  • My wife and I favourite song, pity we were living very separate lives, to the extent of divorce, altho no hards feelings and no bad feelings

  • Amen brother.

  • the godfather of lovesongs

  • I had a dream about this song last night....I dont know why but i was singing this very clearly.its a very spiritual song!

  • @adamcomedy2 that's interesting...because some days I get out of bed and this song 'starts playing' in my head...I'm not sure why, except that I feel lost...dont know if that's the reason or not...

  • Lamento tanto que no tenga muy buen sonido este video, porque es la mejor canción de Phill Collins... y esta grabación... no otra...

  • That chick is hot.

  • You HAVE to see the movie. It's so bold. It has so many layers. It really deserves more credit. And the song addresses the relationships in the movie, with Nik and his ex; the wall is the Berlin Wall, and the walls we build to move on. And what is selfish? Define... Letting go is altruistic.

Individual art is worth pursuing, and watching out for your flame, which is what Nik did.

There are walls that cannot be taken down. You fly over them.

  • I was only 15 years old when this song came out, this is a very beautiful song, and believe me this is a song of memory and especially your loves ones who have passed on. It breaks my heart to hear this song, THis song is dedicated to my dad Hayward, and my brother Gary whom I lost, you will never be forgotten.

  • I always liked this song, since I was a kid. I never had any idea what it meant, until now.

  • i have just separated from my husband and this song says it all

  • I'm 15 but I've known and love this song for a long time

  • I agree with Animettv ^^

  • think alot of ppl can relate 2 this song,

  • I heard a song from the 80s i think. It was on the radio a couple of days ago. And it was so sad this song is joyful compared to it :)

  • This is what you call music, not that Lady Gaga crap.

  • @jurisd0ct0r I know!! Lady Gaga is just terrible! I don't understand why so many people like her and so many artists want to work with her. Bring back real music. Bring back the 80's!!!

  • yes that is one special song

  • this is the most amazing song that phil collins did along with "Against All Odds" we need this type of music in todays times.

  • i really love hearing this song. it makes my spirit travels so fast....to you!

  • This song is beautiful...

  • Baryshnikov....so sexy!!!

  • Back in the 80's I had gotten the tape just for this song. Lovely!

  • beautiful!

  • i really love this song , thanks for posting!

  • I've played guitar since I was 4 (1960), I'm not easily impressed. But, God a' mighty, every time I hear Marilyn's voice in this song it gives me goose-bumps, near shivers and chill's. The composition of this song is beautiful. However, Marilyn's voice, the arch...

  • @EdwardGordonII I totally agree. This is Marilyn's song. She owns it. Phil is just along for the ride.

  • Luv this song! never get tired listening to it ^^

  • my bestest mat nic luvs this :))))))) just for u hun xxxxxx

  • I always enjoy this lady's voice. She has a sound like Crystal Gayle. With a voice Marilyn should've been a superstar.

  • Does anyone know the name of the opening song of this movie?

  • @Lorica46

its an adaptation of j.s.bach's passacaglia and fugue in c minor.

it sounds a lot like stokowski's transcription of the piece.

  • I was 14 when this Movie came out.

    I have treasured this Song.

Music back in the 80's was some of the best.

  • this song is "Separate Moves"

  • @boricuapower1186 - Hi there!! I was 13, so I'll be 39 soon! I'm so sorry to hear your sad news, but I'm glad you are happy. God bless you. xxxxxxxx

  • how beautiful is this one? that beautiful, i tell ya (:

  • I always feel sad when I hear of Phil singing this with someone other than Marilyn Martin. It's her song as much as it's his. Stephen Bishop is a great songwriter.

  • Great Cold War movie!

  • esto es un temazo y lo demas son tonterias

  • I've just seen this great song on a pop channel while having a conversation about the mindlessness of some of today's obsessions such as facebook. Contrast that with a song with emotion about real life and the real world. No wonder most music today has no soul, when people live atomised lives with less and less value placed on community and interaction face to face. I'm glad I grew up in the 1970's and the 80's,still within living memory but increasingly another world.

  • I 100% agree. I wish I grew up earlier than I did. I was born in 1989 and hate the direction that things are going in but can't help but be sucked into it. Using youtube and commenting on videos is on par with a lot of the other mindless obsessions. Doesn't matter how much you fight it, it's hard to ignore a lot of the the things going on now. You mention facebook. That is destroying real interaction. I really wish that I was born long before the 1990's. Interesting point you made there

  • I don't know about the 80s being a particularly creative decade for movies (maybe for special effects and fantasy movies). In the 60s and 70s, you had the "new Hollywood" (the era of cutting edge, director controlled movies like "Taxi Driver" or "Badlands"). In the 80s, American movies became more producer controlled and correspondingly more commercial and clichéd. But on the other hand, every decade has both good and bad movies.

  • this is real music, music nowadays suck. we need this type of music back

  • @Animettv AGREEEEEEEE!!!!! Music nowadays? WHAT MUSIC?? Thank God 4 the 80s!!!

  • @Animettv yeas we sure do!

  • I remember seeing this movie back on this day Dec 23 1985, it was a good year for movies and this was a good movie with a good soundtrack.

  • He does have a right to ask you how you feel. A Constitutional right - freedom of speech!

  • @rpm773 Dumb comment

  • one of my favorite song that i use to dance to it with my girlfriend at Junior and Senior Prom... i remember those night....

  • maybe the saddest song I've ever heard!

  • I'm going through a broken heart right now and this song says it all. I love it but it makes me sad.

  • dont know who the girl is singing but she looks a lot like a canadian actress called catherine disher.

  • nope, it's marylin matlin

  • @holly2949 Marilyn Martin

  • I love Marilyn Martin's voice on this one!! They're a great combonation!!!

  • this make me soo sad...:(

  • gorgeous song, reminds me of 7th grade....loved the synth ballads of the 80s....wish there would be a revival

  • This song reminds me of the love i lost. After 6yrs it still hurts. Sometimes it seems like i will never get over it.

  • The two refuges such love knows are alchoholism and iraq

  • This song was a knife in the heart when I lost my love. Often I hurt now, almost 24 years later.

  • just awesome

  • Want human emotion watch this movie then comment

  • A very underappreciated pop ballad. I think it is one of Phil Collins' very best.

  • Wasn't it nominated for an Academy Award? I don't recall if it won, though.

  • Ironically, it lost to "Say you, Say me", which was also part of this soundtrack.

But if time is a teller, this song has aged much better.

  • hey! It's Isabella!

  • wtf?

  • spammer

  • that singer chick is hot!!!

  • great song by phil collins

  • this is the loneliest song ever

  • This may very well be the best duet ever sung. Those two voices merge perfectly so beautiful

  • @jp2556817 it sure does!

  • I didn't know that I was giving all the wonderful female vocal credit to Marylin!!

    Thanks for info!

  • Stevie Nicks sings back up in this song. Marilyn Martin went on to sing backing vocals on Stevies 1985 album 'Rock A Little' and the tour. a little trivia for you! :-)

  • Sorry, Stevie did not sing on this... maybe you're thinking of "Sorcerer". The rest of what you said is true...

  • Check out Stevie's website and it says she did. You can hear her saying 'Compromise' after Marilyn first solo part and she sings also when they go into 'You have no right" Don't get me wrong because I love Stevie but Marilyn is the star here. Stevie just did a little back up. :~)

  • Sorry again... but Stevie had absolutely no part in Separate Lives; her website is wrong. Trust me... I was there!

  • marilyn martin had a nice voice...

  • She still does! Just wish she could release something new but this record biz is too focused

    on young singers.

  • from 1985,number one song :separate lives,lol

  • Phil Collins =Gold song=He"s gold

  • this song reminds me of my ex husband, truly wer now living in seperate lives....but as time goes by im still loving him, i dont know why he betrayed and we end to nothing.....love and life are truly unpredictable

  • thanks for the upload..nadagdagan ang pondo namin.,more power!

  • i don't want this to happen to me and my kuya Stephen... I will surely die... hu hu hu...

  • ouch!!!soon to be my fave song.....u build the wall....and u make it stronger!!!!

  • I just love this song. 5 stars from me. An excellent song and an EXCELLENT performance.

  • It was written by Stephen Bishop . It was about his romance with actress, Lesley Ann Downs. What is sung about in the song, actually took place.

  • She was hot!

  • I couldn't find a better song to express what i am going thru :O(

Pretty sad but so true.... it hurts but that is part life.

  • I completely understand your heartbreak, I'm right there in the same situation. Things will get better, that's all we can hope for

  • i'm going through the same thing too.... but it won't be like this forever, we will get over it.

  • what a great song this brings back fond but tragic memorys love the words

  • i love this song..

i really can relate it's been 3 years and i'm hoping someday we will see each other again but for now will go on living separate lives... :(

  • i can relate to this song its been 10yrs

  • I love this song & I've always liked Phil Collins. I saw this film years ago when it was released & enjoyed it at the time. I also watched Mikhail Baryshnikov in another movie about dancers & he is a phenomenal dancer. A lot of men don't like to watch male ballet dancers and think they're effeminate. Perhaps some of them are but MB is not one of them & male ballet dancers have tremendous physiques because of the work they have to put in to become brilliant dancers.

  • He is and will always be the best dancer ever! I know he was with Jessica Lang. I think they broke up.. what a pair :) Stephen wrote some of the best movie songs ever! Thanks!

  • bishops version is more stripped down just a guitar and vocal, still sounds good. as a duet it has more depth and the synths add a spacey quality. lovely!

  • I thought it was Phil Collins who wrote this song?

  • the songwriter is Stephen Bishop

  • Thanks Stephen Bishop for writting this song. Years gone by and still awesome.

  • M. is HOT HOT HOT! Be honest, don't you just want to be with her?

  • Already been with her. LOL

  • memories goosebumps oh my god just got reminded by the king of queens of all things had to listen again!!!!!!

  • it's really hard to get over someone but at the end, it makes sense.... taking baby steps....

  • Love Marilyn Martin, has a great and attractive voice + style. One of the best singer in the world.

  • I loved this movie & this is one of my all time Phil Collins solo tunes!!!!

  • Het is alweer 13 jaar geleden dat mijn relatie met de liefde van mijn leven eindigde, maar dit nummer maakt me nog steeds verdrietig.....

  • still can remember!!!!

  • What ever happened to her?

  • She's a real estate agent in Tennessee. Can you imagine? Not even someone like Bruce Springsteen can stake claim to recording a #1 song, and she's got one. Now you can buy a house from her.

  • Doesn't she also still sing as part of her hubby's recording studio or something like that?

  • This song brings back so many memories. The song/video reminds me of a lost love that never made it. I hope she is well. I miss that Tokyo woman.

  • i'm only 22 but i love this song....

  • I always loved this song.

  • I absolutely love this song but I cant remember who is the female singing.

  • It's absolutely beautiful to see all the positive comments!...yes, this is an absolutely beautiful song! We all have our feelings and associations

  • my friends used to bet to see if I could get through this song without crying-

they always won- I always cried-

    "so you build that wall...."

  • Another masterpiece from a rare legend....Phil Collins!!!!!!!!!!! Enough said....sit back, relax, and enjoy the feeling, meaning, power, and passion behind this wonderful song.

  • Agree!! Haven't heard this song for over ten years. Then, wow! Amazing words that really capture the feeling of estrangement. Great voice. I love the bit where Phil goes "oh, it's so typical...love leads to isolation." What a great line!? Thank God for YouTube that we can still listen to these forgotten gems.

  • A GREAT SONG!!!

  • this is the best!!!!!!!!

  • I can relate to this song

  • Baryshnikov looks SO young in this movie. Well, he WAS so young... good memories of a great era! Phil Collins is wonderful!

  • its a russian ballet film pretty much, but one of the characters is a black american man. a love story. 80s film.

  • I have always loved this song but I have never seen the movie what is it about looks like a spy thriller of some sort starring I think Rob Lowe.

  • the movie is the very forgettable White Nights (1985), though the real winning song from the movie was 'Say You Say Me' by Lionel Ritchie. This song was written by the brilliant Stephen Bishop, who also wrote a great ballad, 'It Might be You' (Tootsie). Check it out.

  • no way, this song was way better. Say You was very commercial. Marilyn martin looks and sound a a bit like a young bernadette peters. where is she now? she
