Sorry.. guys.. flame me or whatever this is just as boring and pointless as the EJ concert I saw last night.. everything he does sounds the same nothing new. I have been a fan since Tones came out and I used to watch him at Ray Hennings jamming on old fender twins.. boring..
Everyone be sure to check out CatClemonsOfficial for more great guitar music! Comment and Subscribe too! Would love to hear from all of you, thanks for your support!
anybody know what kind of pickups Oz Noy uses in this video? I read somewhere that he uses Dimarzio Area 58's or custom shop 59's. Which one in this video?
Eric is probably playing this bumpy groove tune by the first sight. That I think must say an incredible ability! I've listen to several Eric's tune but none of which aren't anything like this. So it must be challenging for him to play this sort of music. Especially, one who as been already got well acknowledged for what he does for many years. Thank you so much for sharing this video :)
gotta love the asshole drummers who think someone gives 2 shits about their important opinion....hey, put some of your stuff up publicly, then you can run your mouth.
@DrummerRF cause only a fool would deny that this drummer's got groove, and i dont like people who go critiscizing on youtube cause thats just plain not nice and oz noy would never have gotten him if he wasnt any good. ergo, hating is for bieber fans
@andygjata I thought Youtube was for commenting. And I didn't say is is not good or he has no groove. Well then let's say it differently. I am sure he has groove and that he is skilled, but I do not prefer the way he plays this peticular song at all. He took away some crucial parts of the song in my opinion. I would rather prefer Keith Carlock for this song. Or Dave Weckl. But I prefer him for every song so that statement is invalid.
I love Oz and EJ, but I'm pretty sure Oz would be a bit erratic trying to sit in on Desert Rose. I'm just sayin...Pretty wildly different styles but I still liked it.
Why does everyone argue about who is better? Music is to be played together and to build off what the other is playing. I would like to know how many posters are guitartists...
Looks to me like a lot of critical comments from people who will never be able to play half as well as either of these two guys. To my ears this clip sounds like two guys having a good time playing together. Echoing a few previous comments that exibit a proper attitude, it is Oz' tune and Eric's out of his comfort zone (which is healthy for any musician) and holds his own quite well IMO. As opposed to some of the other commenters who manage only to turn a nice jam into a dick measuring contest.
yep, way too much dick measuring in music. Technical skills are immeasurable compared with PERSONAL VOICE. Something I would have thought was patently obvious.
People comparing the two have to understand that EJ is completely out of his comfort zone. Schizophrenic is very different from what EJ normally plays. That said, Oz is a total bad ass and this was the greatest show I've ever seen. Even non musician friends I brought along loved every minute of it.
Man, Oz sounds great, Eric doesn't sound like he understands groove much? His feel is so awkward here....man, and however said Oz being more comfortable because its tune, the thing is mostly just a one chord vamp. What's there to know? Also this isn't Oz's normal drummer, so it's not like he's sitting it better because of that.
I used to really like Eric, I'm thinking him and I will be moving on from each other. Still, great video! Thanks for posting.
@mirthguitar I agree, Johnson's always been stilted to me. obviously a master technician, but to be completely honest his concerts have always been a bore to me. he needs to relax. take some lessons from chris duarte or something.
Oz Noy is fantastic, but for God's sake he didn't "blow away" Eric Johnson here. Two different styles, and Eric has a music stand in front of him! You think Oz might be a little more comfortable with this tune, maybe??
My only knock on Eric is that I hate when he rushes and plays in front of the beat like he does here. That, and he's a little awkward-looking at times, but the guy is a legend and a master. Love seeing him on a Les Paul here.
I am one of the world's biggest EJ fans (as my username implies), but I have to wonder... what band was HE playing with tonight? He was just playing some old regurgitated licks and totally out of pocket. Sad. He just didn't "feel it" that night. Oh well.
I like both playing, those two player have their own style they cannot be compared one another, but if there any jam between such of oz noy & scott henderson (who has similar style of playing) then you can make opinions..
I think it's kind of silly saying one is better than the other - it's just two great guitarists enjoying each others music and having fun - watch Oz's face on some of EJ's leads - he's just grinning and lovin' every minute of it, and EJ has said himself in interviews that he digs Oz's playing. It's an excercise in mutual admiration and respect...
guys come in!!! EJ is great its not about arguing bout how his tone was better or his records its bout the musicianship and i bet alot of u dont have the chord theory knowledge that he has or the ear so just listen with the set of ears u love music with not the judgemental set...........................
mindreadingradios, Venus Isle isn't Eric's best work are you kidding me.Srv and Manhattan are only good tracks on there everything else sounds like Yani on guitar.Tones Ah Via Musicom the best work he has ever done.
Oz = listening to the band. EJ = listening to himself. And I say that as someone who grew up loving EJ and thinks he's one of the most important electric guitarists who ever lived.
I grew up in austin,tx and a big fan of eric johnson but to be honest ej hasn't put out anything good except tones and ah via musicom. His guitar tone was better back then too.I notice too he plays the same licks over and over the same sequence pentatonics which is very boring especially in a jam situation.
"ej hasn't put out anything good except tones and ah via musicom"
-That's Hilarious! Though AVM garnered him the grammy, many people consider "Venus Isle" his best CD to date. I would agree.
I will agree with you that EJ's tone is nowhere near where it was back in the 80's when I would see him locally. It seems like the big pivot point in his tone was when he developed tinitus. Since then, I haven't really cared for his tone as much. I have to wonder if that's the reason it changed.
I've been a fan of EJ for a crazy long time, but Anton's riffs here are more interesting to me.. EJ seems to recycle too many familiar lines in his playing these days.
Oz tore him a new one...

This is amazing playing on all the guys part. Oz was in his element but Johnson brought his unique voice to the song, which is no easy feat.
