him. Truman: no. Groucho: why not? Truman: because you have three balls.

  • Fascinating, supine yet aggressive, and tragic. I loved “In Cold Blood” (book), too…

  • Groucho is annoying

  • Capote slips in giving Groucho the finger at 5:20

  • @kubkins Ha, I saw the finger too! I think it was probably deliberate -- from his body language, I didn't think Truman was too thrilled with Groucho.

  • Capote was a miserable rat himself. Never deserved respect. Never had mine. Justice was served Groucho Style.

  • Capote was just another gay liberal on The New Yorker... No big deal...

  • WOW! what was up with that?

  • Truman Capote was the best

  • Cavette finally gets his lick in at around 8:00. But Groucho continues his oral diarrhea. The class act on this show was sitting on the right of Cavette.

  • Nice middle finger from Capote at 5:20 !!

  • Truman can take care of himself, he does just fine. Groucho was a well known curmudgeon.

  • Epic STFU Grouch

  • groucho was a crank in his winter

  • The groucho guy needs to shut the **** up... he's not funny and just rude. Poor Capote. <3

  • Poor Truman.

  • @Sonicmountain09 groucho is acting like the impertinent & old jewish man type... oh wait ,nvm

  • wow this is so awkward and uncomfortable to watch. Capote is a real gentleman here--I think he really had some respect for Marx's career.
