I got this DVD because I was interested in "Burn it Down," but I came to find out that James doesn't go into the slow solo/harmony over the clean section at the end. Was there any special reason behind this? That was the tastiest part of the song, imo.
He tends to favour his third finger over the pinky for licks. A rebel guitarist who doesn't follow conventional finger positioning :P Regardless of what he's doing. Andy James is so diverse and is on a session level. I'm lucky to have a guitar teacher of his level.
YEAH!!!! This cat is a dyed-in-the wool, honest-to-God, bona fide SHREDDER!!! Very impressive stuff!!! Brutally awesome technique!!! Rock on, Mr. Andy James!!! You, sir, are a M****r F****r!!!
I've picked up a lot of stuff just from watching these videos, they're very helpful! For some proof, check out my "My little Jam Track" video :D thanks so much licklibrary! You've taught me a lot!
EXCELLENT SHIT!!! It's STUPID GOOD! It's Andy doing a SICK AND GROOVING Harmonic Minor/Diminished segment that rivals (if not surpasses) anything Malmsteen, Gilbert or Norum have ever done! It's clean (awesome picking technique), creative (interesting runs) and PACKED with feeling (in both left and right hands)... Andy is KEEPING SERIOUS SHRED ALIVE! GOD BLESS this KID!!!
Hey! Right i bought this DVD, i think its great, but the song "Burn It Down" it doesnt show you how to play the actual verse, such as the very begining part in this video :/ I was looking forward to learning how to play that lol! He just shows you a load of diminished tapped arpeggios not the actual verse as shown in the performance and here :/ Im guessing you have to put those arpeggios into the verse?
Some of the techniques are AMAZING! I cant wait to get stuck into it :D
@Guitargodjosh dude it's hilarious but i have bought the same dvds you have without knowing you so i have a question: i have already bought this dvd but haven't got it yet so i was wondering if this is a complete guide that shows you how to play the complete solos, or if it is just an instructional dvd that shows you how to achieve similar licks for creating your own ideas. Thank you so much, good luck. Cheers

@Videoguru184 Hi there - yes depends whether this is what you want to learn? @licklibrary Thank you! Ive just always wanted to learn how to shred and do this type of music. And to solo like that without looking at a tab would be a great accomplishment...

Hey, listen here -- I finally checked out the DVD for this clip... I rate it a buy! (10)
Andy James does an excellent job of demonstrating all the techniques shown on the video. Of course, you have to have some chops to begin with, but it's very interesting to see his approach (for ex., he favors using his ring (3rd) finger where I would naturally use my pinky (4th) finger.) But all in all, he does an excellent job of demonstrating the ART of shred.
@phrygian3rd I like that you need chops to begin with!!! thats cool because there are so many dvds that tll you how topick and do legato etc, but not alot that take it techniques to an extreme level!!

Holy Crap! I stumbled on this video by accident, and I coudn't stop watching... AMAZING! Andy James is living proof that 1st-rate shred is NOT dead!!!
Holy Crap! I stumbled onto a clip of this guy playing -- I was immediately hooked into it! Technique: Excellent. Tone: Excellent. I ordered his DVD, "Metal Soloing Volume 3" within 1 day of hearing his playing. I'll let you know what I think of it.
Using a hair scrunchy on your guitar, on the 3rd fret in this case, is just cheating. No self respecting metal guitarrist would to that to hide their sloppy picking. This guy is good so why does he need to cheat? Did anybody ever see Dimebag do that? or Slash, Hammet, Zakk etc... Anyboy correct me if I'm wrong on that.
no your not wrong. Their is a ton of videos on the net that show that I dont use a hairtie for muting. The shred this too vid for example. I. Plus if you notice, I use it alot more when im sitting down as it is hard in this enviroment to get everything as clean especially when most of the stuff im playing is insanely difficult. When im playing live I dont use it as it is far easier to play standing up.
man your just crazy, Andy is by far the most advanced player Ive seen and ive been playing metal for 20 years.
and the guitarist you named are all my favorites and I have been playing all their stuff for years.
since watching Andy Ive tried useing the hairbow thing myself and yeah it does help a little with extra string noise, or unwanted feedback, but in no way does it wave a magic wand and make a sloppy player clean. andy is one of the best in the world, dont knock him if you cant keep up.
True. But this guy has to learn SOOOOO much soooo fast that I would give him a pass. Look at it this way... Ppl use a capos because they want to play campfire chords on every fret. Its a minor cheat but in the end only other musicians care. The audience doesn't give a crap as long as it sounds good and thats what counts.
@zer0dahero It's actually to mute resonation from the tremelo springs behind the guitar.
With such high distortion, a guitar with high output pickups becomes an untamable noise machine.
Believe me, his TECHNIQUE is fucking amazing, he can mute selectively perfectly well. This is a studio production and as such requires utter perfection.
guthrie, lane, howe, marshall harrison
are they cheating?
Maybe I'll hairtie my guitar and play like them with no practice. Yeah?
the thing on his fretboard is like a sweatband cut down. all it does is keep accidental string hits from sounding. It mutes the strings unless theyre fretted. I want one on each of my guitars, because I have some slop to my playing.
do put in mind that andy james is the most advanced guitarist to this present day but one of the reasons that andy james plays so perfectly is his pratice and also you will sometimes see like you can see on his guitar in this video that there is a capo looking thing at the 3 fret it's not a capo it mutes all that open notes so that everything sounds perfect but gunieuly andy james has the best technique so far and is very strong in his hands and he does use very heavy guage strings
what do you mean the most advanced guitarist? why make up silly facts, really what is the point? there are other guitarists who are just as advanced or even better.
