DS version also had toad houses, but they had different stuff in them. In red ones, you would hit a block to get a random power-up. In yellow ones you would always get a Mega Mushroom (a powerup that isn't in the Wii version). In green ones, you would play a minigame to get 1-ups, though instead of firing yourself out of a cannon to pop balloons, you would hit blocks and the minigame ended when you revealed the Bowser icon or got perfect.

Cannons allow you to skip ahead a few worlds without needing to clear the castle stages or bosses. If you wanted to finish the game quickly for example, these can come in handy.

By reading the description and learning how to perform simple deduction.

@Saestrol Okay wait, I don't get it. For the items (yes, I have read the description), how are you able to tell which is safe & which isn't?

Simple deduction where you hit "Safe Panels" (Which never contain any Bowser Icons), and then compare guesses afterwards with the remaining possible boards. "Board" meaning what pattern or set you are currently guessing on.

Basically, you need to have a list of all combinations for that specific world present so you can determine which set of eight item boards the mushroom house picked.
