@ all the "VH's cover is better" one-line wonder toads--
To each his own, but childishly stating VH's version is better is just ignorant & lacks insight
VH can only mimic The Kinks' genius--I mean, this song is from FRIKKIN 1965! It was ASS KICKING ORIGINAL. There'd BE no VH version if not for The Kinks.
They're revered for their contribution to Rock--their originality, versatility, breadth of talent, which has endured for 45 years--with their fan-base still growing!
The classic has stood test of time They sliced the speakers with razor blades in order to get that sound. The Kinks are one of the best rock bands ever.

hello OIWATCHYALOOKINAT am new..tried to send you happy jack by the who. for harmonies and my fav drumsolo in my life so far,...me so new couldn't find address
The Guy earlier mentioned the Creation, I've got a couple of their songs on 45", but listerning to the Kinks compared to the Jam's David Watts, they are totally different, refined to raw power?????
The Kinks were well ahead of their time, look at "Dead End Street" and tell me Oasis were not heavily influenced by that song to write "Importance of Being Idol". The video is even copied too! Love the Kinks, David Watts is such a great example of catchy vocal lines!
Link Wray made the first distortion song and invented the power chords in 1958 in his instrumental "Rumble". He used there power chords not just on the E and A strings but also on the others. But "you really got me " is far better.
Yeah you're right, but there were alot of garage bands around that time who were'nt as well known, you should check out the pretty things, the creation and the small faces if you like this
Well I´m a fan of the kinks and I´m a fan of The Jam. The original David Watts is excellent and the Jam version was very nicely updated, so for me there is not much discussion :)
Both are very mod, not once does it sound in the least... metal, or punk, punk is more edgy and up-tempo.. metal is metal you fuckin twat LOLOLOLOLOLOL

AAHAHHAHAA @ the Jam's bassist.
Springing up and down on his feet like a homo with piles up his arse. They all need a good beating. Paul Weller looks like he just had one. That, or he must have been listening to his own music a lot.
David Watts is on Something Else, a true classic Kinks album. We all the know the golden boy syndrome we all know a David Watts. That's what makes Ray stand out he notices and annotates the ordinary in an extraordinary way. Frechielcfc you're right but of modern bands check out my mates GOLDBLADE and their new single Jukebox Generation...it's on YouTube.
when people say the sixties is dead i say the legacy still lives on because of the animals, the kinks, and other music wich was influeced by those great band such as the jam the who the clash manfred man
I agree but I think part of the problem was the production on their early albums, which was really bad. I imagine if they worked with someone like George Martin they would have left a greater legacy.
im only 18 but have been listening to bands like the kinks since i was born because my dad would constantly have it on in the house and other old music from a bit after the kinks like the jam and the clash, i think modern music is fucking shit compared to what it was back then.its all fucking people singing about shit and x factor winners or fucking rappers. apart from pete doherty who i think is a genius and the libertines and babyshambles are one of few bands that keep the punk feeling alive
I totally agree..good to see someone so young could apreciate music of this genre...like I tell everyone, all artists nowadays sing about is bling and how many women they can get..you're a breath of fresh air..shows not all young people are clueless.
i agree with all you say, apart from the fact that truth be told, i think mr. doherty is the worst excuse for a man and a failure as a front man.... just my opinion though lol
The Kinks, the first true punk band. Banned from performing in the US for 4 years from 1965 to 1969 for being too rowdy on stage. Not even the Sex Pistols had that honor.
