Hard to say.

I think the answer is, to some extent, the GOP always had to mollify a fringe of xenophobic, religious nut rubes since the Reagan days...but since Bush Jr, I definitely feel like the GOP has sort of "jumped the shark" in terms of its ideological development. The die-hard GOP "base" today seems comprised of folks who are straight out of central casting.
