I think I get it. The spinal columns represent meaningless romantic partners, relegated to the roles of quick pick-me-ups that can be cheaply digested at your local hotel.
I guess it's just like watching a david lynch's film: you get a feeling that cannot be named or described (in a precise way). I think it confronts you with 'The Real' (difined as 'what cannot be expressed in a symbolic -language of course- way.
