  • You are really good at making examples... :)

  • How Should I practice sight reading once I Run out of sheet music? yeaahhh.....

  • What is the name if the piece in the introduction? Is it Chopin?

  • lol 480p doesnt have anti aliasing

  • Concision

  • So when people at rock concerts give that hand sign...are they reminding their heroes on stage to look ahead while sight reading? And how big are these girls jugs in the amazon? Are they amazonian? THEN you should buy the map. And if musicians do these clapping exercises, will they get the clap?

  • @thisisfunny88 I Didn't laugh until I Saw your username... XD

  • I am using these sight reading techniques to play music on accordion. The left hand is harder than piano. With various left hand chord combinations, it makes playing more difficult.

  • good info, but that guy is perfectly lame

  • this was really useful :) thanks!

  • Lypur, this is confusing. The virtuoso pianist Valentina Lisitsa told me that you should always play at full speed intended, but as you say, never stop and keep going. Even though you might miss 95% of the notes at first, she said.

Honestly I really relate to it as well. I used to play a lot of Guitar Hero, as beginner you were forced to just keep go even though you missed pretty much everything! Now I get maybe 90% notes first time playing a song and then improving next time :-)

  • get to the point..;

  • Your monotone voice has reminded me about Goth Lyfe :D Thank you! Now I know how to sightread AND I remembered about my favorite cartoon!

  • The key to your effectiveness is in the humor you interject into your lessons which helps to illustrate your points while at the same time producing a calming effect for the student which allows him/her to lower those defensive walls that everyone has around teachers.

  • Thanks very much, this was great! I have a Uni audition next week and have to prep my sight reading. I am OK but am going to spends lots of time over the week and hopefully it will play off!

  • thanks this was quite helpful! i absolutely suck at sight reading... :( this is really helping me though! and its entertaining me :D hahaha thanks for making sight reading fun!!!

  • "Do this with your hand" Rock on maaaaan lol

  • cool tutorial, thanks.

  • lol i love your explanations.. i love your humour

  • i always look at my feet when i walk otherwise they don't know how to move!

ahahahahahaha only joking! you are a great teacher!

  • I liked the map analogy. Thanks :)

  • thx man great lessons.

  • never go back... don't look down very much - got it.

  • where in canada do you live? i need lessonsssss

  • If you think you suck at sight reading and always will you have to realize you're human. Through doing this all the time you will eventually see the same combinations appearing over and over again. Your mind will adapt to combinations and make them one quick movement in your head. So where you used to see 3 notes in a rhythm and play them as 3 notes, you will start to see them as one phrase instead of 3 notes. It's adding those shortcuts together that makes things easier in music overall.

  • @immobile2005 your comment encouraged me.

  • Guitar hero is a good mental exercise for thinking ahead.. if you're an instructor you can actually trick kids into getting into reading music if they like guitar hero, you just have to draw the right parallels and make it fun. Basically if you turn sheet music sideways and slide it down, you have a non caveman version of guitar hero.

  • that hair! ;)

  • Thanks for all your "babble." It gives me some ideas for making my instruction on how to sight-read more interesting!

  • Whenever I make mistakes it messes me up and it's hard to keep going :(

  • I am applying all these techniques to playing accordion. One cannot look down while playing accordion especially with regards to the left hand.

  • but you weren't playing the piano tho!

  • very looooooooooooonnngg jungle storys :-)

  • For the android users, there is a cool application that you can download from the market. It's called Sight Read Music Quiz for Piano. It helps you a lot recognize the notes on the staff. Check it out....

  • god, you babble so much its distracting. but this video really helps.

  • oh well .... i like your hair :)

  • The pink ferarri

  • Thanks for making this video ^0^. I'm a flute player, not a piano player, but the strategy for this sight reading is much likely strategies for every instrument.

Since I'm in a concert band, I'm currently VERY horrible of sight reading. I know the fingerings and notes, but I just can't sight read.

So, I'll take your advice, practice everyday- And never look back :D Thanks so much ^^ ~*

  • Never?...

  • You have helped so much.thank you.

  • So i get the sight reading for the right hand is like guitar hero where you keep periferal vision on the following notes all the time. But how the hell do you look look in order to see the left hand as well????? please tell me

  • is "Practise" a Canadian word for "Practice" ??? LOL...

  • Yes because Canadian is a separate language

  • I find watching these videos of your very funny. Alot of side stories, that make me say, yea I can relate to this. Like when I lost my cousin Cecilia in Tikanaka in the Amazon Jungle.

  • god, I really sucked at sight reading

  • I just realised.. you have a really calming voice ahah :S

  • Your jokes are so corny but nice advice.

  • @mdofx Should this be funny or something?

  • i wish i'd seen this earlier...sight reading is the worst prt of an exam...

  • you look like the sherminator...from american pie...pretty sick

  • It's been 5 minutes after I watched this video and I am still hearing "never, ever, never, ever ...ever ..." It's stuck. :) I am going to go to sleep and this going to haunt me.

  • @knazir

LOL, perhaps he was trying to hypnotize you..I guess we got the point!

  • Hi I just want to say thank you for posting this video. I have been playing for about five years now and although my sight reading skills are good I really struggle with more complicated pieces and often leaves me abandoning a piece. After watching and taking notes I feel a bit more confident to try these techniques. I always enjoy your videos as they are always down to earth, friendly and humorous and although you are very highly skilled you really explain musical terms with all abilities.

  • way to extend the video man

  • This video could have been about 10 minutes shorter, without all the jokes and stories.... you've helped me a lot, and you explain really great.... just give up the jokes/stories and it will be great... thanks.

  • @YoavMr Exactly!!!!!! i feel the same way. but thanks to the guy.

  • @YoavMr I love his sense of humour! I would argue it helps one learn, because you're more likely to forget uninteresting, humourless data stated in a monotone. It keeps it fresh, fun, and enjoyable! :D

  • My teacher always told me to never ...ever...ever...ever...ever..ever...stop too but guess what I always...always...always...always...always do lol

  • "...never stop or go back, ever, never, never, ever...ever."

  • hey thanks so much!!!! :D

  • A la ..... Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder. Please do a vid on playing by ear. thank you.

  • Want to share cool new piano learning device in Gizmag

    Google “gizmag pianomaestro”

  • @NeVarajMe ur kinda mean.

  • sight reading is not easy for me. in the exam they just give you like 30 seconds to read and then you need to play :(

  • @Cindy12345ful Same with me :)

    Are you in Trinity college????

  • @Cindy12345ful sucks im takin piano next year in high school

  • @Cindy12345ful In vocals you have to sing it in 30 seconds. -Much- worse o__o

  • your jokes are so infuriating im sorry.

  • i didn't even manage to watch this video continuously but always paused or skipped back when there was something i didn't understand because i was distracted. damn... i guess that says a lot about my problems with sight-reading. anyway, i really enjoyed your lesson. I have that etude book at home and told myself: imagine it's a novel and you're reading it from the beginning till the end. a bit of it every day.

  • @hoppareiter i know how ya feel man. im in band and they give about a minute before they tell you to perform it in UIL. my band director says the best thing you can do in sight reading is look at the time signature and key signature. main things that will help. (im in middle school but i hoped i helped...)

  • You open my mind to a whole new perspective of side reading. Thank you!

  • what?

  • you are a good teacher.

  • The lesson is great! Thank you! The side jokes are good - It makes you remember what has been said.

  • @ 16:55 what the?????

  • Your stories are so vivid and I can clearly imagine them, and they make me laugh out loud half the time. Really entertaining. A waste of time probably, but it just makes life richer :) Thanks

  • buttocks paapa

  • kundi paapa

  • using this for my flute audition:)

  • Thank you! Reading notes intervalically! That is way faster than playing notes by their name.

  • LUL so many side jokes, but besides that thanks this helped me a lot

  • OK...So...

  • hahaha... ever... ever..........ever

  • You ramble too much... which is why this is over 20 freakin minutes... xD

  • @asynonym85 y dont u post one for 5 mins dood ??

  • @jevres342 Why don't you buy me a video camera... dood?

  • I find this so hard, I dont have these books and i cant find a place to buy them, it is so hard this, its imposible for me if the piece isnt in c major. Does anyone know places where i can downlaod these books?

  • @JimJimJimNL practice everyday da macha

  • @SMMGify..thanks for the reply

  • My piano teacher said that 'who wants to teach sight-reading?!'. I think she is wrong, your videos on sight reading makes a lot of sense! Thanks so much!

  • what is the difference between note reading and sight reading. Which one is better approach in learning or playing a score sheet. Mahalo!

  • greetings mr.andrew!

i hope you can reply to this question of mine.

you as a pianist, teacher, and almost 2decades of experience in doing this,

if someone gives you a sheet of music, which is never familiar to you,can you play it easily??i mean,it's the first time you see the music or the song..and since you said if you're good in sight reading, you can play other piece easily..something like that.

will it takes you, mr.andrew,to practice the song first.

or you can at least play it well at 1st look?

  • I love how people so easily criticize the guy and his teaching methods. Like any of them are playing Carnegie Hall ffs. I've watched about 20 of these lessons and I've learned so much. It definitely encourages me to practice a lot and to look up other online sources on theory to learn more.

  • I love your Canadian accent ^-^

  • Your Canadian accent is cute, and your hair is awesome. Great video dude!!!

  • Andrew thank you!

You're clever, funny and you've a fantastic way to teach and to convey passion for piano and for music theory!!! ( ...pretty rare...) smack smack.

  • hey, Goku from Dragon Ball called and said he wants his hairstyle back... good video!

  • Just keep swimming, just keep swimming :3

  • thanks for vids they help and i dont even play piano!

  • I'm new to pianos and it's a challenge to play with both hands, I can kind of play simple things with both hands but totally different notes my hands kind of follow one another, anyone have suggestions ...btw thanx for vids there awesome

  • @Bigft113

first play the part for each hand with just that hand. have that down smooth for both hands. next play the hands together, reaaaaally slowly. practice that a lot and it'll get faster

  • Oh and btw, u look more like a mad scientist rather than a musician :P

  • Get to the point goddamnit ...

  • "ill be back" wait no bad example, you dont want to go back ROFLOLMAO!!!!!!!

  • Is important to count in your head while sight reading?

  • you can survive being bored to tears for 22 minutes, you might learn something,

  • Excelente lesson, i was looking for free lesson like this, it is great job, I have a question, which trick do you have to read the bass at the same time you are reading the melodies..it is kind hard read two secction of one single line??

  • @artunduaga123 I have the same problem. Reading bass clef and treble clef at the same time is hard for me too. It would be great if someone can give a tip or two to make things less confusing.

  • you fail at metaphors

  • Thanks..now i can get an X-box 360 or even get famous

  • hey, may i ask u something? I have a piano exam in 2 weeks but my sight reading is still terrible.... I would like to ask if i could play at my own speed and pace for sight reading, regardless of the speed required to play that short piece of music? Answer asap pls~~

  • @TheHooh Too late for your exam, but the actual best way to learn that, and quickly is to print off a LOT of sheet music (Go ahead and pick songs you like to print so you can use them later) and sit there for hours translating every single note on the page to a letter. That is what I did. I was sight reading okay in one day. A month of doing that for an hour every other day and I had no problems. You don't want to use those papers and look at the letters. Just get used to knowing the letters.

  • @freedomisrising that's how I was teaching myself how to play simple melodies on guitar. I would take the sheet music from a lesson book and write A, B, G or whatever note it was above the notes and then translate them to the note on the guitar. After a few days I was finding I could play a few measures without even looking.

  • you have quite the imagination.Tikanaka indeed...

  • I can peel the apples, bake the pie, make the pie crust from scratch, pop it in the oven, take it out, put some ice cream on it, finish off the pie, and then be like, 'Okay, you just finished the first bar' when I listen to Sunn O))), but I love Sunn O)))...

  • Thanks a lot. I've been playing for over 5 years but I was never good at reading music. Hopefully this helps me get better. I'm so used to playing by ear and memory.

  • How do I know which finger plays which key? This is the most unknown thing for me. I remember You where saying that white is pressed by thumb and the black by third finger. I learn how to press 3 note chords by watching You (by using thumb third and last one) in the previous lessons, but when I play melody like in sight reading, how do I know that I'm using right finger?

  • @Cierpiszewski how people ask, really funny.you think you can learn piano by watching youtube vids.

  • Thank you so much man

  • the analogies that andrew uses like his journey to tika naka through the amazon, and a previous videos analogy that stands out in my mind is to practice scales and such 5 times slow and 1 time fast with the horse that never knew how to run analogy. These comparisons are SO helpful, most of the time i say to myself well i wish someone would have put it like that a long time ago to me lol. just wanted to complement your teaching skills :) please keep contributing to music as a whole as you do

  • i loved how stoned this guy sounds

  • I love your smirk laugh

  • thank you, thank you, thank you...

  • Somebody could so make a pie in the time it takes me to sight read! I am learning how to jam however! Thank you for your lessons!

  • Thanks!

  • You have an amusing voice.

also i enjoyed the apple pie... err... analogy

  • You showed us a lot about music, thank you! But you did not really cover how to put our fingers on the piano and how to move them as we play................

  • @2010ymh When performing simple material, you should be able to figure out your own fingerings without too much difficulty. Complex material usually has fingerings as written by the composer or an editor, so you can get a better idea of how to move your fingers around. As for technique like legato, dynamics, speed, endurance, etc., you'll need to learn those through practice. Check out pianofundamentals (dot) com for one of the best guides ever written on the subject.

  • @T3hL337Sesshy Thank you!!

  • Thanks for sharing your tips on sight reading.

  • helpful. good job. thanks.

  • Dont stop talking plz keep ramblingon and on LOL JK

  • "Cuz she needs you to come get her for some reason..." SEX

  • nice advice, but you should really get to the point quicker, we'd appreciate it.

  • if your thinking of heading to the amazon on an expedition this may be a useful video..... otherwise u`ll just waste ur time- u keep thinking hes gona get to the point but he never does........

  • if your thinking of heading to the amazon on an expedition this may be a useful video..... otherwise u`ll just waste ur time- u keep thinking hes gona get to the point but he never does........

  • it's been a year since I started playing piano. Still, I can't sight read lol.

  • Good tutorial, bad sense if humour

  • thnaks for ur tutorial

  • Very helpful and entertaining

  • i stopped learning the piano about a year ago so i'll start over. thanx for the motivation.

  • you're funny! thanx for the FREEEEEEEEEEEEE tutorial

  • You'll fly off the page and onto the floor... And someone will smack you. Hahahahahah

  • Thanks a lot! Helped me a ton!

    Keep it up.

  • This really helped! Thanks a lot!!!

  • it's easy to learn & retain what he's saying; his voice is so relaxing to listen to, and his metaphors and laughs make this so amazing ^ v ^

  • bah i suck at sheet sight i always look at my hand when i play. but im trying to learn how to look in the sheets while playing. it's hard thoug :(

  • helped heaps.. thanks a lot

  • You get SOOO into your extended metaphors!!!

  • Lypur this lesson could have been done in half the time.I know your trying to lighten up the lesson but this is boring shit dont drag it out unnecessarily..cheers

  • @dozerification lypurs "long" metaphors and such are what helps bang into my and i'm pretty sure others heads what is and what isnt important, if he spends a minute on something and five minutes on something else i'm sure there is a pretty good reason for it. I love his extended lessons and this isn't really for someone who really knows what they are doing this is for those who are literally learning how to play piano for the first time with no prior knowledge.

    Keep it up lypur! :)

  • WELL DONE, Thanks!

  • thank you so much for doing these lessons. you are a great guy. it is really helping me out. so what if your instrument is voice do you know how would sight reading would work for singers? p.s. stop side tracking with jokes and stories so much haha i like it but sometimes its too much.

  • never ever ever ever ... ever..

    lol

  • remeber that he is doing this for free! blimey.

  • your lessons are pretty good i find them funny and for the analogies it works good for young students... I QUOTE "all you needed to say was take your time + do not rush" if i tried to tell a kid that he/she they would most likely not hear me.... any way keep up the good work.

  • I agree, far too many analogies, once you've told us you need to use 50 analogies to go over your point, once is enough, all you needed to say was take your time + dont rush lol XD

  • I think he´s cute :) Thank you for the help!
