I, as well, also saw them when they opened up for Faith no More on the "King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime" tour. Awesome show, they still stand out in my mind all these years later.
@PieceofMindmusic That would be because mike morasky, band headman, actually works for valve doing music these days. He produced the soundtrack for portal 2 too.
I like the surname Mor-X. It has a sort of Black Muslim feel to it. Maybe after he makes his Hajj he will get a name like Morhammed or something... I kid... He's one of my all time favorite drummers. I need to re-purchase all their CD's because I played them so much they're scratched to hell...
I remember the first time I saw these guys... dropped 2 tabs (yikes!) and saw them with Mudhoney at the Palace or Palladium... Was up on the balcony, and those audio "samples" really freaked me out. They had me as a fan from then on... I even got to tell Darren Mor-X that he's my hero once. True -- huge influence on my drumming. Great band, totally underrated. Was great to hear "Train to Miami" used for that video game commercial (the thought of them being "sell outs" never crossed my mind).
@SteveAlbinisPussy I first saw these guys open for Faith No More. After that I saw them every time they played our (Portland) infamous Satyricon theater. They did regroup and play our PDX Musicfest in September of 08, but I was out of the country and missed it. Would love to see them live again. I just recently listened to Scars From Falling Down for the first time in a while.
"Scars from Falling Down" was probably SPBT's most "conventional" record, and even that managed to sound off-kilter compared to everything else in the 1990s.
I agree that their earlier work was more groundbreaking though.
@WetWalnuts My favorite was TMOSIM. Just a perfectly flawless record, from start to finish. Yeah, Scars and later stuff weren't as compelling for me. I think they ended it at the right time. It would be great if Genesis and Yes figured that out...
I agree with ink..Some Cocktail Suggestions was the soundtrack to many an imbibing eve in 1990's San Diego. Truly one of the greats along with Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion and The Jesus Lizard.
@TheInterceder Austin is the new SF... "Moving down to Austin to start a psychedelic band..." Even Terry Bozzio moved from SF to Austin. Hey, do the SPBT dudes live in Austin too? Houston? Filthy city. I guess they spend all their tax money executing retards, so what can you expect. I've never seen a more poorly planned city -- cow pastures next to strip malls and trash all over the streets. Good news -- the rest of the U.S. is slowly becoming more like Texas. Kill the poor...
Great band, but their sound at the top ("Some Cocktails Suggestions") was very different and experimental. In this even good track their 'noisy' sound doesn't emerge. Thanks for the video however!
You have dissappointed me, Gabe
