  • thas very good and perfect. some posts here shows it wrong (wrong like my english ;-) )

  • Thanks!!

  • other video i don't understand but this video show me the best

  • If you are studing a Japanese style you should wear it as she first showed before tucking it over. It should have a criss-cross on the backside. The knot in front is just a simple "square knot". The single layer look is for Korean styles. Most schools nowadays wear color uniforms of their choice, so they can do their own thing. Usually, when you go to sanctioned tournaments you must wear white with little or no patches.

  • Lawl I learned this from my dad

  • KARATE GI RED ?

  • Thanks alot!!!! xD

  • Thx last minute I forgot

  • yay! i did it!

  • uh black-red karate gi? That´s not very traditional. We`re only allowed to wear (even undershirt) white stuff

  • at 1:10 thats where i get confused.Do you have to put it all the way to the back,or in the middle of both of them

  • @TPKVoidedHazardous all the way to the back. :)

  • @Ivarsgirl ok thank you

  • @TPKVoidedHazardous this video is really good it helped me with my belt:)

  • Clear, concise, easy to follow and exactly how I tie mine!... nice job!

Something all those reading this may wish to consider... make sure the 'tucking' happens on the left side of the body, also is a good idea to half twist the bottom loose end before placing the top belt over it when tying the final knot.. it just sits much nicer is all! ...Top video and thanks for reinforcing what I suspected was correct! ;-)

  • i find that my belt is really long, and when i kick, it often hits me in the face, if i tie my belt this way, will that stop happening?

  • @GamerInari Some belts are designed to be double wrap like mine and some are single wrap. If it's a double being worn as a single then yes this should fix the problem! Or if it is a double it might just be too big for you, perhaps your instructor could get you one size smaller next time you test :)

  • @Ivarsgirl great thx :)

  • Thank you very much. Other videos don't show you the back! I study Wado Ryu style of Karate by thw way, what style do you do? I finally put my belt on properly! But I think my yellow belt is to short. ^_^

  • Osu

  • My 5 year old son just earned his yellow belt this week. He needs to learn how to correctly tie his belt for this level. He (and his dad) thank you for this video. We tend to forget how to do this as soon as we leave class.

  • Thank you

  • finaly! xD

  • my only problem is that it comes loose easily!

  • Thanks for the vid because In a month or two Im doing the grading for my black belt so i wanted to know the proper way to tie it. BTW I do Shotokan Karate

  • I didn't know Pam from "The Office" knew self-defense etiquette. Seriously--thank you. This is very helpful!

  • Finally someone who has it right!! Well done on this good video.

  • what kind of karate do you do? your gi is red and black :S

  • i used to always wash my new belts just to soften it up a bit!!when i got to 3rd dan my sensei showed me a different way to tie by making a loop at one end and the other under and through and it never came loose, it was some how a masters way and you could fasten it like that 3rd and above, even think 5th and above was different again... that was Ju Jitsu tho....

  • Thank you so much! I just bought my karategui and I didn't really know how to properly wear it, and I also didn't know it was so complicated! But you made it in a very simple explanation! Thanks a lot again!

  • ahh very helpful! thank u

  • =O red suit =D

  • Hey! Thanks alot. That was a big help that eliminated having to ask my young son's Sensei the embarassing question. Been too many years and I just couldn't remember. Good video. Thank you.

  • can you please help my bely always turns upside down, sideways, and it sometimes un- knot itself.

  • I have a shorter belt so i should not do the double strap or it will be too loose!

  • @2000hadee excellent point! Yes, most black belts are double wrap but many martial arts styles use single wraps for most levels! In which case, it's just a square knot in the front (right over left, then left over right) and done! Thanks!!!

  • I am also in young champions i am a red belt with a white stripe fyi ha.

  • hey thanx for the vid was great im a purple belt in australia. ive been doing karate for about 9 months i study go ju rue karate

  • thx :) <3

  • Can anybody please tell me why she has a red gi? i tought they where ment to be white

  • it depends

  • thats nothing, brazilian jujutsu has PINK gi now

  • it depends on what level of karate you are doing, she should really be wearing a black one, but w/e, novices (white/yellow belt) wear white gis, intermediate (orange-brown) wear red, and masters (black) wear black gis

  • I've seen white, red, and black. I just guess it's where you are and what not.

  • different dojos have different uniforms. Some are black, white, red, blue... whatever that schools prefers. There are a lot of schools that use white. Mine uses black. Red looks pretty awesome though

  • ok thank you!

  • That was a great video.... thanks! for your help...

  • thank you

  • thank you

  • This is the best explination as you kept it simple.......

  • Thanks it really helped

In a white belt, started last week.

    Thanks :D

  • thanks

  • Thank you!

The best video I ever seen that explains how to do!

  • omg its been 4 years and i still dont know how

  • I think it's important to let people know that are beginners in karate or are interested in taking karate classes, the biggest reason NOT to wash your karate belt is because MOST of the belts are 100% cotton, if you wash them they will SHRINK considerably....it's NOT a bad thing to clean them but I would suggest "spot cleaning" with something like a tide color fabric safe pen or in a way that won't saturate the belt so it doesn't shrink. If it gets too disgustingly dirty, then have it replaced.

  • THANKYOU!

P.S. this won't matter to you, but I study Kempo Karate and my tournament is coming SOON!!!

  • Hey, yeah it matters! That's cool. Good luck!

  • Thank you very much!

I do Tae Kwon Do and I got my black belt on 12/20/08.

Now I know how to tie my belt properly.

  • Wow. karate is the best sport ever!!!

    ^ ^ U

  • more like the best self defense....

  • I keep doing it but I just cant

  • hmm why is my belt longer than the others? oh nevermind i remember now, sensei got me a bigger size... o_O

  • a red gi?

  • Instructor. Students wear black at Young Champions. I don't like it personally. But, I don't get to decide.

  • students wear black? we are are in white here... what style is this?

  • It's the Young Champions organization. It's a karate style that they built around several different styles of martial arts. It's for underpriveledged kids (dirt cheap) and in order to get instructors they have to pull from all different martial arts backgrounds. We teach in community centers and things, mostly in depressed neighborhoods. The kids used to wear white but they switched to black about 2 years ago.

  • Thanks for the vid!

  • You're so cute^^ geez. and l like your video the most out of all the videos out there. It is the easiest and best explained method out there. Thank you very much.

  • haha jon, you got owned xD

  • thanks i got my first uniform next wednesday so thanks a lot!

  • Im a brown-black belt and im getting my black belt soon and i tie it differently...are there many differnt ways to tie them?

  • Yes, there are many ways. I just find this way easiest to explain :)

  • tryed doing while sitting on the chair, didn't work well lol but i only just got my white belt yesterday so,...blah XD

  • lol word me too. did u have trouble tieing the gi too. lol it took me like half an hour to figure it out. reason being is that im part of a self instructorial martial arts club. we learn from books and different senseis pay us visits here and there. but i got my gi today after over a year of training finally and i got advanced white belt. but yeah it was hard!!! thanks so much black belt lady cause the belt tying annoyed me also.

  • thanks

  • Ty's for posting, really helped me out =)

  • Thank You Very Very Very Much:D:P

  • What about that other way when you tie it all the way around, starting with one of the lengths at the length you want it to be, then you wrap it round neatly behind you, then tying it?

  • Yeah I know several people who do it that way. The end result is the same. I have trouble doing it that way because it always ends up with one side longer than the other.

  • Thank you! I just got back into karate into the same Dojo I was in before. I wanted to respect my Shihan by knowing how to tie my belt upon returning.

  • Forgot the most important part, DON'T LET YOUR BELT TOUCH THE GROUND!!! Thats respect for the school and the art.

  • Yes, very important. I stress that in class but forgot to say it in the video :)

  • you did say that lol.

  • I know that you are crotty people but I was just curious if judo and jiu jitsu people are not respectful of their school and/or art when they roll around the mats...................... the belts are touching the floor. Just being a smart ass.

  • Hi, that's a very good question. It's perfectly fine to allow the belt to touch the ground in the course of training, while you are wearing it (we do situps for instance). The concept of not letting it touch the floor applies more to just throwing it around as if it's not an important object. You want to avoid tossing it in a heap on the floor as if it were a dirty sock, but as long as you're wearing it and training in a respectful manner it is OK.

  • Thanks, I finally know how to do the damn thing. Racial Purity!

  • Well, I've been doing Karate for about 5 years, and did my 1st Dan black belt grading sometime last year, but all though that time I've been tying my belt my own way and it never looked right.

To that end I started looking for the proper way to tie my belt and I've been looking for 30 minutes to this point, and this is the only demonstration that works for me.

    Thanks ;-)

  • lol that must be quite embarrassing :P

  • what is the size of that belt?? i need a response.. thank you!

  • I think it's either a 4 or a 5.

  • Thanks! Now I can embarrass myself purely by being 5 years out of practice instead of being 5 years out of practice and oblivious about how to tie a belt!

  • Thanks a lot. This was very helpful! Best description ever! :)

  • Dont wash your belt so you may show off your opponents internal body fluids that you have collected over the years.

  • as a martial artist we have to be humble and down to earth, show off to others is just not a rightful manner.i've been in karate+jujitsu+silat for many years, and all the masters i've met so far is very low profile and kind

  • obviously your not low profile yourself lmao!!!!

  • Thank you so much, best description Ive seen, and Ive watched many tied. My son is really enjoying his karate and tieing his belt has been a problem..

  • Yay That Was Really Helpful >w<

  • cool thanks

  • Thank you for posting this, It's really helpful

  • grrr... i just got my blu belt and its all stiff and difficult o tie....

  • They do tend to be stiff at first. A little sweat will soften it up. Congrats!

  • thank u i was struggling how to tie my belt

  • You are very welcome!

  • yes i fiannly found a video on this! thank you i found this video b4 i had to got to TKD class :)

  • nicly explaned

  • thx so much, i been tyin my belt for 3 years with it crossed over at the back :s

  • Ohhhhh ok, thanks for the video ^_^

  • i finally made a knot god it took a week to get it....sigh

  • Awesome! Congrats :)

  • so freking hard im stuck on making a knot

  • You can do it!!! Just keep practicing :)

  • wonderful, but everyone knows that you wear your belt about 2/3 inches bellow your belly button infront of your hara.

  • indeed, but for the purpose of teaching 4 year olds I keep it as simple as possible :)

  • Aye I was only joshin' ya anyway :)

It's good that you teach this, rather then allowing them to look messy.

I like the bit about washing your belt, very true!

  • Simply but much needed!!!
