@JSenator06 I was born in 79 but I like it all and thank God have progressed with the music. Nothing wrong with likin stuff from past as long as you're not stuck there.
hated this song when it came out. still hate it. had to visit here to see if my feelings have changed. if anything, i hate it even more. songs about music almost always suck. every time i hear it, i imagine it wafting through the aisles of a decrepit dollar general store in the suburbs. or maybe a nursing home.
no wonder it always included in the list of worst songs ever recorded. the only song i hate worse than this one? hip to be square, also by you-know-who.
@gregorybrian maybe worst to you cause you have no taste in music Justin Bieber lover, go take your complaints somewhere else cause no one wants to hear you QQPP about songs you don't like that actually made the charts and were hits, so go back to the cave you crawled out of and shut your damn mouth.
@AliensFan25 excuse me but crappy songs make the charts all the time. it's something called "commercialism" and it's aimed at consumers, not connoisseurs. for the record i'm a degreed musician, composer, award-nominated sound designer and all-around media monster. i think i know a bit about music. i only expressed my opinion about the song. you, on the other hand, chose to trash me personally and tell me to "shut (my) damn mouth." i think you've clearly demonstrated who has "taste."
@gregorybrian if you were all those things then maybe you could see past your clearly biased opinion and perhaps see why this song, whether you like it or not, is both fantastically composed and performed.
@BenSpeirs all opinions are biased. that's what makes them opinions. i was simply expressing my own. you expressed yours earlier. you would probably hate the music i like. if you must know why i don't like the song, it's because i find the melodies and percussion uninspiring, the subject matter narcissistic (i hate songs about music). why is there this lead-up to a solo which you just know is going to be on a guitar but turns out to be a... saxophone? that is lame, no matter how you slice it.
@gregorybrian I could be wrong, but I believe that they used the sax because it was hugely popular... Note the Eurythmics, Robert Palmer, ZZ Top, etc. all made use of some kind of sax.
I recall that for elementary music classes in 86-87, all city rental stores ran out of saxophones. They convinced kids like me to take up the clarinet or similar instruments, so every school band was like 85% reed/wind and sounded much worse than a more balanced beginners' band likely would. *g*
@XyzzyZork i love all instruments. i only judge how they're used. popularized usage of certain instruments doesn't equal genius or high quality to me. in every movement in the world of pop, you'll see that pioneering artists did something interesting and then some artists who aren't very pioneering latch onto the pioneers and make craploads of money only because they take the original idea and mix in their knowledge of marketing to look like groundbreakers in pop music.
@gregorybrian Anybody can get *a* degree: the school and level are what matter, and very similar goes for award nomination, which could be a local club, 'net group, or something prestigious.
"Composer" is just like being a "writer": even people that idly practice claim the title. Even then, even being great at one genre/sub-genre doesn't make us qualified to judge other ones; it doesn't even mean we're good at judging our genre.
Hope you see what I'm getting at; I don't intend offense.
@XyzzyZork look, i'm a connoisseur as well as a consumer. i like what i like. i was just responding to BenSpeirs' and others' implication that my opinion is based on ignorance. for the record, i studied, in university, under accomplished recording artists, including one from windham hill, people who've jammed with miles davis and taj mahal and many others. i've performed and studied music from every corner of the globe. take my judgement as you will. ignore it. amen it.
@gregorybrian BTW, I agree about crap making the charts on a regular basis, though I focus primarily on lyrics. The whole conversation reminds me of a disagreement I had once:
Me: I love this song, even if it is depressing.
Ex-BF: But it's pretty!
Me: What?! It's about a couple that's been best friends since childhood but lost each other because they grew apart!
Ex: But it's PRETTY!
In other words, it all depends on who you ask & what aspects of the music they natively focus on!
@XyzzyZork couldn't agree more. i've heard great lyrics but boring, predictable instrumentation and melodies. and i've heard the reverse. for me, it's about balance. great lyrics and great music in the same song. if you can capture the essence of the meaning of a song with both, you've really got something.
damn that girl at 3.27 is HOT! This is a good song, and should let those little brats making the "junk" they call music today that what they're doing now, is just embarassing and stupid.
Haha! Born in '91, and I recall dad playin this in hs old work van along with "Buttermilk Biscuits" on an old mix tape he would play X3 This song, BB, and Baby Likes To Rock it Like A Boogie Woogie Cho-Cho Train, bring back ALL kinds of Memories! EEEK!
@weapon13WhiteFang hey don't say you're born in '91 like it's that long ago. I was born in 1990 and it was pretty recent, okay? haha i guess I'm a little touchy
I totally hear all you guys saying about feeling from the wrong time. In a way I've felt it even more since I was born in '81. It's real iffy for my age group since some are quite old school, but some are hip hop fans or mainly like current stuff. The ones who diss the 80s make me feel old.
I was listening to this stuff in high school (during the late 90s) so I guess I was retro before that was even common, lol.
Huey was always one of my childhood faves, esp since I'm from the Bay Area.
@JPMcFly1985 I was a late bloomer as I was born in '88 but all the 80's music I grew up with. I used to play the HL&TN tape everyday when i was a kid, that and van halen, diamond dave, pantera, etc... love the old school rock & roll/metal
@JPMcFly1985 lol, you think thats bad? I was born in '94, and I can't even listen to modern music! This is my favourite band, none of the singers have quite the same charm as artists like Huey Lewis. I would LOVE to see them in concert, they are one of the few bands I know of that are still together and touring.
Yeah, some people your age group are actually probably more retro than mine (which I think is cool). I guess because new music isn't that good, lol. Plus I was a teen in the 90s when rap was huge.
I agree there's just something happy about their music and I've heard they're still great live.
Also, would people agree with me that they should always play this song with Its Still Rock'n Roll to Me. I mean, both are kick ass songs, and they are so similar in meaning:D
Kinda suprised they don't mention New Orleans, Atlanta, Vegas, Houston, Philly or Chicago, or many other towns that had important aspects on music and rock, yet they mention Austin, Tusla, and San Antonio, and for some reason DC when they should have said Baltimore.
Still, save the most important cities for last, In Cleveland (danana) DETROIT!
lol, now THIS is music. I can sing along to all their songs. My parents say hat I was born a couple of decades too late, because I'm fifteen, and they are my absolute favourite band. I will not tolerate listening to modern music. The radio put on the song 'Heart and Soul' and I freaked out XD It was fun.
lol, I feel the same way. I am 23, born in '86, and I still like alot of songs before my era. I flip some old people out walking through the halls of the nursing home humming/singing "If you're blue, and you don't know where to go too, why don'tcha go were fasion sits..... puttin' on the ritz!" (or anything else from the Ratpack). It's like I say, I don't hate any type of music (although alot of rap seems stale to me), but you can find anything from the 50's- to the present in my music library.
And I also agree with other people's comments--this is real rock. And also, the Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Queen, that's all real rock as well. Today it's all these Disney tweens that have 0 talent. (no offense to any fans) Huey Lewis is one of my favorite 80s artists. My parents sat near him at a baseball game in Boston when they went in 1984. Lucky . . .
Although I'm practically 21 years old and Huey was a few years before my time, I used to love listening to his music when I was little. One of my favorite songs is "Stuck with You." I still have the FORE cassette tape we used to listen to (and a vinyl record but it skips) and I pop it in every now and then. I love the song but the heartbeat at the beginning is so scary--imagine waking up in the middle of the night in the dark and hearing that O_O
lmao HUH?!? he says "where else can you do a half a million things, all at a quarter to three" and my God is that true! (but you will need to have actual money, leave the monopoly money at home this trip :-))) cause New York will cost ya for that good time
I don't why he says NYC a million things to do at a quarter to three? Million things? Yeah right like sit at a bar... wait for a bus at the Port Authorithy... get blown by a prostitude... there the three I can think of at that time.
I'm only 20, but I think this is excellent music. The lyrics are spot-on, too; I hate modern day music, and I love stuff like this. Huey Lewis is awesome!
no rat nick it is not dead just starting over 65 year old drummer just hit any small bar in your area old r/r WILL BE BACK but we need some new ROCK LIVES FOREVER NO STOPING IT CAN'T STOP THE WAVE It will just live on forever keep it simple and play it hard but from the heart THAT CAN'T BE STOPPED
The sad part is while people are masterbating to Miley, things won't change by bitching, just stop listening to the crap they call music, and listen to stations that only play the good stuff, they'll get the picture, educate the kids FFS, make them hate the crap that comes out nowadays
@ratnick 1st of all, if you don't think there are still musicians rebelling against the norm, you are fooling yourself. look at bands like the So So Glos, Small Wonder, Titus Andronicus, Gowns, and so many more, and you'll see the same youthful power that was alive in the Clash, Chuck Berry, and Iggy Pop.
2nd of all, I don't know if Huey Lewis, really qualifies as music to make daddy upset with
Let me see if I can remember all of their names.... Huey Lewis, Johnny Colla, Chris Hayes, Mario Cippolina, Sean Hopper, and Billy Gibson. See, this was back when people made music because they loved music. It wasn't all about making money, getting movie deals, getting deals to be product sponsors. It was all about the music.
Huey Lewis and the News could come out today and have the same impact as they did in the 80's. Retro but cool as shit. One of the most underated bands ever!!!!
Quite possibly one of the greatest rock music videos of all time, as well as the best rock song ever made. No wonder I don't listen to this other stuff at all. Rock on, Huey!
I dont care what people say but man that is what I call music. I love the 80's. Also I am looking for 80's fans. If you wanna join my group just ask me to be your friend. Take care.
I'm 21 years old and this music rocked. I'm trying to start a band that sounds a lot like Huey Lewis and the News. Does anybody think this sound would work now days???
I think that's a great idea. Today's music is getting stale and boring and needs something fresh. I think the future of music is in the past. Lately you see more and more retro sounding bands that still manage to sound unique and manage to hit it big (i.e. Wolfmother, The White Stripes, etc). Honestly, I do think that sound would work now days.
Well you know, most of todays music is lacking of a certain magic to it. Most of them are lacking of the 80's feel to it, that what I mean. 'Cause the 80's really had a certain spark and originallity. But every now and than there comes certain band with that fire to it. You'd be surprised. Gotta take some credit for some newer bands out there - Some do try very hard to keep it old-school. Hopefully,I'm not the only one who feels that way.
yeah, seriously. Most of the new bands don't really have that certain spark like the band of the 80's do. But everynow and then, there comes certain band that plays great stuff - old-school style.

Ah, the good old days. Where the organ player used a Hammond B3, not some wimp-ass little toy keyboard. And Leslie speakers too. Bet the "keyboard" players today could'nt even pick one up.
Classic song. It's a pity the message isn't true anymore. If it's still beatin' there isn't an amplifier loud enough to make the young people hear it.

This song could not have come out today because the heart of rock & roll has died.
Been dead for quite sometime now.
You can thank all the kids in high school today.

Has anyone seen my personal cover of this song in its live@25 form? If not check it out.

God, look at Chris Hayes... I wanna babysit him. Sad. I am so old.
BigFatFairy1970 3 years ago
Huey Lewis and the News could come out today and have the same impact as they did in the 80's. Retro but cool as shit. One of the most underated bands ever!!!!

They are far superior to any group today.

Well there sooo many great rock songs I can think of.
In this case, it's "heart of rock and roll" and
"I want a new drug".
piloneman 3 years ago
My friends thought I was a geek for loving the News but I guess that is what happens when you have stupid friends. Rock on forevor and always Huey.

Does anybody think this sound would work now days???
radioguy86 4 years ago 4

Hopefully,I'm not the only one who feels that way.
piloneman 3 years ago 20
Don't worry-you're not. Even a teenager like me can tell you that "new" music needs a lot of help.
Theory1066 3 years ago 5
yeah, seriously. Most of the new bands don't really have that certain spark like the band of the 80's do. But everynow and then, there comes certain band that plays great stuff - old-school style.

Now this is the music I grew up listening to, the music of today, it just dose'nt have the "heart" that this stuff dose

One of my favorite songs of the 80's!
