Why wouldn't this story be true? A friend of mine who's father grew up in Germany during WWII remembers his Mom making food with sawdust because there was nothing else to eat. Chinese people tend to be very secretive about their business practices, and it seemed unlikely that an unscrupulous vendor would demonstrate his fake bun ingredients to an inquisitive stranger. If it was true, why would the vendor reveal his secret? He has nothing to gain from it, and it would only jeopardize his business.
