heeey there ! i need to know something . i have 2 blue ringed octopus, and both of them ate an hermit crab 3 days ago. So i bought 3 more crabs in order to give them more food but How often do they eat ?
If dying prematurely is your wish then get this animal, as a first time salt water enthusiast i would highly discourage you keeping anything close to this species at least till you have several years under your belt. There are many pros to owning an octopus...dying is not one of them. If you must have a an octopus for your first creature in your tank choose a mimic octo and flash pictures of the blue ring at it. Best of luck on the aquarium they truly are great.
Where would be a good place to learn a good deal about this octopus? I'm interested in getting one, but I don't want to die via lack of knowledge. I want to get any and all tips and information that I can on this little guy, so any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.
whoever owns one of this is lacking intelligence, you get bitten once, you WILL die a slow and painful death. go with a bimac and get a bigger tank. this is complete stupidity at its finest
I took extremely safe measures when working on the tank. My hands never got close to the water. I know what I'm doing. I have tons of experience with aquatic systems and dangerous animals. I agree that any unexperienced person should avoid this animal though because if it bites you, you will be dead before any help arrives.
My awsome little octopus never bothered any of my fish or fire shrimp. It would even let the fire shrimp clean it by rolling on one side and then the other while apearing to enjoy the mesage. I never put my hands in the tank. I used tongs and other equipment to work on the tank. The octopus seemed very friendly. I would even play with it using it's feeding stick. It is the most interesting pet that I will ever keep.
Wow I love these blue ringed octo's.. For someone that knows what they are doing and is careful, must be so interesting! I'm curious, are these legal to have? (im in Oregon, USA) and where did you get yours? I have been looking at setting up a salt water setup and getting one of these. Any information you could give would be cool :)
can that buetiful creature be kept with fish and cotral cause i have a small reef going and i have 5 fish 2 bigger clowns and a yllw tng 2 cleaner shrimp a marine betta and a smaller snowflake eel
@bigstick54 I would not recommend trying to catch them. I was bitten by the tiniest baby blue ring about 20 years ago. We managed react quickly to squeeze most of the venom out within about 2 minutes. But even then I became very tired. The one that bit me was only about the 10mm big!!! Even watching this video still gave me chills.
@AvgasStew There is not a single documented case where anyone has survived a Blue Ring bite. By the laws of nature, even if there was a difference in the potency of the venom, the younger ones would have a higher potency to make for easier survival. I am not saying @bigstick54 should not head your warning but I will need further proof and evidence before I believe you were ever bit by a Blue Ring octo.
@bganulin there has been many. In fact there are less than 100 recorded deaths of bluering poisoning total. Laws of nature do not work like that either - poison is the same (but dose is smaller as its admitted via saliva and smaller octi has smaller beak which has less saliva).. But probably the most poignant piece of info I have for you is that not all bites contain poison. Perhaps I was one of the lucky few that didn't as all I felt was tired. Perhaps due to lack of adrenalin afterwards?
A Mantis Shrimp can kill a Blue Ring Octopus.
