The only problem I have with this addition is that it muffles the sound of the the emperor screaming when Vader lifts him up. It's seriously like the only moment of weakness the emperor ever has, and that satisfaction of hearing him scream out as he knows he's fucked gets overtaken by this addition. Although I do like how Vader sounds, like "I'm the boss now, YOU DIE MUDDERFUGGA!"
I'm convinced that Lucas is just screwing with us at this point. The scene as it existed before was incredibly powerful, Darth Vader watching his son writhing and dying under the cruel hand of his own master, seeing the evil for what it really was finally, and making the decision he did to undo some of his evil legacy and come over to the light side. It changes the tone so Vader seems to let his dark side emotion get the better of him, doing what he does out of weakness, not moral calculation.
I understand what Lucas was trying to accomplish, in that he was tying these moments to other pivotal moments in the other movies (Jinn getting stabbed, Padme's death, Luke learning his heritage, etc.
Story wise? On paper it makes sense. Aesthetically it doesn't-- it sounds stupid. Lucas must think his primarily adult audience (for the classic trilogy) must be idiots if they can't get a sense of what Vader is thinking as he looks back and forth with uncertainty
@Wookiestick I guess I don't quite understand the artistic merit of having everyone say "nooooo" at pivotal moments throughout the films. It doesn't add anything overall and especially not to this scene. In this scene especially, the addition of that dialogue actually detracted from the emotional impact, and changed the nature of the character and the meaning of the event both for the worse. You are right about it just sounding bad, too.
Lucas is huge about having echoing moments that tie in to the destiny of the mythos. Just like every film has someone saying "I have a bad feeling about this." There is a repeating patten of motifs in the movie, like Luke and Anakin getting their limbs chopped off by the villain, bad guys falling down endless shafts, Wilhelm screams etc. It's artful,in that there's a pattern to it. I also realize art is in the eye of the beholder, and not everyone feels that way.
@Wookiestick Actually I think he saw he fucked up with Ep. III even including the INITIAL "nooo" and got it right. Act one, Anakin says no to Mace Windu. Windu dies. Act two, Vader says no to the Emperor. Anakin "dies." Here's where it gets tricky. The false win, the one where people think the good guy has won but hasn't comes when Vader strikes down Ben Kenobi. That plotted the seed of Anakin's then inevitable redemption. Kenobi's death for reals cancelled out Anakin "dying." Luke = prestige.
@Mysterwright Luke had to be more like Vader in order for Vader to remember and reawaken the Anakin that still dwelled in him. Ex. the McGuffin role of food in Disney's Ratatouille. How Anton Ego fully realizes why it is he got into restaurant reviewing in the first place: his Mama's Ratatouille.
Whoever hates this is not a true star wars fan but as for me I am a true star wars fan and I love this clip and the movie it doesn't matter if its different or what star wars will always be the best movie in history thumbs up if you agree
Wow, I was willing to give this the benefit of the doubt and at least watch it and not just accept the fact that it should be flamed like the rest of the changes he's made, but holy crap! This is even worse than I would have expected it to be. The argument that people don't like it cause it's raping our childhood is invalid, this is as awful an idea as GL adding the Emperors screem into Empire when Luke was falling into the pit on Bespin, (which he later took back out), this just doesn't work.
@ASHL0TTE Being a Star wars fan doesn't mean you have to like every change lucas makes to the movies. We fans are in love with the movies, not with their director. besides,Why would you wanna change something that's already perfect? STAR WARS was perfect the way it was back in 1977. He has the right to do it, but it doesn't mean it's right. Georgie has been fucking up star wars since the release of the special edition trilogy back in 97. And he fucked up even more with the prequels.
I think it adds more depth to the scene, and acualy makes vader seem more compasionate, rather than a machien, by this point he has turned back to the light, after seeing his only son, the last conection to the life he onece had with padme, dieing at the hands of the villian who has manipulated him for his entire life, i mean, origionaly he just thought "hmmm, luke or the empire? luke or the empire? hmmm, yea luke" *throws the emperor off the edge* aint that great parenting?
You know, now that I've actually seen this scene in a better context, I actually think I like this version better. And this is coming from someone whose been a star wars fan since he was seven and whose favorite of all six films is Return of the Jedi.

I've read several sources that the RotJ "no" is an outtake from James Earl Jones' RotS one.
