It's Time For (1986) - a little disappointing at the time, but in retrospect classic Jonathan
Modern Lovers 88 (1988) Amazing! Circle I; California Desert Party; When Harpo Plays His Harp it doesnt get any better!
Also side 1 of Back in Your Life (1979) is great and there is good stuff on both Jonathan Richman (1989) and Jonathan Goes Country (1990) especially the coruscating Since She Started to Ride on the latter.
Jonathan Sings! (1983) When Im Walkin is sublime, as are This Kind of Music and, of course That Summer Feeling (the original and best version)
Rockin' & Romance (1985) my first JR experience, and every song a gem Im Just Beginning to Live is the essence of exuberance, where language cant keep up with the sheer joy in life. Also Walter Johnson Chewing Gum Wrapper and so many more.
Saw JR in Tokyo in 1990 . He walks in the club with guitar on his back and heads for the dressing room . 10 minutes later he is on stage , alone with guitar singing , and playing percussion with his foot stomps on the stage floor . Half the time he'd just sing solo w/o guit or stomp . Great show .
I love this guy. saw him years ago in glasgow and passed him in sauchiehall street.. think noah and the whale sound like him in 5 years time .. ice cream van . ...
when i first heard the modern lovers i laughed for ages, he is so hilarious! good video, pity its out of sync a bit and that it cuts him off in the end but still good.
Jonathan Richman is a friend of mine. He paid for my daughter's schooling out of the kindness of his heart. We have dinner together when he is in London and he is an admirer of my work.
i saw jonathan and tommy and vic chessnut at the orpheum in madison,wi. a couple of yrs ago and i cant wait til they come back around... i had a smile on my face the whole night. it was a highly entertaining evening.
Hey - anyone Jonathan says are the Modern Lovers - ARE the Modern Lovers, OK?
I saw this line-up on tour in London and they were fantastic. The other two are prolly the Paley Brothers (one certainly is). They both played guitar and JR did his thing - singing/guitar/dance solo!... and a fantastic saxaphone solo at one point.
So THIS is what happened to that guy with the video camera after American Beauty ended. :P He should do a duet with the nearly naked Recycle Indian from Wayne's World II and Naked Cowboy in Times Square. They can all have a tear in their eye playing in front of the WTC. :D j/k
This is fantastic. I was thinking that no footage existed of this important time in Jojo's life, but thank goodness I was wrong. He has been a one man antidote to these times for so long. God bless you dear Jonathan.
This guys is so cool because he doesnt try to act like it.

For me Jonathans peak (so far) was in the 80s:
Jonathan Sings! (1983) When Im Walkin is sublime, as are This Kind of Music and, of course That Summer Feeling (the original and best version)
Rockin' & Romance (1985) my first JR experience, and every song a gem Im Just Beginning to Live is the essence of exuberance, where language cant keep up with the sheer joy in life. Also Walter Johnson Chewing Gum Wrapper and so many more.

He's one of those people that makes me think 'if he can do it, i can do it!'
And then in the end, i can't, because he's just too damn brilliant in being simple and easy-going.
Love it <3

Oh, there is just nothing in the world cuter than Jonathan Richman and the 1980's. I blush watching this clip, and my heart flutters. He is so sweet.

What song is he singing here that starts at like 35 seconds or so? I think he says Corner Stone? Is that a solo song of his or a Modern Lovers song?
ZombieHipHop2345 3 years ago
Corner Store is on "Jonathan Goes Country," and he plays it in the movie "Kingpin"
