Wow...What a hockey play! Even if I'm not a Sabres fan, I get emotional every time I watch this. This is why we love hockey! What a pass by Lafontaine and a crazy move by May over BOURQUE!! And of course that crazy commentator at the end, perfect hockey moment!
I like at 7:04 when May makes the move around Bourque. You can see the bench sitting and watching and as soon as he made the move, they all stand up in unison like they were sitting on whoopee cushions.
What a great come back! I will never forget that game. Tremendous game by Brad May. I cannot believe he is jobless now. A great player with a big big heart!!!
I'll never forget watching this game with my dad at 8 years old, then less then a year later meeting him at the Aud Sabres Open House... I said to Brad May great goal against the bruins goalie and then getting his autograph. Anyone remember how awesome it was at The Aud's Sabres Open House?
@thinkingjack , I'm not even a Sabres fan, but hearing this call brings tears to my eyes. I wish hockey was still like this, now (since the lock out in 2004)it seems like the refs are too involved and ultimately deciding many games instead of the teams and far too many penalties are called, just let them play.
@stubs96 i know exactly what your saying. But sadly with gary bettman is in charge hockey is becoming worse every year. Its a shame that he's ruined such a great game.
@sportsmania21 Hockey is NOT ruined because of Bettman; don't you still watch it anymore? Plenty of great, young players in the game today, but because everyone thinks Bettman "ruined" hockey, that's all you care about, is it?
@stubs96 Yeah, & then the refs will "let them play" then people will get upset again & say the refs aren't calling any penalties, which way do you want? "Call penalties" or "let 'em play"?
@ckendall67 I would never complain the refs aren't calling any penalties, personally I've never heard too many do that, some may complain one team is getting more penalties called than another. If you're asking me which way do I want it's a very definite "let 'em play", I think all games should be won by the team with no assistance from officials.
@stubs96 You say there are too many penalties called, but as soon as someone on your gets hooked or tripped, you'll shout "CALL THE PENALTY", won't you now? You only want penalties called against the other team, plain & simple.
@ckendall67 what makes you think "I only want penalties called against the other team" why would I want that, how would that be fair? would you really want your team to win because the official called more penalties against the other team? I HOPE you'd want your team to play well and win on their own without assistance from poor officiating, remember Wally Harris, he was the best ref and very consistant, at the end of a game if you can't remember the refs name, then you know he did well.
Moog's stats from the 92-93 regular season are absurd: 37-14-3, 3.16 GAA, .876 save percentage. That's a testament to how good the Bruins offense was for Moog to have a save percentage that shitty and still be 23 games over .500.
i remember this as it was yesterday. i actually cried after this goal. bruins had a great season only to choke in the playoffs. typical bruins playoff choke job. well the pats, celts and red sox came thru for me years later thank god.lol.
oh and another thing. this was a great era for hockey. the league was just so much more exciting back then.
@CanucksfanKyle Yeah, he was drafted 14th overall in 1990 and showed he could score in juniors but became more of the fighter we know now as a pro. Still had some of that offensive talent though and he embarrassed Bourque with that move.
Man those were the days...Howerchuck, Hasek, Poulin, Oates, Pat La fontaine and Alexander Mogilny, man was he good and man were they a good duo! And holy crap what a great goal by Brad May
God I still get chills watching this. To be honest, one of my first memories. I was 5 years old and had no clue why my dad was cheering at the TV. Lafontaine was unreal.
Thank you so much for posting this. I grew up with the Sabres, and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when this happened, and how excited I was, Although the Sabres are strugglers, and no Cups yet, I have faith. And I will always love 'em.
"Mayday!" is also used when combat planes are in peril...they use mayday as a call for help. The fact that RJ said it over and over sounds like a reference to that.
@SumProIAm I think it's just a play on his name, but May-Day used to be a pretty big occasion in the Soviet Union. It does have the added effect of being the phrase used by pilots when their plane is in distress. To this day, there haven't been many OT goals scored in the playoffs (especially a nice goal) by someone less suspecting than Brad May. Deffinitely a top 10 goal call in hockey - or even all of sports. So exciting. I'd put it up there with Dan Kelly's call on Lemieux's winner in 87.
good god---Pat LaFontaine, Richard Smehlik, Brad May, Alexander Mogilny, Dale Hawerchuck, Dominik Hasek----besides 06 i think 93 was your best year Buffalo.....
Looks like your Sabres are coming on strong again and pushing for the playoffs this year. I love the young talent on Buffalo. Good luck to you guys. Here's hoping for a Vancouver - Buffalo Stanley Cup Final!
With the economy the way it is in Buffalo, with the depression, with the lack of faith, Buffalo needs this again. Not necessarily the Mogilny, LaFontaine, Hasek, May group, but a team that us Buffalo fans can believe in and get excited about again.
i totally understand u.....im a flyers fan and ive been through many games agasint u sabres in the past where im on the edge of my seat.....but the days of really cohesive buffalo teams are behind u.....your best chance was in 06 ion my opinion, i really thought u were gonna win the cup...tough break against canes....gonna be a while in buffalo
And with Hasek in net? Where is the Cup? In the next series Buffalo was swept by Montreal... Sabres still should have won it against Dallas--bullshit call on Hull's goal.
Swept in 4 games by all 4-3 scores, including 3 overtime games I believe. They could score 'em at will, but that 1992-93 team could give them up easily too.
This could be one of the top 10 plays/goals of all time. From start to finish, what a damn play. I remember watching this as a kid and seeing May kiss his stick a few minutes before...simply awesome.
I know this is called the "May Day" game, but you could also argue that this game could be called "A Star Is Born," since it showed the world what Dominik Hasek can do.
that was so dirty... that goal probably felt amazing... in OT huge undressage on bourque. then walks around the goalie and shoots it in empty side... i dont kno what goal would feel better then that, most goals are either a beauty that means nothin, or just a big OT garbage goal. this was an overtime beauty. Actually, This isn't Ted Darling, Darling Retired afyter the 91-92 season after worsening alzhimers disease, this is john gurdler and jim lorentz on the old empire sports network
I thought sabres were going to the cup this year lafontaine mogily hawerchuk and fuhr in net. Mogilny and lafontaine both got injured in game 2 against the canadiens and then they had no chance of winning that series if that didnt happen they would of beat monteal then islanders for sure and also the kings. That yeah should of been buffalo's cup
God, John Gurtlers play by play is horrible, I almost forgot how horrendous he was! Almost as bad as the new "BuffaSlug" uni's. Long live the "real" Sabres emblem and Rick Jeanneret!
What was this 1993? I was 7 yrs old at the time but it sure is an experience looking back at some of this stuff and why winning the cup this year is going to matter so much to all of us. Go Sabres!
some people are just retarded, first the idiot thats saying the only reason the sabres win because the opponents start their backups? your a jackass... maybe its the balance of talent and chemistry on the team...just maybe and second of all, i get it if your a bruins fan, but throwing past cups in our face to compensate for you guys sucking now??? low dude
thats it, lets compensate for your shitty ass team now by throwing past victorys in our face, or why dont we just see where the regular season takes it?? and be sure to tell your team to bring their starters (dumbass)
hey this isnt't saying much since the bruins only have 5 Stanley Cups but i was just wondering how many cups the Sabres have.. oh thats right they dont have any..
elburrodiablo your a retart and you don't know shit about hockey there is 25 games left and their only 10 points out of 4th place..
RETART?? I think your're the "RETART" asshole. Buffalo owns the Cup this year. Quit living in the past moron. It is today, Boston is a joke, as are the fans and the city!
i would like to see buffalo get the cup but we dont "own" anything... cmon man dont hop on the bandwagon even this far into the season there is still ALOT of hockey to be played
He kissed his stick before he scored the goal. That's what makes it so great. He hadn't scored in something like 18 games but still knew he could do it
Some of the goals in this game are real softies indeed. Again, the best memory of an O.T. winner between these two teams *for me* was an Adam Oates goal straight from the face-off just the year before this.
BTW - the final shot with the kiss on the stick is just too cheezy.

Go Sabres!

some people are just retarded, first the idiot thats saying the only reason the sabres win because the opponents start their backups? your a jackass... maybe its the balance of talent and chemistry on the team...just maybe and second of all, i get it if your a bruins fan, but throwing past cups in our face to compensate for you guys sucking now??? low dude

I have RJ's Mayday call as the ringtone on my cellphone. Turns heads most of the time.

Can't be all that lucky. 8 players are out with injuries. Besides, they just make other teams starting goalies look like backups.

RETART?? I think your're the "RETART" asshole. Buffalo owns the Cup this year. Quit living in the past moron. It is today, Boston is a joke, as are the fans and the city!
Ginoinny 5 years ago
i would like to see buffalo get the cup but we dont "own" anything... cmon man dont hop on the bandwagon even this far into the season there is still ALOT of hockey to be played

He kissed his stick before he scored the goal. That's what makes it so great. He hadn't scored in something like 18 games but still knew he could do it

Jim Lorentz is speaking with great clarity and foresight. He sounds a lot more knowledgable than he does now--what happened?
wontonnoodle23 5 years ago
I'd kiss my stick too....he had not scored a goal in like 4 months plushe just scored a playoff OT winner
aaronmysterio 5 years ago
Some of the goals in this game are real softies indeed. Again, the best memory of an O.T. winner between these two teams *for me* was an Adam Oates goal straight from the face-off just the year before this.
BTW - the final shot with the kiss on the stick is just too cheezy.
