  • this is interesting vid.

  • I heard a good way to remember the code is the phrase "Cabury's goodies taste good" but that doesn't work! Maybe "A cadbury good taste"? lol Any suggestions on how to remember?

    Did you catch this article?

"Y Chromosome Evolving Rapidly" (ScienceNOW, January 13, 2010)

"As a result, researchers predicted that the Y chromosome SHOULD BE nearly identical in humans and chimpanzees, like the rest of the genome... When the team members compared the MSY sequences, they got a SURPRISE. They found that the chimpanzee Y chromosome has LOST LOTS of genes that are present in humans...

How come they didn't say humans gained these genes?

  • @loztheatheist 2 of 3

    The article continues:

"...which suggests the human Y resembles that of the common ancestor MORE than does the chimp's Y. Chimpanzees only have two-thirds of the genes present in the human MSY. But the chimpanzee MSY has acquired twice as many palindromes... The addition of new palindromes in chimpanzees and humans has led to MAJOR STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES in the Y of both species, the team reported online in Nature today...

The article concludes with this comment:

"Just when we thought we were getting the sense that we had a pretty good picture of what our genome is like and how it evolved, we get tossed this curve ball," says geneticist Huntington Willard of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. "There are gems still buried in genomes that we haven't fully uncovered yet."

I just can't wait to see what they find next!!

  • "Evolution caught in the act: Scientists measure how quickly genomes change" (PhysOrg, Jan 1, 2010)

"If you apply our findings to humans, then each of us will have on the order of 60 new mutations that were not present in our parents...Everything that is genetically possible is being tested in a very short period," adds Lynch, emphasizing a very different view than perhaps the one we are all most familiar with: that evolution reveals itself only after THOUSANDS, if not millions of years."

  • LozTheAtheist, did you see Tf00t and Dawkins, if not check it out.

  • Hi LTA.

    From the Comments -

'Ph.D.' proves the privelege of education and learning; not unique knowledge.

Ph.Ds tell us that everything started with an Almighty Big Bang, and that life appeared spontaneously

so how come the entire Universe did not remain inorganically sterile ?

  • I understand that the human jaw muscle had a mutation which evolved into making the human brain larger than our relatives the chimpanzee. Under no circumstances can we dismiss evolution. Genomics, fascinating subject.

  • you watched nova...

  • @dude12nothin Can't fool you I love Public Television only thing worth watching.

  • @Dwicker64 True except for jersey shores...

  • This video does a nice job explaining what the genome is, but it fails to explain where the information originated and how it assembled?

I once read that getting all the mutations necessary to evolve a starfish from a one-celled creature is comparable to asking a hundred blind people to make ten random moves each with five Rubik's Cubes and finding all five cubes perfectly solved at the end of the process. The odds against ALL earth's life forms evolving from a single cell are impossible!!

  • Its called evolution, evolution does not happen all at once but small pieces in place by gradual changes over a period of time. Can we test this by looking at fish, reptiles, birds and mammals and see if we share any part of their and our genome and we DO. The more basic the organism is the less structure the genome function or rubiks cube in your case up to a more complex genome like the great apes oh which inc us as we share a common ancestor. Again genetics does not lie.

This was not supposed to be an evolution vs creationists video; this is a fact based medical video which I am going to start publishing next year.

Speaking of creationism, I am going to destroy it by using the medical field to which I work and using other sciences too and to show all the flaws in your god, or simply we can blame it for the stupidity of its creation, if we were created (definitely not intelligently) then he can take sole responsibly for the millions of genetic disorders

  • Cont.

Actually, i am deluding myself, you lot dont want medical knowledge, you have a book that you think is right therefore, you live your life by it, i suppose there is no harm in that, just dont beg science for help when you need it because the chances is its that very science you hate to believe in.

I might not go down the road of little nasty virals/bacteria etc to take the piss out creation, i am just fed up with creationists who thik they know more than people with PHd's.

Best 2 science answers for above is Abiogenesis or earth was seeded from an asteroid like the ones analysed that had small traces of Amino Acids, this means the building blocks of life. Lets not forget NASA has also found Amino Acids in deep space.

Where did god come from? as you say you cant get something from nothing?

So, how did god construct the Genome? Where did he get RNA from to communicate with DNA, why does DNA corrupt and Genes mutate to cause birth defects killing millions of babies a year? its so strange that our genetics that is supposed to be designed perfectly has so many flaws?

What did god create matter from, why has god given us ape genetics?

Please contact Stephen Hawkings for real answers.

Please contact Stephen Hawkings for real answers.

I am referring to the start of the universes ie cosmology, quantum gravity, and the context of black holes. Why has god created something ie black holes that are so destructive they swallow whole galaxies and spit them out totally destroying what was?

Explain to me what an Atom is, where did it come from and how god went about creating it? come to think of it why are our bodies made out of non living matter atoms/molecules?

  • Cont.

Let science answer this for you: -

Atoms make up molecules which form organelles, organelles form cells, cells form tissues and organs, and organ systems combine to form the living organisms.

Tiny molecules serve as building blocks for larger molecules. proteins, nucleic acids, carbonhydrates, and lipids, which include fats and oils, are the four major molecules that underlie cell structure.

Please tell me where your god wrote this process? if you cant backup your claim shut up!

  • I always love the pseudo-statistical argument from creationists. It's like the odds of winning the lottery. What are the chances against one particular person wining? Astronomical. What are the chances that *somebody* will win? 100%. The sad part is, they never understand the concept.

  • @papafox thank you. God or not evolution is real, can you please confirm to AA32 what you believe in? Just to show that your not an atheist trying to convert him. Thanks and great reply. Loz

  • Well, like most Christians I accept the fact that we evolved from previous species. The science-denial of fundamentalists -- be they Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc. -- is pretty much irrelevant to anybody who had a decent science education.

  • Firstly, thank you for your reply. Secondly exactly, what else creationists fail to note is that they say life cannot come from a single cell what do they think the ovum and the male sperm are? They are totally dumb to science and how science works! Its like we dont speak the same language.

"I always love the pseudo-statistical argument from creationists"

Now if chance is the cause of the universe, there is no room for God. And if chance is the determinative force or a cause exists even in the frailest form, God has been dethroned, right? The sovereignty of God and chance are inherently incompatible. If chance causes or determines anything, God is not truly God.

So what is chance? Is it a cause or a force?

  • @AA32m7io1

    1) I describe myself as a non-denominational Christian. I was raised Catholic, but have rejected organized religion for the most part (partly out of cynicism). I am skeptical of much of the dogma as being either irrelevant -- or at worst, extraneous additions that have historically been used to control the population. (Example: "You're going to hell" as the ultimate threat to intimidate people into compliance.)

  • 2) I used the Catholic Church as one example mainly because it's the largest Christian denomination, but I also mentioned several other mainstream denominations that also support teaching evolution, including many evangelicals. And I agree that when religions try to delve into scientific matters, they run the risk of painting themselves into a corner. That's why I think religions should follow those examples; that they must coexist with science.

  • 3) If their dogma conflicts with observed physical reality, then it's their dogma that's at fault, not science.

  • 4) I have learned much by what some people call the most important answer in all of science: "I don't know." I'm willing to apply that in some situations and accept that there often aren't clear answers. (Organized religions don't like that, but that's their problem, not mine.)

  • 5) Even if chance is the cause of the physical universe as we understand it, I don't see that as relevant to the existence of God. To me, the two are unrelated topics, in the same way that the rules of French grammar have no bearing on the history of ancient China.

Did God take an active part in "causing" the universe? I don't know, and I'm not particularly concerned about it.

  • @papafox

    "1) I describe myself as a non-denominational Christian."

Okay. A) But what specifically makes you a Christian in the first place? B) What do you believe about God and Jesus?

"3) If their dogma conflicts with observed physical reality, then it's their dogma that's at fault, not science."

    C) What is your position on miracles? D) Can they be explained by science (i.e., virgin birth, Christ raising Lazarus and Himself from the dead, etc)?

    E) What is faith?

  • @papafox 1 of 2

I saw your video on your channel, but it did not seem to clarify your statement here: "Well, like most Christians I accept the fact that we evolved from previous species." Are you saying you are a Christian? If so, what specifically makes you a Christian?

And I fully understand the Catholic Church agrees with evolution, but I'm not Catholic, so that means nothing to me. Also, hasn't the Catholic Church been incredibly wrong about scientific matters before (i.e., Galileo)?

  • @papafox most Christians? Most Christians where? Certainly not in the US, where most deny it. I'm not sure of the figures for the UK. Fantatic video though isn't it! Francis Collins being the former head of this project, who I'm sure you know is a Christian. If you want to make a human, just design a factory that can both read all of those books and then assemble complex biological machines :P Can't be that hard right?

  • @TheHonestTheist Stats vary widely, but the high number I've seen is that around 46% in the US reject evolution (and many of them don't even know why). The figure for Christians in most other countries is much lower.
