  • awesome movie

  • "It's just so awesome." Yes!

  • I like the movie but it wasn't exactly new in my eyes.

  • What's the song at the end?

  • ur a moron the story is more important than the alien fights

  • MAN I LUV THIS MOVIE!!

  • most people come down too hard on this movie, its great because of how realistic they protray aliens. unlike transformer 2, the story actually makes sense and the action didnt give me a fuckin headache

  • what film did you say i saw low buget crap :O?

  • this movie suced on all levels, waste of time

  • best 2009 movie

  • ahhh I love this movie!!!! The shots, the cg, Wikus, and the prawns-almost everything was just amazing! I normally would have been slightly annoyed at some of the demonized military but really I did not feel like the movie was being blatantly manipulative at all or preachy at all, probably because of Wikus. He's such a rich and great character!

  • A lovely movie that potrays the idea that the humans are the biggest monsters of them all...

  • I agree with konman001

Avatar was just too blunt with its enviromental and political messages.

District 9 not only was alot more subtle, but it had much more believable aliens.

Not only did they look more alien, but they just seemed more real, the Avatar aliens were too perfect to be believable

  • If you want a pretty, polished hollywoodised bonanza with characters and situations that make sense and are predictable, along with a budget bigger than god's bank balance, then see avatar and shut up

District 9 is a fucking masterpiece, it leaves an open ending with a lot of interpretation and plot holes that have been put into the script on purpose; which are meant to leave you discussing possibilities, which any great film is supposed to do

  • Indeed. I didnt know anything before I vivided this film and came in my pants several times. If you havent seen it, you must do so or get eyeball-cancer.

Seriously. Best sci-fi in modern history. (Modern sci-fi history began at alien. Yes, shut it and get with the program)

  • Another great movie. Definitely deserves your golden award. Hell it should get platinum =P

  • Couldn't have said it better myself, man!

  • Watched it on DVD yesterday, it was amazing. I would have thought it would get an 18, but I dunno. There's quite a bit of gore and lots of swearing.

I felt sorry for Wikus and the prawns, Wikus was a really nice guy and didn't deserve to be hunted like that. Really showed how humans could be huge dicks.

  • I was expecting a cool sci-fi, what I got was a political statement.

  • So you wanted a bunch of fairy-looking aliens with boobs who do not look much different from humans and act like they live in a wonderland setting? Also. . . you don`t think Avatar was a political statement? - It certainly was - liberals like Al Gore probably came while watching it.

I loved District 9 - one of the best SCI-FI flicks I have seen in years. I saw it after I saw Avatar and in my view it was a far better story with far better acting and with what I would call more human soul.

  • At least Avatar had cool graphics. The story was not new in either film as far as the political side, but I minded it less in Avatar because there was enough side action. Lots of sci-fi has political messages, I just thought 9's could have been wrapped in a prettier dress.

  • I think that the point in District 9 was that the events it depicted would not be wrapped in a pretty dress. The political side it represents show a realistic side of human nature - which sometimes is rather ugly.

Avatar was pretty - I agree - and perhaps you liked Avatar because it offers a few hours of escape from reality - it sort of has a feel of going to a stage theater or opera. I still liked District 9 more since it had a better story, characters I cared for and more human soul.

  • why wont the humans let the aliens leave

  • They want the weapons

  • they won't weapons from them.

  • I never liked reviews that hides spoilers but this one gets pass.

  • Just watched the movie yesterday. Best review yet. You sum up the movie nicely. I hope the Wikus guy gets an Oscar nod. He was superb.

This Movie is definetly best watched spoiler and trailer free. I was lucky enough to just see the teaser. I ignore all press beacuse I had no interest inwatching it at the time. A friend of mine reccomended it to me, and the rest is history. If you haven't seen the movie watch it now people!

  • i rented this on blu-ray but now i wished i didnt because im going to buy it and its going to cost me overall more since i payed to hire it.

every post/comment/review ive read or watched i was skeptical but after watching this on blu-ray the hype was 100% true its a must own

  • sorry apartheid is pronounced apar-TATE

  • This is what happens when you give a good director a small budget,it forces them to be creative. If this was an amateur director with an $200million budget, they most likely would have filled the movie with a whole bunch of special effects just because they could.

  • *cough* transformers 2

  • 2:54 District 9 doesn't remind me of Halo in any way...If it did, I would probably hate the movie. If this movie was full of happy colorful, cheesy effects, yeah, then it would remind me of Halo. Luckily District 9 is hard, tough and gritty when it comes down to visuals, everything Halo is not.

  • Originally Neil Blonkamp was supposed to make a Halo film, but it fell through so he made this instead.

  • @mitrooper shut up dude, ur not a halo fan. Maybe those ships and maybe the guns (that are actually props from the shut down Halo film) don't look like Halo stuff but they are. The real Halo film was going to be gritty anyway, but Hollywood thinks just like u, and almost shut down Neil Blomkamp's entire carreer. U r part fo the reason why we almost did NOT have Neil Blomkamp directing anything, cuz u didn't support his porject the 1st time.

  • another thing that was totally ridiculous is the whole idea of going around this refugee camp serving eviction notices and getting alien signatures! how absurd. the humans took them out of their ship and put them their in the first place. they need no cause in serving an eviction. as if the aliens had tenant rights or something. the best scene IMO was at the beginning when they first cut into the alien ship. that was a wicked creepy moment reminded me of aliens. they didn't come out for 3months!

  • first of all, with the alien technology being so far ahead of our own, it just makes no sense at all that they would be living and behaving like animals. much less allowing humans to control them to the extent in the movie. how the SA gov. could contain them given their incredible technology is a total mystery. the aliens appear to be completely ungovernable, disorganized, and primitive, yet they are riding around in the intergalactic rolls royce.

  • You might have noticed when they first entered the spaceship the aliens were weak and living in slum like conditions. Probably because of some disease, the point is they were all in veyr very poos condition. They were in no condition to fight, and by the time they were the humans had already taken most of their weapons and those who were left wasnt enough to fight off the humans.

  • hmmm maybe. they said there were over a million of them on that ship. i think they should have shown a little more about the first contact moment. that would have made a lot of sense given such an historical precedent.

  • You know the movie actually mentions that the aliens are a kind of hive mind. That is, all the really smart ones are at the top and without them it all falls apart. And if that wasn't enough - (just to make the comparison) how many humans do you know using computers and driving cars actually know how they truly work or better still would know how to build one - from sctratch??

  • that's an interesting point but since there were over a million of them on that ship at least one of them should have known something about flying the ship or fixing it. another thing: they said there was no activity from the ship in decades at the end of the movie, yet somehow that space ship that was under the ground in the slums got there. someone would have noticed it leaving the mother ship at one point. even if they couldn't fix it, it still doesn't explain their crazy behavior.

  • the vast majority do not. ignorance is bliss

  • what i took from it is that most of the aliens were simple workers, and from their world/social structure, were not given any training or anything to help them move past their situation.

  • i just saw it yesterday and i agree that it is profoundly original and innovative in its delivery and the story is unique as well. the special effects were incredible and easily on par with that overblown jj abrams trek shit, which was one of the worst sci if movies ever. but i was a bit disappointed with district 9. the imagery and atmosphere were very well done, but i think there were some serious holes in the plot.

  • props for mentioning enemy mine. that was a great sci fi film.

  • Incredible movie! Perhaps not the greatest film ever made, but for what it is, and the budget, this film was superb. The brutally honest social satire, commentary and underlying subtext on humanity are terrific!

Sharlto Copley was absolutely fantastic. Considering he has basically never acted before, his performance was nothing short of brilliance in his ability to captivate the audience and take them on a rollercoaster of emotions for the most part, all by himself!

    Great Movie! Go Sharlto!

  • jst downloaded it on my laptop ..watched it was cool. but did not get enough action

  • its not rly a action movie

it is a movie that has many faces a moral lesson a action story and a psychological story

  • foken awesome

  • I just went to see this film earlyer tonight. I loved it! It realy desplays the notion of racism in a way that is obviouse, but at the same time not telling you literaly. Most of us know what racism looks like, and just the bahavior of all the characters and how the plot develops makes it so it doesn't NEED to preach at you. It realy makes you see how the selfishness of humanity is compleatly destructive. The only thing that gets achived happens when people work together.

  • Amazing movie.

  • the fly?alien nation?great scfi movies...i beg 2 differ....so if their in your top ten.....man i disagree

  • Agreed 100%. I finally got to watch this in the theatre and it is just absofreakinglutely the awesomest sci fi movie I've seen in many many many years.

  • I really hope McFarlane or Neca toys decide to make some action figures based on this movie THIS is how things should be done with movies nowadays not takin over by fast food premiums or lame bs to make tha film appeal to kids etc hell even my fiancee liked this movie which is a shock!! Anyways good review Fury and what are ya top 10 sci fi movies of all times? I really hope Dune and/or Blade Runner is in that list

  • THE halo sniper comes out in the movie

  • Its not a halo sniper you fucking nerd

  • HALO

  • Is a 35-second intro really necessary...

  • I saw it yesterday and it was incredible. I agree witgh everything you said in your review.

  • are you aloud to bring your camara in the theatre

  • Let's hope there will be a Halo film one day.

  • thats rare for you to give out the gold fury.

  • This film and Star Trek were the only fantastic movies to come out this summer.

    Everything else was shit.

    This film was AMAZING.

  • stfu noob

  • Blow me, whore.

  • i thought it was amazing. the "fluid in the face" thing made me roflamo.

  • Your thoughts on this movie are about equal to mine. Good job FotFF.

  • dude, did you just take a camera into a movie theatre for your intro? and NO ONE noticed?

  • THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING OVERRATED!

  • Well, what would you rate it (X/10)?

  • 7/10 tops

  • This movie was.... err, predictable, to say the least.

Kind of a hammyish, hollywood ending.

  • LOL, I was thinking of The Fly when his nails fell off, and teeth fell out.

  • lol your right batman & Robin is so much better, please think before you talk.

  • cant wait till it starts playing here in Uruguay

  • This movie was awesome definately the best movie of the year

  • Loved it.

  • I wouldn't say it was the best on the planet, but I can tell you, I was riveted. I loved the action and character development.

  • best movie of 2009,10,11,12,13,etc. It is all deserving of its praise. If it shows me something different which it did it is deserving. 5 stars baby

  • jusblaze99 you're retarded voodoo has existed in african culture and still exists today. It wasn't made up by Hollwood. How can you be upset that the origins of the species wasn't explored? The ads never set it up to be an indie docudrama. There has to be some mystery/intrigue to the story and let the audience have some imagination. I hate when dumb people don't appreciate intelligent work. Take your "I dont get it" attitude elsewhere.

  • It was an interesting film, fresh and quirky, but I can´t really see how it´s deserving of this reviewer´s hard on for it. The only really remarkable thing about it is it´s different to what we´ve been accustomed to in this genre, but on repeated viewings I doubt it will stand to such praise. Also the Apartheid analogy isn´t so clear as ultimately, the aliens just wanted to go home and as they couldn´t, were stuck there. Their integration into human society was impossible.

  • Hey JoeCanton22, you need to listen better. He said "Aliens"(not "Alien"). If you haven't seen it, you should, and you will know the reference was "right on the money".

  • would be totally stupid not to watch this movie to save 20 bux. Sooner or later everyone will watch it weather you like it or not. One word for it - 'Unique'

  • It was a really good movie. I thought it would be MUCH different from the trailers, but that doesnt matter cuz iI loved it. I can see why some people wouldnt like it, it has drama and talks about slums and things like that so that could be seen as boring but I think thats why I liked it. These aliens didnt come and conquer the world all badass like that, these aliens were like more like people than what aliens are normally thought of as.

  • At one point in the vid, Fury, you said "I havent been this blown away since James Cameron's Alien." Well, Alien was directed by Ridley Scott, dude. lol

  • alienssssss I said

  • Oh, sorry. I heard wrong. I stand defeated lol.

  • now Finish Him!

  • Furyality! lol

  • I just saw the movie Yesterday, awsome. I understand why its R now, XD! Remended me of some Anime whilst watching it too, such as Berserk, Gundam, and even Elfen Lied. Simply an amazing movie. But I have to admin, the ending with "Flowers" was a bit sappy XD!

  • @JoeCanton22 you got pwned by fury bro

  • fuck u man i loved it was really violent and gorey but it was worth 20 bucks reeses pieces and popcorn

  • ps: how many movies have a website created, to give it that eery "real" feeling...check it out, google MNU, its well done, and the guys a young up and coming director who recently graduated from the vancouver filmschool, i have mad respect, because i know i could never create anything close to this... i give it 9 stars out of 10...once again thats my opinion...

  • A B budget movie, with an A budget money supply??? come on dude, for a sci-fi, it was one of the better movies out in a few years, its all opinions, and rarely can a director hit in on the spot for every person, so dont tthink so persoanly, in a way you would have changed it, many people would say that was dumb, and would derive from the plot... people have to try writing and directing their own movie, then they can criticize all they want

  • exactly the spoiler and trailer totally led the viewers off of what this whole movie was about, saying "theres many secrets in district 9" there wasnt any secrets at all it was just a holding place for the aliens they totally led us off that it was going to be something totally different i liked the movie but they couldve made it a little better

  • The secrets were how the aliens were being treated, what was going on between the humans and the "prawns".

  • yes there was there was a secret ship under the ground. and they were testing the alien weapons on aliens.

  • Is this going to be released in the UK because today is the 18th and it still isn't out in my local cinema... Anyone know? Proper desperate to see this!

  • Uhm, you can check the website. =]

  • I think it's released in the UK on the Friday 4th September, Google says so anyway...

  • Yeh, That's what i read. Thanks for looking it up.

  • i just watcht the movie

    i have no coment

  • You don't want to spoil what happen to the main character but your reference to the movie "the fly" totally spoil it.

  • that is hardly a spoiler, That's like saying hearing there's alien weapons is a spoiler, or that they go into the ship at some point. Those are not spoilers those are details of plot. If you're going to nit pick then I hope you don't see a single district 9 trailer just close your eyes and go la la la

  • My top 3 Films of the summer:

    1-UP

    2-District 9

    3-Star Trek

    Bottom 3:

    1-Transformers 2:Revenge of Michael Bay

    2-Transformers 2:Revenge of Michael Bay

    3-G.I. Joe

  • star trek SUCKED if you know what a good movie is lol. I liked "Away We Go" "District 9" and idk... Not many good movies. :D

  • can someone tell me what the story is about?

cause i want to see it but dont want to spend money for something i might not like!!

  • Who pays money for movies anymore?

    sneak in.....Or find it online.

    dont be so lazy

  • it's a great movie and it's only made better by going in not knowing what to expect. if you like sci-fi YOU WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE!!! do yourself a favor, don't ruin the story and just see it.

  • you will love it demon

  • Superadvanced aliens run out of gas on earth, they take 28 years to make a new tank of gas, they turn a guy into a bug on accident, they eat a bunch of cat food, the guy who got turned into a bug blows stuff up, an alien takes the new gas and leaves, the movie ends........and then people started booing.

  • Nice story, what is the point of the booing?

    I'm gonna watch it!

  • get a job, gf, life something atleast...

  • its complicated but i can assure youll like he movie. thers an awsome giant mech fight at the end. :)

  • it was like watching et for the first time just more epic and gorey

  • Sorry--correction: a corporation, not a private company

  • this the best science fiction movie I've seen in a very long time. It is the best action movie of the summer I've seen.

  • I agree--but one important distinction: MNU was not a government aagency--it was a private corporation. Profit-motivated.

MNU was contracted by the government as a private contractor--just as the U.S. does in Iraq. With many of the same results (remember Blackwater?)

  • This movie was the shit. One of the best new movies I've seen in years. It provokes real emotional responses from all its characters, and its got great action scenes to boot. Not many movies can create such a masterful balance between these 2 factors. If you're going to spend money to see any movie this summer, see district 9. Seriously.

  • As a die-hard gamer I was pissed when I found out Halo was being scrapped for this.

But this movie is so good I no longer care.

  • man, anyone saying its the best movie ever, is because its probbaly the best movie thats came out in the lasdt feew years.... what would you say is the best movie ever?? i dont even understand how one can view a single movie" as the best movie ever".. i know my spellinhg sucks, but im inebraited, and dont bother to fix and correct myt typing errors like i normalky do...

  • i never pay to see a movie twice...but district 9 will be my accpetion... such a kick ass film, more than just a sci-fi, its cahracter develop was unparrall to most other sci-fis, and it wasnt short on any action scenes... fuck this movie was insane.... INSANE!!! go see it, if you havent, you wont be disappointed (if you have a brain, and arent a panzy)

  • What an AWESOME MOVIE! Dear God I loved this film. Unique, honest, full of spirit, engaging, mysterious, heart-wrenching...the list goes on and on. I agree with Fury. This masterpiece goes on the list of Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of All-time. Was there even anything wrong with it? Too much cursing? Makes it more real. Camera too shaky? Gives it that uniqueness, and it's definitely watchable.

Thank you, Mr. Blomkamp. Thank you!

  • it was the best movie i have seen in years, and watch it bust box office sales.. its going to win awards aswell, the one thing about it, is anyone who is faint hearted, and cant sit through some of the more graphic scenes, wont ike it as much... 2 people left when i saw it and didnt return, they couldnt handle some of the scenes, and decided the movie was going to be a fucked up gore fest...little do they know it only made the movie better, and the scenes were neccessary...

  • I saw this today, I was AWE STRUCK! I was watching it and I was thinking "man, all this needs is a robot battle or a robot fighting period" later on, I was surprised.

this movie has EVERYTHING i could ask for in a sci fi movie!

  • its really a good movie

  • sweet review, this single handedly is going to make me see it!

  • being a half-life fan I'd be more than happy for Neil Blomkamp to take it on! seriously after watching this movie...I thought I saw an alien weapon similar to the Gauss Cannon!!!o.O

  • dude I thought this review was about the movie "District 9?" who gives a crap about ur fuckin Halo. If I want to discuss about "Halo" i'd type in the word "halo" alright. so please be clear about what ur discussing for future references. Dumbass....

  • who are you talking to?

  • i never thought that seeing a human body explode into pieces could be so satisfying until i saw this film.

  • ehh i thought this movie was okay, it was explained very very differently then i thought it would be and maybe thats why people didnt like it but otherwise then that i liked it 8/10

  • exactly we wanted more action, a full shoot em up alien killer or human killer movie, it left the ppl hanging. These 10 year olds cant understand that! Good call

  • haha yeah i know all the people were pissed because it was more like a documentary into a movie type thing and everyone wants action action and action!

  • yeah i know what u mean.... it was good, but i expected more plot, less head explosions, but it was still good.......not the best movie ever, sorry guys

  • more plot? did you want them to go into every detail of everyones lives, if you thought the movie was short on plot, you must either be undereducated, or unabe to think while a screen is projecting an image and noise.... seriously dude, this movie had so much going on, that your idea of a plot, is limited to hollywood movies... name a movie with a better, more devolpedplot, that you iked more than this in the last year??

  • You moron, if I were undereducated, I would have been complaining about a lack of explosions, not asking for a less generic alien flick, which, imo, it was in many ways..... anyway ALL I'm saying is that, it was a really good movie, but it was NOT as advertised, it was slightly racist (voodoo, an efficient african-run human to alien black market with interspecies prostitution). As far as plot- nothing new really, and you know it. It also had a few really stupid errors... i mean WTF why would....

  • ....they integrate the aliens in the first place, that would never happen in real life- "Oh yeah, lets put these retarded worker aliens in an African slum and hope that they don't cause massive damage and possibly infect us with something." In real life, they would have built a secure facility and quarantined them inside and tested them, and you know it. Second, did they rlly think that serving the stupid worker aliens with notices to leave would be effective in any way....

  • The trailer doesn't lie, it tells you exactly what you can expect in this film. Anything creepy expected is purely subjective. And aliens don't need origin stories, the best aliens around killed a whole crew on the Nostromo without Ripley even knowing where the damn thing came from.

  • the trailer says "there are many secrets in D9" and then the rest of it is documentary-like, and it doesn't really reveal any of the plot, so that made me think the plot must be so unique or different that they didn't wanna give it away (kinda like The Matrix, the trailers were like that bc the story was a surprise). this movie was mostly action though. the action was good, and the effects were too, but it was a chase/action movie, not some indie-docudrama like it set itself up to be....

  • also, saying a sci-fi film isn't "realistic" is an oxymoron. The whole thing was an allegory for the apartheid system. Racism deeply institutionalized in a government with the guise of following legalities.

  • how is portraying voodoo and interspecies prostitution racist? Gross maybe but definitely NOT racist, especially when the director is from the place he's filming.

  • maybe the voodoo and stuff werent technically racist, but the voodoo served no purpose to the plot, and honestly i had an african gf, and shit like that in movies just reinforces certain stereotypes about africa, which pissed her off......

  • Plenty of Religion enforces the belief of eating something to take its power and when it comes to plot, did you miss the whole point where the gang leader want the power because he could then use the alien weapons he kept stacking and take over the country?pretty important to the plot I say..And as for stereotypes, every country has their poor, I really can't see how someone would call a depiction of a slum a stereotype.

  • research nigerian gangs, and the south afircan apartheid, the directors inderictly relating to that.... how the white scum enforce all these rights upon other beings, be it terrestrial, or extra terrestrial, that show a difference to themselves, the movie was powerful, showing this theme strongly, with how a huge multi-national company was taking control, and exploited for their own personal gains... it was an indie director, but peter jackson sponsered, so it had money, what were you expecting

  • ok so basically the movie was good action wise, and the plot was good, but to me the trailers made it out to be different than what it was..... all im sayin is that this movie wasnt as smart (or indie) as it made itself out to be based on the trailers...... so as a stand alone film i give like 9/10, but based on the trailers, im sorry but like 7/10...... the plot was not too unique as to not reveal any of it during the trailers, and i wish the commercials wulda let me know it was a chase film

  • like one clip on the commercials was on the ship, a human interviewing a prawn, asking "how do your weapons work?" etc.... THIS WASN'T IN THE MOVIE. Not too big a deal, but it was a chase flick, not as mysterious and original in the ways that the ads made it out to be. BUT is WAS very original and good in many other ways (the effects, the unknown actors in a bigger budget type film, the terrain etc) which i think the ads could have focused a little more on, again, not a big deal im just sayin

  • indie? give me a break. It was a 20 million dollar budget and they made it look like 150 mil. The commercial made it look like all action, with a bit of cool ideas. The movie has lots of subtext, lots of different messages, I loved it, feel bad that some people couldn't feel it.

  • just question but how can you sit there and give a film a conditional score out of 10.HOW!

  • Neil Blomkamp stopped the production of Halo because of money issues. But Stephen Speilberg is taking over for the movie and the guy who wrote gi joe will write the story.

  • The guy who wrote gi joe? Oh man, the halo movie is gonna suck.

  • I am so pissed of that I can't flippin see this movie. All the freaking good reviews it's gotten. I am PISSED.

Oh man, hell it reminds me of games.

  • It deservers a 10/10 to me.

    I loved it.

    Story

    Animation

    Plot

    Characters

    YOU NAME IT.

A 2nd one is rumoured to already be in the works :)

  • "sometimes a complete monster" good one

  • i think they will me a 2nd one

  • It's was sad to see scifi junkies walk out expecting some glorified alien splatter-fest. I think this film was phenomenal! Definatly a 10/10

  • yes this movie is really good i give it 9.5 stars

  • The Movie Was So Good I Finished All My Popcorn.

  • the theatre i watched it in applauded :P thats weird...

  • comes to show how awesome it was...

  • funny my theater applauded as well--that's not a weird thing if you've ever gone to a really good movie-that's what people do--i guess it's weird if you've never seen a good movie

  • actually i was with a group of 10, we all thought it was bad, only thing ppl seemed to like was the lightning gun, nothing more. Some even said they wanted to get up and leave, so its not just me. Trust me, ive seen plenty of movies over the years, this was by far not the worst, but far far from the best and most entertaining!

  • wow lightning gun shiny--grog like

  • you fail at life.

  • Niche79 you're a fucking idiot. kill yourself.

  • ...I didn't think they let retards go to the movies now days.

  • The aliens litterally ripped people apart and it had a shit load of action that kept you entertained
