I don't understand all the sniping at Ric for supposedly hogging the spotlight. First of all he wrote all the damn songs, so he can do whatever he wants! And second, the two singles from Panorama were on showcase for this TV appearance; it just so happened that Ric sang lead on them. Over the years, Ric tapped Ben to sing lead on many hits. Everyone in that band got plenty of time in the spotlight. But it was Ric's band and his songs.
It is amazing to see that the Cars can just flat out rock, but at the time this was pretty "New Wavey".I was into Van Halen and THE WHO at this time but I still had to get Panorama because these tunes were just so unique for that time(and good).
Hell Yea...Rick was really movin and groovin! I think Rick made a new dance called "The washing machine" he he he
I love these performances. Every time I see a song from this night it looks like they are really having a blast! I love they way Elliot does that little bounce/step when he plays. It's really hot! He's really getting into it here. Of course Ben is so cute and sexy it's system overload in my brain. lol
When I saw the Cars on the Panorama Tour back in 1980 at the Baton Rouge Centroplex Shoo Be Doo was the opening song. Oh, and the Motels were the opening act.
Ric must have been on a "Ric Trip" that day, week, month, or even year.
He isn't even playing a guitar during "Shoo Be Do" and another huge deal is that Candy-O should have been sung with "Shoo Be Do"; Ben sings lead on Candy-O (they are on Candy-O as basically 1 song). Ric sang “Gimme Some Slack” so he would sing lead in ALL the songs on that show.
I believe he purposely did this to establish himself as the ONLY lead singer.
Remember, back in those days, whatever people saw on TV was the only reference they had unless they went to a concert or bought an album. Then they would see that Benjamin Orr sang lead, also.
Lots of fans (including myself) didn't know that Ben sang lead at all. I am a big rocker, but out of all the concerts I went to, I never saw The Cars. I have been reading post after post from people stating the same thing.
I really don't know how Benjamin Orr kept up his kind exterior during all those years. I'm sure this topic was a big part of their split. If it wasn't, Ben is a better man than most.
Anyway, I am glad for The Cars new album, but not having a lead singer to sing your backup vocals makes Ric look inept (live). The rest of the band is clean and tight.
Funny how pride will come back and bite you in the behind and there will be no way to remedy it.
Ha ha ha but what will happen to Ric ? He who moves so little usual. I love these guys. Too bad Ben was not before. It is so beautiful in this video !!!
the sound and picture quality on this old live performance is really very good! u can hear each instrument quite clearly, and the band was in top form that night...even Ric's Napoleon Dynamite dance moves were cool...okay, a little weird...but still kind of cool, too. maybe?!
I was a Cars fan back when the debut came out in '78 and PANORAMA, for whatever crazy reason, remains my favorite album from the band. It was also, to my ears, their most adventurous and dark. Having said that, I used to love the show "Fridays." Great musical guests and for a time, as funny as late 70's/early 80's "Saturday Night Live." I remember this performance and the great DEVO spot on FRIDAYS that same year.
I could almost cry watching these guys again! I remember watching this when it was live - being a HS senior at the time. I still like this rendition of Shoo Be Doo better than the album version, and they rocked on Gimme Some Slack too! I'm so happy with the new album, but a little sad at the same time since Ben's not there.
Misfit Kid, Down Boys, You Wear Those Eyes.........this album (Panorama) showed how bold and awesome the band is. They dared to go where other bands were afraid to go, and pulled it off in their own unique style.
Screw the critics is right, this is another legendary Cars album.
Much as I love the Cars, I remember seeing them on the 'Shake it Up' Tour and they looked absolutely bored. The most disappointing show I've ever been to.
@Burningchromosome ~ Oh! Is that who's playing the bass? (j/k) They pushed him so far back on the stage you could hardly see him. They should have put a lampshade on his head or given him the wrong address. It wouldn't be any more obvious. That old green monster was even growing in the early 80's huh? But seriously, you're right he's hardly a marginal player.
@101catsville I also was startled by Ric Ocasek's "dance moves", I have never seen him so animated. If his moves didn't prevent people from noticing Benjamin Orr, remember that he ended up marrying the swimsuit model Paulina Porizkova, who still looks good at 45!
@stargazer477 ummm I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing Ric's bizarre moves! LOL and Benjamin so sexy I just wanna jump on him with a Do Not Disturb sign! ;)
Your comment here is spot on. This album (Panorama, from which Gimme Some Slack comes from) is probably the most overlooked in their catalog yet has some fantastic tracks which I believe stand the test of time quite well.
Yeah, they look so cool and love the performance. Don't think I ever saw Ric move around so much on stage before. Not enough showing of Ben though, he looked Goooooooood! Playin' that bass so fast....
if people really paid attention...this is one of the greatest songs
