Fantastic video, I wish I'd watched this before cleaning my bearings with gasoline, have a killer headache now because of that stupidity. Is tri flow an acceptable lubricant ? Subscribed too by the way.
@game4life12 Yeah you're right acetone can do a good job. You also didn't notice that Bones' website also says, "Solvents we recommend are Acetone, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Citrus cleaner, and Denatured alcohol." Did you see citrus cleaner in there? MEK is no longer sold in the USA, and everything else is a dangerous chemical that I don't recommend kids using. Citrus cleaners work perfectly and are very safe for a kid at almost any age to use. Most are so safe that a child could drink it.
@enzeve809687 I like the Oust kit because it's smaller, and comes with cleaner. I made the exact same thing bones sells and for less than what they're kit costs.
@skateboardtech so I'm a long time listener first time caller :), I wanted to know what you think about different greases for lubricants, the other day I used Royal Purple UPG (Ultra Performance Grease) hell I mean if it it's good enough for the china star bullet train, it's good enough for my bearings then right? Or left?
@GEEderMexikaner I don't recommend grease because they are thick and once they get old the residue is extremely hard to get off. Bearings are a little bit smaller than a bullet train so require a thinner lubricant.
@DoondaGaga It's a lubricant. Use it if you want to. I am actually still working on my lubricant research and testing so I don't have an exact answer for you about tri-flow.
I think it has a little bit of water in it, but I am not completely sure.
@TylerM4197 Be sure to use top shelf vodka. Only the highest quality, triple distilled vodkas work the best. That's about $30 for a good vodka that will clean bearings good. LOL I'm kidding. You need new friends. Why use vodka when you can use rubbing alcohol? Vodka is only 40%. It won't clean your bearings. Water will work just as good. Use 90% alcohol.
This is a truly excellent tutorial--and uncommon of YouTube skateboard tutorials. The information is well-presented, seems very well researched, and also unbiased. Thank you for the work you put into this.
@MegaGraffitiFreak Putting bearings in a wheel can be tough to do. I have a video on how to do this. Go to my Channel to find it by clicking on on Skateboardtech. Wheels actually shrink slighting when curing. So the urethane and tool/mold have an effect on the size of the bearing seat in the wheel.
@skateboardtech ok i got them in my wheel thanks to you but i've seen videos where new bearings spin like 50 seconds (bones reds) mine spin online 20 seconds and there new
There now broken in and still they spin only for 30 seconds do i need to clean them or pur oil or something
@MegaGraffitiFreak I need to do a video on this. Spinning wheels doesn't indicate anything about bearings. How can u tell that u are spinning them with exactly the same force every time? You can't. Spin tests don't prove anything becuz loads have to be applied for a bearing to work. You can take those same bearings and stick them in a bigger wheel and watch them spin longer. When comparing bearings there r different amounts of lubricants, thicknesses, molecular structure, and ingredients.
@skateboardtech yeah i abbreviated turpentine.. :s hahah bad speller i am! :P its the shit you use to clean out like the canister of a spray gun so you dont get the new paint contaminated and what not.
@mrphotographyperson If you have experience working with it I would say go ahead and use it. But it's such a harsh solvent that it's unnecessary to use it for bearings. If you do use be sure to spin the bearings when drying them. Turpentine can cause rust if left behind.
@johnyboypotter97 I don't do anal, but from what I have heard you need a lot of it. For bearings use Astroglide instead. And wear protection. Personal lubricants are completely different.
If one bearing is rusted, and won't spin, would it be worth cleaning? Or should i just buy new bearings? I had just gotten these, so they're not damaged, just rusted.
I got a Bones cleaning unit Free with my Bones Reds bearings that I bought 3 & 1/2 years ago. I've been using the same bearings on my cruiser for the last 3 years, and I clean and oil my bearings after about a month's worth of use and they spin perfectly. They are louder than they were but they roll fine and for a long time. I clean my bearings almost exactly how you do, except I don't use water to rinse them. I just use Q-tips to get all the cleaner off and dry them, then I lube 'em up and roll

@cr3w562 You obviously didn't do a price check on everything. To make that entire kit was less than $5 bucks. The cleaner is $3-4 bucks. So that's pretty cheap isn't it? Shacking lose bearings in a bottle doesn't provide enough force for the cleaner to move through the bearings.
@skateboardtech i know, but mini logos are damn good bearings. their the best ones i've ridden so far. of course that's all personal opinion, but i've had redz and sunrise 2. i think their just as good and they keep longer cuz of the metal shields
you're probably sick as hell of answering these questions, but whats wrong with hardwood floor cleaner? it has lauramidopropyldimethylamine oxide in it, which is also a natural, orange oil hydrocarbon that from the looks of the molecule has excellent hydrogen bonding capabilities. Otherwise, i think i'll be using 70 percent isopropal alcohol, because i'm not four years old. Also, from personal experience, the most difficult part of the process is not screwing up a shield.
@dhwithspeezy Wood polishes or cleaners are different than a typical orange oil degreaser/cleaner. There are usually unnecessary additives in wood cleaners that may do more harm than good. You'll get much better results with a 90%+ alcohol. If you have difficulty with the screwing up the shield, watch the video on removing them.
hey, very nice vids you are calm and explain everythingf thorogly!ok so just remove the shield with the bearing brand and name dont remove the nylon ball cage
@toofaraway987 Yes they all contain water, even rubbing alcohol does, and even some lubricants. Don't be scared of water. Just don't let your bearings soak in the cleaner. You're still going to rinse the cleaner off with hot water too. When you dry the bearings with a hair drier be sure to spin them. This will remove any small traces of water between the balls and rings.
@toofaraway987 I can't recommend one or a few brands because not every brand is available in different regions of the US or in other countries. An all-purpose citrus cleaner is what you want to first look for, then check out if it says it contains orange oil. Avoid citrus scents, wood cleaners or polishers, lemon scents, etc. Just a watery like cleaner that has orange oil is what you want.
Hey skatetech, I've used 90% alcohol rather than natural citrus cleaner and they still roll great after drying and lubing em. Do you think this is safe for the bearings?
@vaderdemon It's not a lubricant. It does not protect bearings, evaporates quickly, is not a lubricant, and it's a cleaner. Most of all it causes rust. If it works for you and you like it keep using it. You must be replacing your bearings often, and not getting the most functionality out of them.
@skateboardtech Holy Crap are you serious?!?! That means that I've been duped this WHOLE time!! since i can remember , I've been told that wd 40 was a lubricant! Thanks man. Really saved my ass. got some proper lube and now they roll SOOO MUCH BETTER!
@vaderdemon It's not a lubricant. It does not protect bearings, evaporates quickly, is not a lubricant, and it's a cleaner. Most of all it causes rust. If it works for you and you like it keep using it. You must be replacing your bearings often, and not getting the most functionality out of them.
i have some bearings from an old skateboard that my parents got for me when i was a little kid. The bearings themselves seem to be in decent condition, but there is this brown gunk in them that refuses to come out with conventional cleaning. Do you know of any methods that could get this out?
@skateboardtech conventional as in the one you used in your vid. i actaully got out most of it with a small brush, but i was wondering if you knew how to get ALL of the crap out of the bearings.
I've been skating for 2 years.. Used a ton of remedies and solutions to try to clean and lubricate bearings. I've come to the conclusion that with street skating, even after cleaning your bearings, they get dirty as all hell in a matter of 2 days with lube. The lube tends to break my bearings because it reduces the friction the ball bearings have and the balls just fall out....I leave it unlubed with two shields on.. keeps the grim out, leaves the bearings dry. 30mph?
@skateboardtech Lubricant is used to reduce the friction between the balls and the raceways.. Nobody notices the difference between lubed and dry doing 10mph down the street..
I use some type of transmission oil to lube my bearings...thing is the bearings I got have pressed shields so I lube em the way my dad taught me. It works fine actually
@axeboy78 Yes its OK to use it. Most oils for machines (bearings are machines) do contain petroleum distillates. You are using it very small quantities (1-2 drops per bearing) and it's inside a bearing in your wheel. Just avoid getting it on your hands and don't lick your bearings to clean them. You have to use your hands to clean bearings so you're more to be exposed to harmful stuff like petroleum distillates.
@JayzBeerz Now why would Bones say that? Could be that there are better cleaning kits out there and they want to use their reputation to get people not to use their competitors kits.
@JayzBeerz Here is actually what it says in a Bones Reds Instructions. I was actually surprised it said this. They must have changed things, and you may have an old copy.... "2.) Clean your bearings with as environmentally-friendly of a solvent as you can obtain. There are citrus based cleaners, which are recommended, that can adequately clean the dirt and oil out of your bearings." Who do you want to argue with now? I don't doubt that u may have something that says to avoid it. It may be old.
@skateboardtech Maybe I got an old set of bones reds bearings. I ordered them from Amazon. It stated "Citrus based cleaners work but can leave a slight oily residue on the bearing." Either way they recommended IPA and that is what I use. But I did pick up some citrus cleaner from watching your video.
@JayzBeerz Here is what they say about Cleaners on their site. "Citrus-based cleaners work but can leave a slight oily residue on the bearing. Solvents are more dangerous to use, but often provide a more superior solution to cleaning dirty bearings." And they also say, "Solvents we recommend are Acetone, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Citrus cleaner, and Denatured alcohol." Did you see Citrus cleaner there? I washed the cleaner off in hot water and quickly dry them with a hair drier. Perfectly clean.
How come the Bones Cleaner Instruction Manual say that they find it best to use Acetone? Also, wouldn't heating the bearings up cause it to expand overall and possibly alter the shape of the balls and the shell itself even after its been cooled down? I'm confused ! I cleaned my bearings before with bones lubes, and as your video said, the lube were THICK ! Why would bones sell such oil, given that they are a world class bearings manufacturer???
@MrRambee Yes Bones does recommend acetone. I am not sure why they want to tell kids to use such a dangerous chemical. As a parent I would be pissed off to find my kid using acetone for anything. Acetone does work tho. I am not sure if "world class bearing manufacturer" is the right choice of words for Bones. Maybe world famous is better. Bones doesn't sell the best bearings or lube. There is better out there. It takes a tremendous amount of heat to change the shape. Hot water is not even close.
@skateboardtech Cool thanks ! that was very helpful ! I wish I had watched your video before I cleaned my bearings. Now they wont spin smoothly, one of them even gets stuck when i spin it; is this an indication that they are beyond repair? i've only had them for 6 months, the bones 6 balls.
@MrRambee Yes it's time to replace the bearings that don't spin. Also the Swiss 6 bearings don't work the way they were intended. They used 6 to try and reduce friction, but what happened is they increase the amount of loads put on the balls, which slows the bearings down. Basically it's a gimmick that people buy into. The skate industry is full of gimmicks that I will be exposing.
@MrRambee Oust bearings truly are the only bearings specifically designed for skating. They were designed to handle axial and torsional loads. I explain all about loads in 2 amazing videos that I will be posting later today. These will explain everything about what makes a bearing great.
@someonething145 NOOO WD-40 is not a lubricant and not intended to be a lubricant. It has very little light lubricants to aid in unlocking stuck parts.
@Exoime Acetone does a good job. You have to realize the average age of skaters. Acetone is very dangerous and no kid should be messing with it to clean his bearings. Citrus cleaners work great. Citrus cleaner is also provided in some cleaning kits. Call up Oust Bearings and tell them they are an idiot too. Baby farts are better than a fairy any day too.
@Deltitroid I can't really say yes, but from what you have told me it seems like it will work. I don't think it will hurt your bearings. Don't be upset if it doesn't do a good job because it may not be nearly as good as orange cleaner.
@flyingpig74 So many people think the hissing sound is good. It's not. So much BS is passed around in skating. I am basically the myth buster for skateboarding.
@Deltitroid That all depends on the type of product it is. Lemon oils are found more in wood furniture products. Wood polishing and wood cleaning products are completely different from orange degreaser/cleaning products. Lemon oils do contain terpenes, so they can work. They're not as effective as orange cleaners, but if you have the right kind of cleaning product, lemon oil will work.
@TY3nonaT Yes, everything applies to longboarding. Longboard bearings are the same. Everything is pretty much the same stuff just different designs and shapes.
@yamaha212121 I love the name of this stuff LOL! HA HA. Yes it will work perfectly. Some of their products are concentrated and need to be diluted. I don't know what you have. You could probably use it without diluting it. Take the seal off.
@megatron2015 Why do you want to use those? I didn't recommend them in the video. They aren't necessary. It's like brushing your teeth with a fire hose. It'll clean the hell out of your teeth, but there are safer ways that will do the job great. Same goes for cleaning bearings. There is no need to resort to dangerous and hazardous solvents like mineral spirits when citrus cleaner works great and is all you need. You can get the Oust kit at Daddiesboardshop(dot)com for $10 bucks.
i rusted my bearings by cleaning it with water and then a blow dryer not knowing it will rust, then when i figured out it rusted i put wd 40. it made it better but when i ride it, it seems a little restricting when i ride it and feels weird. if u think u can help me make it normal again please tell me, Thanks and please reply.

@MegaYoshi00 No. Unless it contains citrus terpenes.

Is it okay if there is water in the cleaner as a main ingredient?
toofaraway987 3 weeks ago
@toofaraway987 Yes they all contain water, even rubbing alcohol does, and even some lubricants. Don't be scared of water. Just don't let your bearings soak in the cleaner. You're still going to rinse the cleaner off with hot water too. When you dry the bearings with a hair drier be sure to spin them. This will remove any small traces of water between the balls and rings.
skateboardtech 3 weeks ago
What specific product would you reccomend like brand wise that you could get from a grocery store?
toofaraway987 3 weeks ago
@toofaraway987 I can't recommend one or a few brands because not every brand is available in different regions of the US or in other countries. An all-purpose citrus cleaner is what you want to first look for, then check out if it says it contains orange oil. Avoid citrus scents, wood cleaners or polishers, lemon scents, etc. Just a watery like cleaner that has orange oil is what you want.

Is Tuf-glide good for bearings
Jose11blue 3 weeks ago
@Jose11blue This is a dry lubricant. Dry lubricants work with static electricity, which bearings do not have.
skateboardtech 3 weeks ago
Hey skatetech, I've used 90% alcohol rather than natural citrus cleaner and they still roll great after drying and lubing em. Do you think this is safe for the bearings?
TheSnailsHere 4 weeks ago
@TheSnailsHere Yes this is fine. It may or may not work as good as citrus cleaner, but 90% is ok.
skateboardtech 4 weeks ago
@skateboardtech I have a question. I bought Mr.Clean Multi-Purpose Cleaner, the summer citrus one. Would this work for cleaning bearings

I have a 100% natural citrus oil air freshener will this work?
toofaraway987 4 weeks ago
@toofaraway987 It's an air freshener not a cleaner

ive been using wd 40 for a while now. seems to work fine for me. why wouldnt you recommend using wd 40?
vaderdemon 4 weeks ago
@vaderdemon It's not a lubricant. It does not protect bearings, evaporates quickly, is not a lubricant, and it's a cleaner. Most of all it causes rust. If it works for you and you like it keep using it. You must be replacing your bearings often, and not getting the most functionality out of them.
skateboardtech 4 weeks ago
@skateboardtech Holy Crap are you serious?!?! That means that I've been duped this WHOLE time!! since i can remember , I've been told that wd 40 was a lubricant! Thanks man. Really saved my ass. got some proper lube and now they roll SOOO MUCH BETTER!

i have some bearings from an old skateboard that my parents got for me when i was a little kid. The bearings themselves seem to be in decent condition, but there is this brown gunk in them that refuses to come out with conventional cleaning. Do you know of any methods that could get this out?
csaw12 4 weeks ago
@csaw12 What is your idea of "conventional [bearing] cleaning"? I know of a method that might help and it's in the video.
skateboardtech 4 weeks ago
@skateboardtech conventional as in the one you used in your vid. i actaully got out most of it with a small brush, but i was wondering if you knew how to get ALL of the crap out of the bearings.
csaw12 4 weeks ago
@csaw12 Your bearings may be corroded. If it's brown, it's rust. If cleaning didn't work then it's time to replace your bearings.

30mph?
Longi452 1 month ago
@Longi452 You have a lot to learn about lubricants, their purpose, and what they are for.
skateboardtech 4 weeks ago
@skateboardtech Lubricant is used to reduce the friction between the balls and the raceways.. Nobody notices the difference between lubed and dry doing 10mph down the street..
Longi452 4 weeks ago
I use some type of transmission oil to lube my bearings...thing is the bearings I got have pressed shields so I lube em the way my dad taught me. It works fine actually

@skateboardtech that sewing oil that is the tallest contains petrolem distillates because i have it
axeboy78 2 weeks ago
@axeboy78 Yes its OK to use it. Most oils for machines (bearings are machines) do contain petroleum distillates. You are using it very small quantities (1-2 drops per bearing) and it's inside a bearing in your wheel. Just avoid getting it on your hands and don't lick your bearings to clean them. You have to use your hands to clean bearings so you're more to be exposed to harmful stuff like petroleum distillates.
skateboardtech 2 weeks ago
@skateboardtech is it still safe

Read the bones owners manual they say to stay away from citrus cleaners and to use alcohol.
JayzBeerz 1 month ago
@JayzBeerz Now why would Bones say that? Could be that there are better cleaning kits out there and they want to use their reputation to get people not to use their competitors kits.
skateboardtech 1 month ago
@skateboardtech Have you read the cleaning instructions in a bones reds pack of bearings? It says it clearly in black and white.
JayzBeerz 1 month ago
@JayzBeerz Here is actually what it says in a Bones Reds Instructions. I was actually surprised it said this. They must have changed things, and you may have an old copy.... "2.) Clean your bearings with as environmentally-friendly of a solvent as you can obtain. There are citrus based cleaners, which are recommended, that can adequately clean the dirt and oil out of your bearings." Who do you want to argue with now? I don't doubt that u may have something that says to avoid it. It may be old.
skateboardtech 1 month ago
@skateboardtech Maybe I got an old set of bones reds bearings. I ordered them from Amazon. It stated "Citrus based cleaners work but can leave a slight oily residue on the bearing." Either way they recommended IPA and that is what I use. But I did pick up some citrus cleaner from watching your video.
JayzBeerz 1 month ago

MrRambee 1 month ago
@MrRambee Yes Bones does recommend acetone. I am not sure why they want to tell kids to use such a dangerous chemical. As a parent I would be pissed off to find my kid using acetone for anything. Acetone does work tho. I am not sure if "world class bearing manufacturer" is the right choice of words for Bones. Maybe world famous is better. Bones doesn't sell the best bearings or lube. There is better out there. It takes a tremendous amount of heat to change the shape. Hot water is not even close.
skateboardtech 1 month ago
@skateboardtech Cool thanks ! that was very helpful ! I wish I had watched your video before I cleaned my bearings. Now they wont spin smoothly, one of them even gets stuck when i spin it; is this an indication that they are beyond repair? i've only had them for 6 months, the bones 6 balls.
MrRambee 1 month ago
@MrRambee Yes it's time to replace the bearings that don't spin. Also the Swiss 6 bearings don't work the way they were intended. They used 6 to try and reduce friction, but what happened is they increase the amount of loads put on the balls, which slows the bearings down. Basically it's a gimmick that people buy into. The skate industry is full of gimmicks that I will be exposing.

@skateboardtech
oh man.. there go my 60 dollars. What bearings would you recommend ?
MrRambee 4 weeks ago
@MrRambee Oust bearings truly are the only bearings specifically designed for skating. They were designed to handle axial and torsional loads. I explain all about loads in 2 amazing videos that I will be posting later today. These will explain everything about what makes a bearing great.

@rosstifarian100 I'm not sure what Cif cleaner you have. If it's not a citrus cleaner than no don't use it.
skateboardtech 1 month ago
for bearings acetone is the best one this kid thinks Fairy cleans beter...after you finish with acetone put 1 drop of oil...
Exoime 1 month ago
@Exoime Acetone does a good job. You have to realize the average age of skaters. Acetone is very dangerous and no kid should be messing with it to clean his bearings. Citrus cleaners work great. Citrus cleaner is also provided in some cleaning kits. Call up Oust Bearings and tell them they are an idiot too. Baby farts are better than a fairy any day too.

It is to clean kitchen. So is it okey?
Deltitroid 1 month ago
@Deltitroid I can't really say yes, but from what you have told me it seems like it will work. I don't think it will hurt your bearings. Don't be upset if it doesn't do a good job because it may not be nearly as good as orange cleaner.
skateboardtech 1 month ago
oh i thought the hissing sound was good
flyingpig74 1 month ago
@flyingpig74 So many people think the hissing sound is good. It's not. So much BS is passed around in skating. I am basically the myth buster for skateboarding.

@skateboardtech thanks dude my bearings are starting to slow down a ton so i ordered some southstar lube from amazon
flyingpig74 1 month ago
Can the orange oil be replaced wit lemon oil instead.Cause i live in Singapore n i cant find orange oil ones.
Deltitroid 1 month ago
@Deltitroid That all depends on the type of product it is. Lemon oils are found more in wood furniture products. Wood polishing and wood cleaning products are completely different from orange degreaser/cleaning products. Lemon oils do contain terpenes, so they can work. They're not as effective as orange cleaners, but if you have the right kind of cleaning product, lemon oil will work.

Can you use mineral spirites(paint thinner) on bearings?
Where can i buy the oust bearing kit online the cheapest?
megatron2015 1 month ago
@megatron2015 Why do you want to use those? I didn't recommend them in the video. They aren't necessary. It's like brushing your teeth with a fire hose. It'll clean the hell out of your teeth, but there are safer ways that will do the job great. Same goes for cleaning bearings. There is no need to resort to dangerous and hazardous solvents like mineral spirits when citrus cleaner works great and is all you need. You can get the Oust kit at Daddiesboardshop(dot)com for $10 bucks.
