Oh, the memories! I remembered that show when it aired on KDAF-TV WB 33 (now known as The CW 33) in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Walt Disney Company now owns the 'Eagle Rider', even though Haim Saban bought the 'Power Rangers', the 'VR Troopers', the 'Masked Rider' and the 'Beetleborgs' back from Disney. Thanks for posting!
I have NEVER forgiven Saban for destroying Gatchaman and its SUPERIOR American version (only because I've never seen G-Force) Battle of the Planets. I saw one episode, and it broke my heart, mostly because of the TITLE!
@SuperAdventures I think that G-force was a bit more familiar with a large group, so then airing this over censored, name changed show with a miscellaneous title on at 6 am wouldn't catch much attention. Just the title of it makes it sound stupid.
@MSFproductionsMAIN That's what I always wondered. I remember seeing this in like 1996-1997, after seeing G-Force on Cartoon Network and thinking "Wasn't this called G-Force not that long ago?"
@XeonogaShanti9 Care to upload any eps you have to YT? :) English ER eps are perhaps the most difficult to come by of all the English Gatchaman adaptations, because it only aired in the U.S for 3-4 months, and never again.
The wierd thing is that Gatchaman had undergone SO many name changes throughout the years American fans have known the anime. In the 80s it was called G-Force, then in the 90s it was called Eagle Riders. If you ask me, all this name changing just makes things too confusing. I say they should have just stick with the original names.
@MDthornton83 yeah they dint do that with other anime i mean they dint change the name like 3 times to suit the decade with any other shows so why did they do it with gatchaman
Good question. Take Voltron for instance; in Japan, it's called "Golion" and like many other anime shows known at the time, it had undergone name changes. But this happened only once with Golion, or Voltron as it's called in America. Plus, American fans have known the characters by their US names for years now. And if you ask me, once is enough when it comes to renaming characters.
Well at least with Eagle Riders , since it was dubbed bySaban I'm pretty sure they couldn't have use the BOTP or G-Force names. Anyway this was a show adapted from the sequel where both BOTP and G Force were adapted from the original and I think by the same company so that's more confusing IMO
hm eagle riders they must of used the theme kinda on mask rider openig.... u kno it goes like mask rider mask rider this show starts off like eagle riders eagle riders
@PrzemekDjcz It's vaulted. Apart from Power Rangers, which has now been sold back to Saban, almost all of Saban's back catalogue will never be broadcast again.
I remember watching this show before the offficial Fox Kids line up started at 7am.Shows like this dominated the 6am hour slot to get you ready for the "big names".Love this show, but prefer the japanese version
Among other reasons (they were big into translating older Tatsunoko shows back in the 90's) Gatchaman was very similar to something else they were flooding the market with and profiting greatly from. Take a wild guess what.
I've always thought it stood for guardians of space since I watched G-Force first and because the ship destroyed I thought this was a continuity of the G-Force built from the ashes of the previous organization.
Since it din't have anything to do it could probably reverence as goverment protectors rememeber back in the day all cartoons had the logos of their teams in belt watches and shirts.
@BurnRoddy Well, I'm sure they didn't go out of their way to explain the "G" in Eagle Riders. The fact that two drastically different English adaptations of the prequel series had already been out (with "G-Force" still airing on Cartoon Network on weekends when ER premiered) doomed this series from the start...many were already confused and infuriated with the changes between BotP and G-Force.
I may not be a big Gatchaman fan, but I do respect all 60-90's cartoons! And dispite the severe changes that were done to Gatchaman 2 and F, Eagle Riders is still better then at least BOTP(Star Wars all over again!!)! I dispise companies like 4Kids but this show had managed to keep some of the original dialog, action, fighting, mystery and especially it's story. And I will say that even in my country's translation I still liked the series.
It would have suck balls, 4Kids are political correct freaks with no undersatanding of anime what so ever! Although the Gatchaman series has the animation movement of Hanah and Barbera cartoons, it was filled with death, destruction and genetic freaks such as Berg Katse. Every inch of the show would have been completely changed and turned into a retard-kiddie show with no good jokes and horrible voice acting.
I doubt 4KIDS would release anything unedited to TV, especially Gatchaman. Not just because of the content, but because of its age. Gatch and its sequels are already 30+ years old. The heyday for Gatchaman in the U.S was in the late '70's-mid 1980's, when "Battle of the Planets" was airing. When "G-Force" was brought in by CN to cash in on the success of Power Rangers in '95, it mostly bombed, partly because it was old. ADV's uncut Gatchaman release didn't sell too hot, again, because of its age
Eagle R flunked because it was a more humane version of Gatchman, bassed more on the characters than the actual Gatchman plot not because it was old.
GForce was better in every aspect except for the intro, it kicked ass back in the day because it kept the giant robots plot and fights intact.
In other words I think Saban were trying to do the same they did with Sentai, however PR were mundane but this was way more serious, it needed that extra action, so it failed.
What was the point of calling this Eagle Riders when America already had called it Battle of the Planets and G-Force? But nonetheless if wasn't for this show i wouldn't had been a fan of Gatchaman.
Because in Japan it is call Gatchaman II and later with a third series as Gatchaman F but half of Gatchaman F was shown in the US while Gatchaman II was shown completely.
Episodes were mixed-and-matched from both series. A majority of the Gatch II episodes were adapted, while a few Gatch Fighter episodes were adapted. Needless to say, "Eagle Riders" was a disaster that only serves as a curiosity.
True even though one of the animes that Tatsunoko made which is remade in 2008 called Yatterman never came to the US unless you count the Time Bokan OVA but Gatchaman and Yatterman came out to the US again they should not fall into the dark and evil hands of 4KIDS.
Actually in 1984, Jim Terry productions (producers of Force Five) took parts of the original Time Bokan show (Not Yatterman--that was the 2nd show) and edited it for the home video market and called it "Timefighters in the Land of Fantasy."
I check on that and it turns out their were 2 Time Bokan OVAs Timefighters was the name of the english dub of the series while Timefighters in the Land of Fantasy was the first Time Bokan OVA before the second one that had all the Time Bokan Villains.
Because, like Turner before it did with "G-Force", they wanted to set it apart from the previous English translations and try to push it as a whole-new show with new name, new music, new character names.....except all it did was cause MORE confusion. Don't worry about "Eagle Riders" though, it was only shown in the U.S for a VERY short while and most likely will NEVER be seen again on airwaves. It's the "black sheep" of the Gatchaman family.
All the stuff I've posted up so far is what I've been remotely interested in as far as Tatsunoko goes. I used to have the (Italian language) pilot episodes of Casshern, Polymar and Tekkaman (the original '70's incarnations) up ages ago, but the Polymar and Tekkaman ones were pulled due to copyright claims from Media Blasters, and I pulled the Casshern one because I didn't want to risk myself. "G-Force" is safe though, its currently in copyright limbo.
And just in case anyone has/is asking, no, I don't have any "Eagle Riders" eps. Very difficult series to even get a few episodes ahold of.......it sucks immenselyy so its better if no one burns their eyes seeing it! Just enjoy the catchy intro and no more!
"Joe" is a common American/Japanese name, I wouldn't think so much of it.....its amongst the VERY few, if any, things retained from the Japanese Gatchaman II & Fighter.
I think its a toss-up as to which was the worst English adaptation of a Gatchaman property: "Battle of the Planets" or "Eagle Riders". The former often cut out huge chunks of the original JPN episodes and substituted it with crappy American sequences, the latter often merged several JPN episodes into one American episode!
In all fairness. The dub of Eagle riders was better just because of the voices. I never really liked the ones in Battle of the planets and they sounded really bad in my opinion
all they tried to do was repaint over the original stuff which was Battle of the planets in Japan and G-force here in the staes from the early 80's which was done poorley I might add at least the earlier versions were more true to the original source material
The thing about this was that Saban was a huge fan of Gatchman/Battle Of the Planets/G-Force. In fact, the reason the Power Rangers concept was brought up was due to the sentai Jetman having a similar premise to Gatchaman and the first season of Power Rangers was to have used Jetman footage, but it was later decided to use Zyuranger footage and the rest is history.
They re-made all the original Gatchaman eps... well re-dubbed more like it. far as I can tell unedited and dubbed in English as close to the original scripts, as far as I can tell since I don't speak japanese. And packed them in collector's boxes with Alex Ross art. Far as I know they're still highly obtainable.
Your so right man Americanized anime is crap some turn out ok but most of it is trash. Its heavily watered down or edited and turned into a kids show. A lot of anime fans don't like that which is exactly the reason why they don't buy it they download the original version with subs instead.
The folks at Saban most likely did not think about that when re-badging the Gatchaman series with yet another set of Americanized names and terms. There's plenty of reasons as to why this is the most obscure and least-seen English adaptation of a Gatchaman show out there.....it friggin' sucks!
Actually it was originally called Gatchaman in Japan. In the late 70's early 80's it came to the States as Battle of the Planets. Ted Turner did it as G-Gorce Guardians of Space. Gatchaman was and possibly still is very big in Japan. I myself loved it growing up. A couple of years ago I got all 105 episodes of Gatchaman. It is better than Battle of the Planets, because it isn't highly edited. If you liked Battle get Gatchaman.
This show is actually called G-force. Battlestar something.
I loved it in the 70's. Watched all the time growing up. This only thing is i have children now and they just change the name and some of the character's a little.
Like power ranger's and stuff. But they are alway's a red,blue.yellow.and black or white.
Well thank's for reading. But i miss watching the VR TROOPER'S.
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman...do some research ....this chop shop TV show is almost as bad as "Starblazers"(which were chopped movies). Also to you people quoting dates ; All of your Eagle Rider/G-Force originates from the 70s and the first incarnation was aired in the 70s so ...GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT b4 you post .
First of all,Walt'sdead, Roy has very little power over the corporation, and this may not be aird or released possibly because the current rights to the original Gatchaman are currentily with ADV Films, well as far as I know they were the last ones to have the rights over the show. It may not mean know that this dub won't ever be released, the rights might still be under Disney, but only for this dub of Gatchaman.
First off I was talking about Disney ( the corporation not the person). Second ADV doesn't have the rights to this, they only have the rights of the original gatchaman, remember that Eagle Riders is made of the two sequels not the original.
Err you said 'HIS ASS' on your previous comment! Secondily yes I'm aware Saban has the rights to this (but not the other dubs) and there could be a distribution conflict. I don't know for sure, but it's a possibility!
Hmm yeah LOL but you know what I meant XD About the rights Disney should have them but then again I thought they had the teknoman dub too and another company ended up distributing the dvd's so who knows.
LOL! Disney actually can ask an independent distributor to release their DVD's, that's what's going on in the UK. A company called Maximum Entertainment is distributing their back catalog over here.
Well like Hasbro, Marvel have just brought back the rights to all their shows. So hopefully the US might have the Marvel shows re-released, as soon as they find a decent distributor. As for the others though, they are still under Disney ownership and them and DiC aren't exactily the best companies when it comes to distribution. Quite frankily they both suck....big time!
My God, Saban's Eagle riders was the worst hack job of Gatchaman ever! The song sucked and everything. Battle of the Planets, G-Force, or Eagle riders were all cut and pastes of Gatchaman no real new footage to speak of so for those of you who think they're a rip of Silverhawks think again, Gatchaman goes as far back as '72. So unless Flashback jumped the Silverhawks to the late 60's I'd think its a safe bet Gatchaman didn't copy them.
you're right there man, Eagle Riders were the worst Hackjob of it, at least BOTP and G-force stayed close to the source material, Eagle Riders took it WAY off kilter, yeah it wasn't a rip from Silverhawks, if anything; the creators of SH pulled some elements from this, I remember watchin' G-force in the early '80s and havin a puzzle you could put together of the main characters
Oh my gosh, I remember watching this, Beast Wars, Jewel Riders, and War Planets on Sunday mornings before church! :D That was great viewing! There was one more... it featured this team of heroes that road around on gliders...
They had a different name here in Argentina G Force and the music was different too. The same serie. It's good but seems a copy of Silverhawks, not saying this is bad!
This was my favorite American incarnation of the shows. I love the theme song and if you listen to the instrumental, it has some awesome guitar riffs.
By the time Eagle Riders came along, the franchise had "jumped the shark" and was grasping at straws with stories. They should have stopped at Gatchaman II.
The first series (1972) was originally called Science Ninja Team Gatchaman in Japan. When Sandy Frank Prod. first picked it up for the USA in the late '70s it was retitled Battle of the Planets. Sandy Frank Prod. and Turner then retooled it in the '80s as G-Force.
The second series, known both as Gatchaman II and later Gatchaman Fighter in Japan was picked up by Saban Ent. and retitled as Eagle Riders. I hope that clears things up.
Thank you for posting this! I always loved the Eagle Riders OP. The ED was even better...whoever was doing the guitars (I think it was Ron Wasserman) was goin for the gold on that track. Great upload, man!
Unfortunately I do remember this abobination. I saw the orignal non-edited Gatchaman in the early 1980s and this thing with all the editing, awful voice-overs and terrible lines was just a rip off of a classic anime.
THE SONG IS GREAT! But even better than this one is the closing credits which was the same song but with awesome electric guitars! WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
Oh, the memories! I remembered that show when it aired on KDAF-TV WB 33 (now known as The CW 33) in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Walt Disney Company now owns the 'Eagle Rider', even though Haim Saban bought the 'Power Rangers', the 'VR Troopers', the 'Masked Rider' and the 'Beetleborgs' back from Disney. Eagle Riders was also shown in Europe in the late 90's. I liked the show, thought it was awesome back then.

all they tried to do was repaint over the original stuff which was Battle of the planets in Japan and G-force here in the staes from the early 80's which was done poorley I might add at least the earlier versions were more true to the original source material

This has to hold the record for the most different dubs of any anime... I guess that shows it's an enduring classic...
tkayube 3 years ago 3
The thing about this was that Saban was a huge fan of Gatchman/Battle Of the Planets/G-Force. In fact, the reason the Power Rangers concept was brought up was due to the sentai Jetman having a similar premise to Gatchaman and the first season of Power Rangers was to have used Jetman footage, but it was later decided to use Zyuranger footage and the rest is history.

Screw you, Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman is a classic anime series.
AkabaneKuroudo 3 years ago
absolutely, no matter who gets the rights to it they can't outdo the original material Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman/G-force
quik876 2 years ago
But the ADV Films dub is the best of all the dubs.
AllieRX87 2 years ago
Actually they are "Gatchman".
The other names are inventions of local cartoon networks (like "Zodiac Knights" instead of "Saint Seiya")

I searched for the eps a long time, It's impossible to find :(
wellme22 3 years ago
As much as I like the theme for THIS VERSION of the series, I'm sure you're not likely to find it in this (American) format.
You're more likely to find it in it's original these days; Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman.
AkabaneKuroudo 3 years ago
They re-made all the original Gatchaman eps... well re-dubbed more like it. far as I can tell unedited and dubbed in English as close to the original scripts, as far as I can tell since I don't speak japanese. And packed them in collector's boxes with Alex Ross art. Far as I know they're still highly obtainable.
guyveromega27 2 years ago
Yeah but not in this format.
Lets say you were to buy the box set. You'd get dual audio but you won't get this opening or the G-Force version of the opening.
You'd get the original Japanese opening and ending.
Anime in AMERICANIZE format isn't very popular among anime fans despite whether they the the remade openings/endings or not.
AkabaneKuroudo 2 years ago
Your so right man Americanized anime is crap some turn out ok but most of it is trash. Its heavily watered down or edited and turned into a kids show. A lot of anime fans don't like that which is exactly the reason why they don't buy it they download the original version with subs instead.

GG sban fucked it all up!!!!
Neogetter02 3 years ago
Umm if they're not called "G-FORCE" in this version, then what does the "G" in their belts stand for?
TechnoHajikelist 3 years ago
The folks at Saban most likely did not think about that when re-badging the Gatchaman series with yet another set of Americanized names and terms. There's plenty of reasons as to why this is the most obscure and least-seen English adaptation of a Gatchaman show out there.....it friggin' sucks!
SuperAdventures 3 years ago
Actually it was originally called Gatchaman in Japan. In the late 70's early 80's it came to the States as Battle of the Planets. Ted Turner did it as G-Gorce Guardians of Space. Gatchaman was and possibly still is very big in Japan. I myself loved it growing up. A couple of years ago I got all 105 episodes of Gatchaman. It is better than Battle of the Planets, because it isn't highly edited. If you liked Battle get Gatchaman.
gatchfan 3 years ago

Simple. It's the Eagle Riders theme.

Man I wish Disney would get up his ass and aired this in Jetix.
damienreturns 3 years ago
First of all,Walt'sdead, Roy has very little power over the corporation, and this may not be aird or released possibly because the current rights to the original Gatchaman are currentily with ADV Films, well as far as I know they were the last ones to have the rights over the show. It may not mean know that this dub won't ever be released, the rights might still be under Disney, but only for this dub of Gatchaman.
David315842 3 years ago
First off I was talking about Disney ( the corporation not the person). Second ADV doesn't have the rights to this, they only have the rights of the original gatchaman, remember that Eagle Riders is made of the two sequels not the original.
damienreturns 3 years ago
Err you said 'HIS ASS' on your previous comment! Secondily yes I'm aware Saban has the rights to this (but not the other dubs) and there could be a distribution conflict. I don't know for sure, but it's a possibility!
David315842 3 years ago
Hmm yeah LOL but you know what I meant XD About the rights Disney should have them but then again I thought they had the teknoman dub too and another company ended up distributing the dvd's so who knows.
damienreturns 3 years ago
LOL! Disney actually can ask an independent distributor to release their DVD's, that's what's going on in the UK. A company called Maximum Entertainment is distributing their back catalog over here.
David315842 3 years ago
Wow you guys are lucky, I wish I could get a hold of some of their series like XMEN TAS, VR Troopers and such.
damienreturns 3 years ago
Well like Hasbro, Marvel have just brought back the rights to all their shows. So hopefully the US might have the Marvel shows re-released, as soon as they find a decent distributor. As for the others though, they are still under Disney ownership and them and DiC aren't exactily the best companies when it comes to distribution. Quite frankily they both suck....big time!
David315842 3 years ago
I miss this cartoon
LrdDarkFyre 3 years ago
My God, Saban's Eagle riders was the worst hack job of Gatchaman ever! The song sucked and everything. Battle of the Planets, G-Force, or Eagle riders were all cut and pastes of Gatchaman no real new footage to speak of so for those of you who think they're a rip of Silverhawks think again, Gatchaman goes as far back as '72. So unless Flashback jumped the Silverhawks to the late 60's I'd think its a safe bet Gatchaman didn't copy them.
guyveromega27 3 years ago 3
you're right there man, Eagle Riders were the worst Hackjob of it, at least BOTP and G-force stayed close to the source material, Eagle Riders took it WAY off kilter, yeah it wasn't a rip from Silverhawks, if anything; the creators of SH pulled some elements from this, I remember watchin' G-force in the early '80s and havin a puzzle you could put together of the main characters
quik876 2 years ago
well yeah the show came out in 1972 in japan only it wasnt released in the usa until the 80s.

By the time Eagle Riders came along, the franchise had "jumped the shark" and was grasping at straws with stories. They should have stopped at Gatchaman II.

Originally Gatchaman in Japan, but I grew up on Battle of the Planets.
TheScimitar33 4 years ago
The first series (1972) was originally called Science Ninja Team Gatchaman in Japan. When Sandy Frank Prod. first picked it up for the USA in the late '70s it was retitled Battle of the Planets. Sandy Frank Prod. and Turner then retooled it in the '80s as G-Force.
Shokara 4 years ago
The second series, known both as Gatchaman II and later Gatchaman Fighter in Japan was picked up by Saban Ent. and retitled as Eagle Riders. I hope that clears things up.

Gatchaman II and Gatchaman F are naturally inferior to the first Gatchaman show. And Eagle Riders makes them EVEN WORSE!
JackSzwergold 4 years ago
Eagle Riders actually improved Gatchaman II in a couple of places, but Gatchaman Fighter from what I've heard was a bit harder to adapt.
SpeaksTooSoon 4 years ago
Unfortunately I do remember this abobination. I saw the orignal non-edited Gatchaman in the early 1980s and this thing with all the editing, awful voice-overs and terrible lines was just a rip off of a classic anime.
