@adamcomedy2 that's interesting...because some days I get out of bed and this song 'starts playing' in my head...I'm not sure why, except that I feel lost...dont know if that's the reason or not...
You HAVE to see the movie. It's so bold. It has so many layers. It really deserves more credit. And the song addresses the relationships in the movie, with Nik and his ex; the wall is the Berlin Wall, and the walls we build to move on. And what is selfish? Define... Letting go is altruistic.
Individual art is worth pursuing, and watching out for your flame, which is what Nik did.
There are walls that cannot be taken down. You fly over them.
I was only 15 years old when this song came out, this is a very beautiful song, and believe me this is a song of memory and especially your loves ones who have passed on. It breaks my heart to hear this song, THis song is dedicated to my dad Hayward, and my brother Gary whom I lost, you will never be forgotten.
best line in a song ever you have no right to ask me how i feel you have no right to speak to me so kind the 1s that leave can never no the pain...........
@jurisd0ct0r I know!! Lady Gaga is just terrible! I don't understand why so many people like her and so many artists want to work with her. Bring back real music. Bring back the 80's!!!
I've played guitar since I was 4 (1960), I'm not easily impressed. But, God a' mighty, every time I hear Marilyn's voice in this song it gives me goose-bumps, near shivers and chill's. The composition of this song is beautiful. However, Marilyn's voice, the arch...
i will be 41 yrs old soon its amazing. at that age i felt i was untouchable i have 2 kids my first born
is 23 yrs old and my 2nd is 5 yrs old same farther
i had a girl and boy.. i love them so. im dieing but thats not important. before i past i just want them to have an education. then i will die in PEACE. LOVE THE WORLD CATHY
I was about 10 when this song came out..and paradoxically remember a lot of 80's songs ,...even from early 80s.Then I was a child of course ;) ...these words sound sad 2 me ..i even don't know what kind of word should i put ..i believe you'll get right with all of that, we can do almost ev'rything having a faith alive..it would make really miracles
@boricuapower1186 Same with me. I was 15 when I baught this 45. I still have it to this day. I still dig this song and the video. I really loved the 80s. I'm a singer / song writer and that's thanks to songs like this and Against All Odds.
I always feel sad when I hear of Phil singing this with someone other than Marilyn Martin. It's her song as much as it's his. Stephen Bishop is a great songwriter.
I've just seen this great song on a pop channel while having a conversation about the mindlessness of some of today's obsessions such as facebook. Contrast that with a song with emotion about real life and the real world. No wonder most music today has no soul, when people live atomised lives with less and less value placed on community and interaction face to face. I'm glad I grew up in the 1970's and the 80's,still within living memory but increasingly another world.
I 100% agree. I wish I grew up earlier than I did. I was born in 1989 and hate the direction that things are going in but can't help but be sucked into it. Using youtube and commenting on videos is on par with a lot of the other mindless obsessions. Doesn't matter how much you fight it, it's hard to ignore a lot of the the things going on now. You mention facebook. That is destroying real interaction. I really wish that I was born long before the 1990's. Interesting point you made there
I don't know about the 80s being a particularly creative decade for movies (maybe for special effects and fantasy movies). In the 60s and 70s, you had the "new Hollywood" (the era of cutting edge, director controlled movies like "Taxi Driver" or "Badlands"). In the 80s, American movies became more producer controlled and correspondingly more commercial and clichéd. But on the other hand, every decade has both good and bad movies.
Stevie Nicks sings back up in this song. Marilyn Martin went on to sing backing vocals on Stevies 1985 album 'Rock A Little' and the tour. a little trivia for you! :-)
Check out Stevie's website and it says she did. You can hear her saying 'Compromise' after Marilyn first solo part and she sings also when they go into 'You have no right" Don't get me wrong because I love Stevie but Marilyn is the star here. Stevie just did a little back up. :~)

I love this song & I've always liked Phil Collins. I saw this film years ago when it was released & enjoyed it at the time. I also watched Mikhail Baryshnikov in another movie about dancers & he is a phenomenal dancer. A lot of men don't like to watch male ballet dancers and think they're effeminate. Perhaps some of them are but MB is not one of them & male ballet dancers have tremendous physiques because of the work they have to put in to become brilliant dancers.
He is and will always be the best dancer ever! I know he was with Jessica Lang. I think they broke up.. what a pair :) Stephen wrote some of the best movie songs ever! Thanks!

Agree!! Haven't heard this song for over ten years. Then, wow! Amazing words that really capture the feeling of estrangement. Great voice. I love the bit where Phil goes "oh, it's so typical...love leads to isolation." What a great line!? Thank God for YouTube that we can still listen to these forgotten gems.
the movie is the very forgettable White Nights (1985), though the real winning song from the movie was 'Say You Say Me' by Lionel Ritchie. This song was written by the brilliant Stephen Bishop, who also wrote a great ballad, 'It Might be You' (Tootsie). Check it out.
no way, this song was way better. Say You was very commercial. Marilyn martin looks and sound a a bit like a young bernadette peters. where is she now? she

Baryshnikov looks SO young in this movie. Well, he WAS so young... good memories of a great era! Phil Collins is wonderful!

I have always loved this song but I have never seen the movie what is it about looks like a spy thriller of some sort starring I think Rob Lowe.

the movie is the very forgettable White Nights (1985), though the real winning song from the movie was 'Say You Say Me' by Lionel Ritchie. This song was written by the brilliant Stephen Bishop, who also wrote a great ballad, 'It Might be You' (Tootsie). Check it out.

no way, this song was way better. Say You was very commercial. Marilyn martin looks and sound a a bit like a young bernadette peters. where is she now? she
