A great "coming of age" movie in its day. (My Dad's day.) A classic if it were not for the age difference. He was explicitly underage, she was not, so an act of 'rape' was committed . Lost in all of this was some of LeGrande's better work. Not illegal in my day, so we aged ones will have to remember. Haunting, is it not?
So many young women have lost their "Loves" in wars since the beginning of time. We will never learn that wars are a terrible waste, but humans are greedy and always try to take from others. It is a tragedy that we can't come up with another solution...
As flores deveriam ter sido dadas a você. E com elas toda a inocência, toda a pureza do amor que eu sentia por você. Não podemos mudar o que passou, mas podemos refazer o pensamento, o sentimento...sim, as flores eram suas....
\i am 61 now,my summer was 1969,about the time of the movie,\i was 19 she was 42,she had a holiday home on the beach a few miles from \melbourne,I lived in Frankston,I visited each evening, but not weekends as the family arrived. After the summer she decided it was to difficult to keep it a secret,so it ended,I have wonderful thoughts of that summer that will last forever, this music takes me back to that time so does Joanna Scott Walker, same beautiful lady, same memories, same step back in time.
It was long ago and faraway. I was 17, she 24 and married. We haven't seen each other since. I've thought about her every now and then. Such a sweet memory!
My Summer of 72 with Philip, in love from afar, locked in embrace of hope for justice. Our deep friendship ended by death but our love will forever visit in the hope that we will kiss each other once again.
I have this movie and even today...it still grips me. The song is equally beautiful as well.
Sadly, none of it would ever make production today. Is it because we have, in these United States, become so rigid we cannot be honest? Today, Dorothy would be hauled into prison so fast her head would spin.
So...where is our heart? ...our very soul?
Hermie grew up over night, and was that necessarily so bad? I don't know... I think it's so unfortunate we 'box' love.
You'd think they filmed this movie somewhere like Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard, but I heard it was shot north of San Francisco where movies like "Same Time Next Year" "The Birds" and opening scenes of "Murder She Wrote" were filmed. Can anyone out there confirm that for us?
@PunkieDootDoot The kid was lookin' for his first time, and she was steeped in depression over the loss of her husband ... where is the love in that? Oh, by the way, she left (skipping town ... leaving the kid a goodbye note). It did make a good movie though. But I do fail to see the love in it.
@kodachromefilm Well, then you don't know the whole story. The book is autobiographical. Moreover, it's my understanding that "Hermie" Reichters' Dorothy contacted him after the book was published. To my great delight, so did mine. Apparently, The Summer of '80, the year she lost her husband, and one in which my life was a train wreck, was as magical to her as it was to me. Thank you, "Girl on the Beach"for being part of our mutual rescue and thank you for still being my friend.
@kodachromefilm Thank you! Finally, somebody who recognizes the truth! I love the hauntingly beautiful song; however, I don't approve of the storyline. It is about copulation between an adult and a minor. The fact that the adult is a female doesn't make it any more palatable. Minors don't have the maturity to deal with the emotions and responsibilities of such intimacy. It belongs between adults who are in a committed, loving relationship. I was born in the 1940s! I'm a dinosaur!
I am not gay. At least, I don't think of myself as one. I am happily married and have been so for the last 25 years. Have two wonderful sons, and my wife and I are very much in love, still, even after all these years.
In the area, there was an enormous mango tree which we used to climb, positioning ourselves at some of the tallest branches. There, we used to suck on some of the biggest and juiciest mangos at our reach. It was there also, atop that tree, that we first kissed. Our lips, held together by the dried mangos’ juice that run by the side and bottom of our lips as we sucked on it, held us together, and gave to that first love experience an unforgettable flavor and flair.
That Summer was special, as none other before or after. My friend also passed away during that year, while crossing a street on his bike, he was hit by an automobile traveling at high speed. I was close behind, and have blamed myself ever since, for not being able to stop it. While on the ground, I run to my friend’s assistance.
Kneeling by his side, I held his held, and looked at the blood running from the side of his mouth and nose. I kissed my friend, told him he would be OK, and watched him die in my arms.
I still love mangos although the flavor to me is always the same; that of the my first love, my first kiss, my first loss, and the sweetest ,and only boy I ever loved.

We (two friends) watched Jennifer O'Neil's famous movie 'SUMMER of 42' way back in 80's when we were student. It is a wonderful movie which attracts youngsters in that era.
Dear Diane Thank you for eveything you did for me, I never did see you , when I became an adult. I never had the chance to say how ashamed I was of the way I treated you. You gave , and never did you ask me for anything in return. What I loved about you was your feelings for your fellow human, you helped so many people. I am sorry about your tragic life, I wish I could have hepled you, if I only would have known. You are truly my summer of 42. Please rest in peace Diane J Thrush 1951 -2006
Wonderful movie, wonderful music ! after a hard's day work if you arrive tired and bored at home , listen this music you will feel how great the human kind can be ! believe! whithout any religion connection , this music make us to fly to happiness, fantastic, lovely, wonderful, wonderful !
I responded to a penpal add in 1990 in a issue of Cosmpolitan in Spanish and within two weeks she and I were writing to each other. During that time we never met in person for 16 years. Then in the fall of 2006 I traveled from Los Angeles, California to Orlando, Florida by Greyhound bus to finally met her face to face. I can just hear this theme as she and I embraced at the bus stop....after 16 years...
I remember seeing this movie and realizing even back then, what a sacrifice " The Greatest Generation," made. Men and women alike. They all did SO MUCH-at home and abroad. They basically lost their salad days but as my Dad said, ' Well, you did what you had to do.' They are dying at the rate of 1,000 a day. We owe them SO MUCH. Thank you GG. All of you really put your shoulder to the wheel. That scene where the Western Union Telegram tells her her husband killed is heartbreaking.
@bushna2007 Well, don't just keep everyone in the dark here, We're all waiting to here more.My willing and older neighbor happened to be a cranky and crotchety old buzzard that was willing to club me on the side of the head with his tightly rolled up newspaper if I had the T.V on too late at night.
@Soundexpert100 She was a young woman who happened to be on my paper route. One hot summer day she invited me in for lemonade. She told me she had something for me and asked me to close my eyes while I sat on her sofa. She leaned over and kissed me. Our lips only touched at first and I didn't expect that. Our tongues soon danced. Then she took me by the hand and led me to her bedroom. This went on almost daily until school started. Her house burned down and I never saw or heard from her again.
@nyrangers2813 Interesting hmm, As in Celeanese Fortrel Polyester? Man I hope those products didn't make her toxic, I happen to play this piece on the piano and it makes you feel like your near the ocean with the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. Jennifer O'Neill was so gorgeous, with her beautiful skin tone and auburn hair.A real Irish beauty.
I had wonderful fortune of meeting Jennifer O'Neill in person...she is not only gracious, but still as beautiful as she was 40 years ago..a truly 'wealthy' woman, not in money, but in faith in Jesus Christ..i was honored to be in her presence..and she is a true vessel of God..
I saw this movie as a 19 year old kid right before I shipped off to Viet-Nam. I could identify my young awkward teenage years so much with those characters. I fantasized about Jennifer O'Neil my whole tour. She is such a perfect woman. Every time I hear this song I cry. Can't help it but I do.
Jennifer O'NEILL,so beautiful but so sick.Eight marrages is not normal .I believe she was shot in the stomach. One of her marbles is missing. Most people are going to get angry with me.I saw the movie in 1970 and I loved it.She used to be a model for Celeanese products in the 1960's.One of the most beautiful woman ever. She is in a class with Heady Lamarr.
@nyrangers2813 She's a born again Christian now...and she has made her peace with the demons that tormented her...I agree with you that her beauty is priceless..but she's not sick..she was just lost..and I believe she has found her way..
Wonderful Upload 'dorunkon'..Thank you for sharing.
One of the most touching & beautiful love stories to come out of Hollywood ever..
This theme really relates to the innocence of first love and the comforting ability of 2 people who eventually are intimately together for 2 entirely different reasons.
Their ability to fulfill those needs for each other while giving of themselves unashamed is the Beauty of this movie.
E aquela casa Era a casa dela E nada, depois que a vi Pela primeira vez E ninguém que conheci depois Conseguiu me deixar Tão assustado e confuso Porque ninguém que conheci Me fez sentir tão certo Tão inseguro Tão importante e Tão insignificante Ivan Bocalon
She was indeed the beauty of her day. Have you seen her lately? Google her. She continues to be an exquisite lady, possessed of more than simple physical beauty.
Incredible..one of the most beautiful themes ever recorded...a story of love and loss told by music alone..and Jennifer O'Neill had to be the most beautiful woman of her day..a true classic..thank you for posting...
This song brings back many fond memories of my early teens with a willing, older neighbor. I haven't seen her in over 38 years. She was 16 years older than me and would be 72 now! It was all good and will never be forgotten.
@LordGandor3 I did!! You must have missed what wrote about it. Check it out. She was no hotty by today's standards, but kind of pretty in her own way.
@bushna2007 I understood what you said & I was just saying I would have done the same thing as would most red blooded males. Cause its ok if you`re the younger male but not ok if you`re the younger girl. Males are more mature in that respect & can handle the emotions or maybe we`re just dogs at that age Woof !
@bushna2007 Probably in passing. You are part of each other's "precious incommunicable past." Warm memories, and wonderful memories, and they are YOUR MEMORIES! God Bless you. I'm all for human beings loving each other.
No other film affected me like this one did. I was the same age as Hermie when I first saw the film so could easily identify. Plus the haunting theme makes it a classic
my first love and i went on our first date to see this wonderful movie in 1974. till this day this haunting and beautiful song will always have a special place in my heart. p.s. our very first kiss was later that night.
Isaw this movie when it first came out at theater .one of the best movies i've ever experienced. so poinget. based on atrue story. the theme never forgtten, so beautiful.
In everyones life there is a Summer of 42. When a boy becomes a man, the youth is now adult. For Hermmy it was her, for me it was Cathy, but we if we are healthy experience this innocent passing of yesterday into today. Then it was an adult lady rendering needed education today one could be put in jail. But it is a life of living. No film captured this better than the Summer of 42.
essa musica, esse filma,a jenifer o neil, trazem uma epoca da minha vida que pensei que nada pudesse trazer de volta.abençoada seja a internet, que permite essa viagem no tempo da minha vida.
I went to the store and try to find a copy of this movie..Too bad that I didn't find it and most Bluckbuster Video store in my area are closed. It is a good movie for collection indeed.
actually,i never seen this movie coz i was born only 1976 but i fell in love with this music when i 1st heard it being played on piano,so i asked the title to theone playing it...this is a very classic song that would live forever in my heart...thanks for this..
The best love story movie I ever seen. Beautiful actress, nice music, story, plot, setting, pictures and location. It made me wonder about it for a long time. A unforgettable experience for a young man. A happy and sad experience of a wonderful woman.
I heard the soundtrack before I saw the movie. And that was many moons ago. The theme strikes me as very melancholy and haunting. For after I saw the movie, I too related many parallels to the story, in many ways, "My Own Summer of '42". I collect Movies and Soundtracks. I have the original LP &CD Soundtrack and an original VHS of "Summer of 42". I watch this movie and I play the LP or CD whenever the mood calls for it. It never fails, it still brings back lots of good memories, sweet memories!
I still cannot watch this movie w/out crying.Especially the scene in Dorothy's living room where the Western Union telegram is painfully crushed then smoothed out. I was a teenager when this was released and only now am beginning to appreciate the sacrifices everyone made on the battle-front and the home-front. a real shame that feeling doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I saw this movie in 1971 at a drive in and really loved the whole theme and such. I'm from St. Paul, Minnesota and back than they still had drive in's we went to. Now a day's no more............but such a lovely tune........
yeah, it´s true... I Saw this movie when I still was a child, I thought exactly what you´re saying now even in that days... and now I think the same thing
This is a really beautiful song, the movie though old is great but the song remains long after. Relly love this song its hauntingly beautiful...I had a summer once like this that I wil always treasure....my summer of life.
This was the very first romance movie I saw back when I was 17. It has always been a favorite of mine. So much that I know the words by part. The music is beautiful.. I love list
Beautiful tune! Why don't they put out stuff like this more??

During one summer however, I had my first sexual experience, and it was with a boy.
He was my neighbor and to be honest, I don't think I have ever seen another human being as beautiful as he was.
During our Summer vacation, we used to ride our bikes together to the beach, and explore the surrounding wooded area near by.

LordGandor3 1 year ago
@LordGandor3 I did!! You must have missed what wrote about it. Check it out. She was no hotty by today's standards, but kind of pretty in her own way.
bushna2007 1 year ago 152
@bushna2007 I understood what you said & I was just saying I would have done the same thing as would most red blooded males. Cause its ok if you`re the younger male but not ok if you`re the younger girl. Males are more mature in that respect & can handle the emotions or maybe we`re just dogs at that age Woof !
LordGandor3 1 year ago
@bushna2007 Remember her with fond memories. Please do not seek her out today. It would be a huge mistake. You can't go home again.
TheTweeter53 5 months ago
@TheTweeter53 No, I haven't intentions on seeking her out. But I do wonder if she ever thinks of me!
bushna2007 5 months ago
@bushna2007 Probably in passing. You are part of each other's "precious incommunicable past." Warm memories, and wonderful memories, and they are YOUR MEMORIES! God Bless you. I'm all for human beings loving each other.

A great film and the music is just beautiful. Can you tell me which particular recording of the theme music this is please?

No other film affected me like this one did. I was the same age as Hermie when I first saw the film so could easily identify. Plus the haunting theme makes it a classic

The best love story movie I ever seen. Beautiful actress, nice music, story, plot, setting, pictures and location. It made me wonder about it for a long time. A unforgettable experience for a young man. A happy and sad experience of a wonderful woman.

The love story that I did this backed by war.
Because it was a naive boy, Dorothy gave him love.
A human being is naive forever, and there should be it.

Ulitawo 2 years ago
I cried me lot of trouble to see this movie.
The reason was to help with not only the story but also the splendor of the theme music.
Michel Legrand is the best as a musician.
Therefore "Summer of '42 "would be played by various players.
I like this Cinema Sounds Ohchestra most in that.
I feel that it is the performance that exceeded an original.
Thank you for comment.

I am very sorry that you do not watch this movie for you.
I think that you surely cry in splendor of not only the story but also the theme music if you watch this movie.
dorunkon 2 years ago
I still cannot watch this movie w/out crying.Especially the scene in Dorothy's living room where the Western Union telegram is painfully crushed then smoothed out. I was a teenager when this was released and only now am beginning to appreciate the sacrifices everyone made on the battle-front and the home-front. a real shame that feeling doesn't seem to exist anymore.

But the young man is in love with a beautiful married woman in such situation.
It is the natural relations of the man and woman to turn out.

Was the old person mental?
Therefore I think that this movie works in the times of now.
When the man and woman is not only sexual intercourse, the reason is because it teaches this movie.

yeah, it´s true... I Saw this movie when I still was a child, I thought exactly what you´re saying now even in that days... and now I think the same thing
carlines182 2 years ago
When you became an adult and watched this movie, would you be different from the feeling that you watched in childhood?
Even if I grew old, it did not change to feel for this movie.
But it came to tend to be changeable to do it.
Therefore this movie thinks that it is sent cheers to many people forever.
dorunkon 2 years ago
The story is a sad ending.
What time of times is the vain love with a pure boy and the older woman such a feeling in?
Thank you for comment.

A movie always comes together with the memory.
It was time when it was in love with an older woman like Harmie of the chief character that I watched "Summer of "42".
This movie is all the more irreplaceable existence for me.
Of course the splendor of the theme music does not need to say.
