that play shows the effects of a so-called "astro-turf" field. shit is like carpet. turf nowadays is 100 times than the turf from back then. i think all football should be played on turf. FUCK GRASS!
I just watched that ESPN 30 for 30. I never knew exactly what happened. Thats bullshit.....It made me want to root for SMU from now on..Its funny, they have a better record than Texas this year. Every school is doing what SMU did and everyone knows about..From the President to the A.D to everyone. Go Ponys
SMU was the best team money could buy back then. They eventually got their just punishment from the NCAA. Sure, A&M,and OU were just as bad back then. At least those schools tried to cooperate with the NCAA on the allegations. SMU just thumbed their nose at the NCAA and got the Death Penalty as a result.
The money SMU spent is nothing compared to what Alabama, USC, and others have been caught spending, even adjusted for inflation. SMU only got nailed because they called the NCAA out and pointed out that everyone was doing it. Even with that audacity, had they been a large state school they wouldn't have gotten nailed so hard.
I was there when it happened. Not only did the school get hosed, but when NCAA realized the impact, they stated they would never impose the death penalty again.
@islelivin Not necessarily. The NCAA came deadly close to giving Alabama the Death Penalty in 2002, and threatened to do so if they committed another violation while on probation. USC came pretty close with cheating in football and basketball too.
So sad that SMU never recovered from the death penalty. They were so much fun to watch in the eighties, and the NCAA killed them off far more than they deserved. Now they are a third tier football program.
@brethunterla Good thing we're recovering now. We may not be the best team, but give us a few years. June Jones is turning our program around. We went to a bowl game during his second year as a coach. That's pretty damn good.
uh..Booba, you be doing some spinnin' rose colored glasses thing .. Texas beat SMU 3 times during the James-Dickerson-Mcllhenny years, and again in '84 plus '86

SMU was robbed of the chance of blossoming into a top program.

you wont ever see a bounce like that from a football again since they changed the turf from concrete to field turf.

True.
SMU should sue the stupid-ass NCAA for selective enforcement.
Oklahoma is ten times worse than SMU.

@whiteRASclaud Bullshit..the NCAA proved what SMU did, idiot.

No, they deserved what they got, but so have a lot of other programs (cough, A&M, cough, cough, Oklahoma)that got a free pass.
Be that as it may, SMU has used that as an excuse to be whiny bitches for 20 years. Suck it up, and while you're at it, get a real fight song.

Have one thanks, great one too. Especially when it's played 5,000 times a game to annoy the piss out of anyone from the other school.
But thanks for your concern, and you forgot Alabama on that list.

Not saying SMU didn't deserve the death penalty, but considering it hasn't been "sentenced" to any other college team since, I'd say SMU got hosed.
