  • I really want to try this technique. but i'm afraid keeping my eye on a target will make me miss the sweet spot on my putter. What do you think Shawn?

  • Great tip again! It's like aiming in bowling where you look at the triangls in the middle of the lane and not at the pins itself. It makes hitting spares and the pocket a lot easier!

  • @caloyjp Great analogy! Thank you!

    Shawn

  • This is a great technique though i have not tried yet i can tell it's a good concept, i liked the analogy in basketball because in basketball, which i also play often, i never even really think about the power much your brain tells you as you take the shot. I have been playing golf for about eight years and i am now twelve years old and over these years my putting has been my weakness and when i go to the golf course tomorrow i will keep this in mind. Thank You Shawn!

  • Wow, that is a very powerful visual. I am convinced it will work.

  • i started doing this last year and my buddies had lots of fun laughing at me...until the worst putter quickly became the best of the four of us. this year lots of questions on how it works :) Clemshaw puts it in words.....IT WORKS.

  • Have taken up golf after playing lawn bowls. Very similar concept to yourp utting video, you see the line, deliver your bowl down the line, if your weight is right then you get close to the jack! Was struggling so much with putting I came across this video and eureka! However, you HAVE to trust your stroke and ignore the negative comments. Everyone I play with tell me this is not the way to putt. I'm an improving 19 handicap and I'll keep you posted of my progress

  • Great bid shawn!

  • Wow. Hours and hours of putts on practice greens and I still couldn't putt. 6 minutes and 45 seconds, and I'm a much better putter! Awesome tip, Shawn.

  • best putting advice ever!

  • Hi Shawn. I am a total beginner golfer. I'm 14 and iv'e only been on a driving range once. I was wondering if you have any videos that show a complete swing

  • You bet!

    All my 154 videos start with the words "Golf Pro lesson..." and then add whatever subject you want like "golf pro lesson sand" or "Golf Pro lesson Driver"; you can see a full listing on my website on the "you tube Shawn' page; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn. I've always felt very uncomfortable following the advice to keep the eyes on the ball. I feel much better (and putt better) when I either look at the hole (or the break point) for longer putts and use peripheral vision to look at the ball and the hole for shorter putts. I've never tried not looking at the ball at all, but I get your point. I wonder if this can apply to full shots?

  • This is tough on full shots as you will have an obstacle with your head going back and will not complete the backswing which is so important; but what you can do is look at a blade of grass behind the ball and then focus on the feel of the swing to the target; see "golf pro lesson eye ball" and "golf pro lesson how to repeat your practice swing" and also "golf pro lesson routine on course" to have more options; you will also love the section in my dvd that talks about blindfolded practice...

  • this is the best golf lesson ive ever seen. thanx a lot shawn

  • sean, you are a god. I have watched nearly all of your videos and my game has improved from a handicap 36 to 7. Pretty much overnight.

  • That is great man! You must me taking your buddies' money right now; you know I make 10% of my students on course income right? :) LOL just kidding! I am very happy things are going well! Shawn

  • Shawn

    Before a golfer keeps his eye on the hole would he not have to have a very good repeating putting swing or else i could see balls going in every direction?

    By the way your video are excellent keep up the good work!

    Mike

  • Hey Mike;

    Of course; that is why I have the basic putting video called "golf pro lesson putting secrets"; and in my dvd I have a full section on the putting stroke and reading greens.

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • I used this yesterday in a competition, ive been practicing it indoors for a week or so. My putting was pretty poor so I just thought what harm can it do? I tell you guys what... I used it for long putts on the last number of holes and they were up there with the best long putts ive ever hit. I even holed one. I just hope I can use it under pressure. For me under pressure means the holes b4 I destroy any chances of having a good round :( Great tip Shawn. I will continue with this one!

  • I can see the logic in this for the longer putts but I dont know if I can trust my stroke enough. Ill practice this in my living room. I know a guy who uses this technique and he wins putting competitions all the time. Im so anxious about my putting that I was actually following the putter head as i was making the backswing. You can imagine the sort of results that was getting me. Ill try bringing this into my game and will let you know the result. Another 5 star video as always! Thanks Gerry.

  • shawn, I want to really thank you for this great video. I was terrible at lag-putt and have tried numerous tips/training aids before and none of them really work. Your video helps me cut 4-5 putts each round. Thanks!

  • I read this tip in a book of Golf Magazine tips and have put it in and out of use for a while. As usual, you explain how it works in a much more engaging, much better way! Putting while looking at the hole is an awesome tip as long as you TRUST your stroke. It helps to have a smooth pendulum stroke already built that you can count on. Thanks for presenting this tip and keep it up! I love your videos!

  • Thanks for the nice comment;

    Shawn

  • thanks a lot man i'll try it

  • Great vid as always! So shawn, going to canadian open this week? You can not have far to that competition it is almost the same block :)

  • Yes; I will try to make it this Sunday;

    I preferred when it was in September; I am just so swamped at this time of year!:)

    Thanks for the comment, Shawn

  • After 34 putts on Friday and 35 yesterday I decided to try your tip on the practice green this afternoon. It worked very well on putts of all lengths. I haven't had that much fun with the flatstick in a while. I don't know if I'll use your method on the course but it certainly helped me regain some confidence. I think my putting routine had gotten stale and looking at the hole engaged my brain in a new way. Thanks Shawn

  • Tried this technique and I one putted the first four holes. most greens left me with a tap in second putt. Yes, this method worked for me.

  • Dear Shawn,

    Love your videos ! I have a question though on this technique. Gary Player on "Playing Lessons with the pros" says the most important thing amateurs can do is to LISTEN for the ball to drop in the hole, but he says "they can't do it". The point is, it keeps the head still. It seems to help me.

    But your video is in contradiction with this philosophy. What do you think??

    Thanks! Keep the videos coming...

  • Thanks for the comment;

    Not exactly! The head is still steady while I look at the hole isn't it? The key is to maintain the focus on the target throughout the stoke. You can choose to use this technique or the conventional one as they are both good; this is another option that is very much needed for many golfers however...Shawn

  • Great tips and vid as always, Mr. Clement. Haha, you missed those putts because the coin interfered with the path of the balls; otherwise, they would've been great putts.

  • i love to try this technique.... thanks shawn coz lots of your video really help me to reduce score.. may you and your family happy always....

  • This works! May look different..but, it works.

  • Thank you Shawn,very much. Started golfing a year ago and would shoot 58+ on our local 9 hole course. Thanks to you I'm shooting 36-34 (par 32)and just bought a new set of Taylormade blades which I'm loving.Down side being that friends wont play me anymore cuz they never win. Keep up the good work Shawn! Love your videos.

  • Shawn, if you get a chance check out Fred Shoemaker's book on putting. A lot of stuff along these lines. Really improved my putting tremendously.

    A great drill: Stand some distance away from the hole. Close your eyes and try to walk up to the hole and stick the handle of your putter in the hole. EVERYBODY comes up short when they first try this (and most start walking very slowly as they get nearer to the hole). It helps you learn to stay connected to the target.

  • Very cool! I will see about getting a copy!

    Thanks, Shawn

  • thx Shaun im 11 years of age and my handicap

    is 12 and your lesson has really helped

  • Thanks Shawn. I'm a 9 handicap, half of which is the result of chronic poor putting. I'm going to try this. Maybe all of it won't work for me but maybe some of it will. I'm in a place where I'm willing to try anything. I enjoy your teaching, If I was a little closer I come take a lesson.

  • Let me know how it goes!

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Shawn, the real key in this lesson is trust. In order to do this well, self #1 has to be shut up so that total trust can be given to self #2.

  • You have been reading the good stuff haven't you!

    Can't wait to start exchanging comments with you in the next 2-3 months as I intend to make a few videos on each chapter of the original manuscript! Yes, it will take a few times out in the pressure cooker to trust this method; I came back to it at Pinehurst #2 when my caddie kept pointing to specific spots to putt to and I putted very solidly with 27 putts for the day...Thanks for your comment! Shawn

  • I think I'll adopt this tip for lag putting. For anything inside of 20 feet i think i'll stick to my normal routine: lining up the line on the ball with the the aim line, focusing on taking my putter back to the right distance (6 inches, 12 inches, etc), and follwing through.

    One thing I'd like you to point out, Shawn: "Accerlerate through" is equivocal. People can't "see" acceleration. The only way to do it is to have a folllow through that is longer than the back swing.

  • If that didn't hit the quarter it would've had enough momentum to go in :)

  • This sounds good but I do not see anyone on the PGA Tour doing this... It does make sense but why don't more pros use this technique?

  • Great Question!

    A lot of tradition involved and too much pressure for most to handle; Johnny Miller did this for a while when he was struggling with his putting and Tom Kite would putt with his eyes closed at one point too. For many of you guys, it will take a while to perform this under pressure and for some this will be a breakthrough!!

    The question is, are we strong enough to face the criticism...I know I am, otherwise I would not do what I do! :)

  • Shawn, do you personally putt looking at the target all the time like you just demonstrated?

  • There is an LPGA Tour player who uses this technique every time she putts. I just cannot recall her name right now.
