In this wonderful song you can tangibly feel the great love and admiration Sondheim feels for Seurat's great masterwork. I makes you open your own heart to it.
So, so, so beautiful. I cannot help but to break into tears. I'm excited to see Daniel Evans perform as Bobby in Company at the Sheffield Crucible next month; he has such a magnificent voice.
Sondheim is a genius - always manages to bring me to tears and make my hands bleed from applauding as a member of the audience and as a singer I want to burst with the thrill of singing his melodies and the choruses are to die for - a composer apart from all others.
When I saw this show on Broadway, hearing this song was so beautiful an experience it brought tears to my eyes. The cast must have loved singing it. They sang with love and passion. Then years later, I saw a superb production in Portland OR and had the same reaction. What a thrilling way to bring down the first act curtain!
Dear Kariboo, in time you will find that no one - absolutely no one - comes anywhere near Stephen Sondheim. The elegance and depth of his lyrics, the music that just keeps giving because you keep discovering new small details that speak volumes of his genius. The simplicity and complexity combined that add up to a masterpiece - every time. I was 17 myself when I discovered Stephen Sondheim (in the 1970s). That was a life changing experience so I wish you all the best.
Everytime they utter the first 'Sunday' I'm in pieces. Every single time. Anyone who has not seen 'Sunday in the park with George' I urge you to get your hands on a copy of the original Broadway production with Patinkin & Peters. You will never forget it.
Simply stunning - such a superbly talented production - from the leads to the chorus to the lush orchestrations of Sondheim. I would have paid anything to attend. (In the US we only have stripped down bands playing Sondheim these days, even the New York Philharmonic sounded tinny doing Company this past weekend.)
Such a georgeous piece of music. The gradual building of tension, beautifully written. It's an absolutely stunning piece of writing. Thrilling and exhilarating. This is a fabulous rendition, from an excellent concert.
I love this piece but can no one else hear the SERIOUS tuning issues the orchestra are having =S

Amazing! Shame it wasn't the original National Theatre cast though. I would have loved to have seen Philip Quast and Maria Freedman perform.
