  • Simpleton Simon is more like it.

  • Oh man, this has been in my head for the last few days for some reason so I decided to see if it was up - thanks for posting! LOL I always remembered the snake sighing "it was too good to last." The memories!

  • @sawing14s

Actually Derek Lamb was the director and Jeff Hale was the producer

  • Man why in the world did they drop the age group of today's Sesame Street? This stuff right here is proof that CTW actually made learning fun, and not all babyish like today.

  • Poor Simple Simon

  • Haha! "It was too good to last.." Poor snake.

  • I think Simple Simon needs to lay off the 'shrooms!

  • thanks for the memories

  • in my parody i use a secret code word per tape this tape was FORK FEET so in my skit i said NOW I KNOW WHATS WRONG sheep dont have fork feet

buy ya i wonder if simon has the sheep feet LOL

  • I love how Simon is so clueless." Ah ha now I know what's wrong. Sheep don't wear boots!" LOL I like the snakes accent. It sounds Mexican or something.

  • awwwww poor snakeeeeyy!

  • this is the real sesame street. not the nonesense they av now. my 5 yr old daughter and all comented that the new one isn't good. love that snake. he he.

  • Sounds like the duck was mad at the snake. But why didn't he sound mad at the sheep?

  • I love the surrealism...since I was eleven.ThePeter Lorry snake is the undisputed star of this clip!....."It was too good to last!"

  • 0:21 is dying to be looped!

  • snake..." something is wrong but this is great"

  • Sheep don't wear boots! I remember this from a long time ago! Brings back memories!

  • @playmates101

It brings back a lot of fond memories to me too!

  • Oh, Simon.

  • all good things have to end someday :(

  • The snake really liked flying and walking. Kinda feal sorry for him when he had to give it all up.

  • The duck should be more sympathetic to the poor snake: birds don't understand how lucky they are to be able to fly without having to pay ripoff airlines. It WAS "too good to last". :(

  • The snake sounded just like Peter Lorre!

  • @bigg3469 im pretty sure that was an intentional imitation.

  • Great music! But it's really a little odd...renaissance-style music, but with a baroque recorder, cello (instead of Viola da Gamba) and what seems to be a Flemish or French harpsichord where one might expect a lute or virginal. Also, it's got basso continuo accompaniment--anotgher baroque feature. Oh well.

  • Heheheh look at the man feet on that sheep

  • i love this cartoon-tori

  • Carla Piper? Great music. Yes, very much like Steamroller.

  • This freaked me out as I little kid, but I liked it anyway, and the music is unforgettable.

  • @LeftSock06 ..lol!! me too..

  • The music is lovely--like Mannheim Steamroller or something! They must have liked the Renaissance sounding music. =)

  • The Renaissance music for this clip and the Fairy Alphabet is done by Carla Piper, who has a background in education and music.

  • Still just as weird and peculiar as I remember this one...

  • Amen. Exactly.

  • I'm curious to know who provide the voices in this sketch.

  • The artist of this one is actually Jeff Hale.

  • A collaboration? I thought I saw this mentioned in an obituary for Lamb.

  • I doubt it, though Hale did collaborate with Derek Lamb on a short called "The Last Cartoon Man."

  • the animation seems to borrow from the beatles yellow submarine

  • I love the subtle backwards violin (?) loop sound right after Simon says something is wrong somewhere. Anyone know what the term for that effect is, and where it's been used elsewhere (I know a few Beatles songs used backwards guitar loops, but besides that)?

  • I'm finding that these vintage S.Street clips really influenced my interest in 'other' forms of music as a kid in the 70's.

Particularly this short, the Raga-esque counting to 20 piece, ( 4 armed yogi one) and the orange singing an aria from Carmen.

All 3 I had taped (amongst others, which I'd still love to find) with a hand held mike on a casette recorder off the T.V. and played over and over.

  • "Eet was too good to lasst". Another phrase I've carried with me for 37 years. Thanks, OP!

  • Okay okay okay! The snake's voice is suppose to be an imitation of the actor Peter Lorre's voice; Lorre was a classic Hollywood villain, and yes, he played Igor-type characters.

The snake's laugh is the trademark Lorre-style laugh; Warner Brothers made cartoon characters based on him too.

  • Something is stiil wrong shhep do not have human feet. Simple simon can i have a look at you?

  • Did the duck know there is such thing as a flightless streamer duck?

  • The duc sounds mad at the snake. Did the snake know in Asia there is a gliding snake? They can't fly up, But the can glide in the air.

  • There is such thing as a flying snkae, However, They do not have wings, so they can't fly up. But they can glide in the air.

  • i never heard of such a snake! interesting nonetheless

  • Anybody remember Gryphon? They were this band from the 70's that played music just like the one in this clip. My dad was a fan of them, and this music always made him think of them.

  • That music is very trippy lol.BTW,that Snake sounds like Ren from The Ren and Stimpy Show.

  • A classic. Beautifully rendered drawings, and gotta love the Jethro-Tull-esque medieval-style flute music!

  • smart ass sheep trying to mess with the system, no boots for you!

  • What really makes this is the flamboyant way he says boots.

  • That duck is too anal

  • Hee hee, Fixman88, exactly what I came in here to say!

"And Quetzalcoatl swooped down upon the duck, his voice booming forth, "Y'all got SERVED by the Lord of the DawnStar!"

And thus with a swish of his gossamer wings, the soul of the duck was chained in torment for all eternity.

Or something like that...that particular scenario may have been a bit too intense for kids back then, call me crazy! ;)

  • the snake sounded like "IGOR" of frankenstein.

  • Poor snake! "It was too good to last..."

  • Wow, I remember this...awesome!!

  • trippy,very yellow submariney

  • what type of music is it? A different version of Greensleeve? Just curious. I hope to get the music soundtrack.

  • Hey, Ren..where's Stimpy? lol

  • Yeah, the drawing style and animation is freaky and creepy at the same time. Most 70s and early 80s animated shorts are disturbing. Look at Simon's face.. kinda eerie. What's up with those ugly ass feet on the sheep.. like Goofy had human feet and Pluto had regular dog's feet, yet their BOTH dogs. Weird.

  • FREAKY but neat at the same time SOME THING IS WRONG!!!

  • I REMEMBER THIS! I loved the snake and felt bad for him at the end. "Sheep don't wear boots!" lol.

  • Ah, the memories...love it, just love it. What lovely music, voices, and animation -- it takes me back thirty years!

  • That snake was Quetzalcoatl for a minute there... ;)

  • Good observation! (Never thought of that!)

  • YOU GOT TOLD SHEEP! get out of those boots! hang your head in shame!

  • The Snake sounds like Ren Hoek because it was supposed to sound like actor Peter Lorrey..who is also the one John K based Ren's voice on.

Peter was also spoofed a lot in old Looney Tunes episodes, due to his tell tale voice and the creepy roles he was often cast in.

  • the snake is a hoot.

  • damn i haven't seen this in the longest time i forgot about it the duck is so cool in this how he talks to the snake you got my wings

  • The music in this clip has been going through my head for over 25 years, and I thought all this time that it went with the "King Minus" sketch. Now I can sleep at night!

  • I don't know if any of you know of the home star runner page but doesn't that snake look like "Trogdor" the dragon? Just a thought.

  • When I was little I always thought the snake was a dragon for some reason. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that.

  • Only he's not burninating the thatch-roof cottageeeeeees!

  • that would be funny....like trogdor's long lost cousin or something....lol.

  • LOL! This brings back such memories.

  • Hahaha! I have not seen this in at least 30 years! But it makes me laugh just as much as it did when I was a child in the 1970's! The animals are a riot! That duck is so angry and indignant! The sheep is so mellow and the snake is so stoked about it all!

This is great! Whoopee! Yahoo! Hahahaha! indeed!

  • Sheep don't wear boots. They don't have human feet either.

  • that's what i said! lmao!!!

  • i used to love that snake.

  • "But this is great! Yahoo!! Whoopee!!"

    "Sheep don't wear boots!" LOL!!!!

A little freaky how the legs walk off the animal...

  • Is it just me, or does the snake kind of sound like Ren Hoek? I guess then it'd be Stimpy Simon.

  • Sesame Street is so quotable. I still say (in the snake voice) "It was too good to last..."

  • Really good, I remember this well.

  • ha ha- I remember this one now- I guess Simon was Simple for a reason! :-)

  • I don't blame the sheep for wearing boots....any of you ever been to a farm?

  • Whatta tool!

  • Creepy, creepy, creeeeeeeepy! But good to see after all these years!

  • Quite a classic!

  • Thanks for posting this! I never realized how funny that snake was! I also can't help but think that I've heard the music cue somewhere else...
