  • Well maybe some Canadian Fishbowls were powered by modified 3-71s, I'm not sure.

  • @ford9572

Only buses you'd find a 3-71 would be some very short Old Looks.

  • @hallosuxforlife, Sorry to tell you this, But I don't think GM ever used 3-71s on the New Look Fishbowls, I seriously doubt that a 3-71 would have enough torque to move a 40 foot Fishbowl, GM first used 6V71s then 8V71s and then 6V92s I have book on them and there's no mention in there of any Fishbowl being powered by a 3-71, Sorry to bust your balls there Buddy!!

  • awsome sound.

    specialy the hillclimb piece.

  • GOOD OLE 3-71s

  • IF I HAD THE MONEY I WOULD BUY A COUPLE OF GM FISHBOWL TRANSIT BUSES 1959 1970 1980

  • @MrPotman2009 LOL! Now you're talking. I'd add some HKS t51R PTS Turbos, too

  • Very nice video. I am so visiting Calgary Transit before they retired the last of these beauties

  • Now, that's my sound. Why didn't I hear it on the back-in-the-day MTA Blitz?

  • OMG they run those? Fucking amazing. Piece of history.

  • Sounds so good, sound just like the Toronto TTC's Fishbowls. I believe TTC still got nearly 200 of them.

  • Are they still using Fishbowls in Calgary ?

  • @Kaynos - Yes. Calgary still has 105 Fishbowls in operation. They only come out during the peak hours normally though. We still have 117 MCI Classics as well.

  • @busrailfan How long are the Calgary's Fishbowls are going to be running for? I was told that MCI Classics are going to be active about 8 more years.

  • @qwandiddy - Well, Calgary still has 104 Fishbowls remaining in service and they are still fixing some of them up with rebuilt engines and body work. How long they will be around for is hard to know. 40 Nova LFS forty footers are to start arriving next month and 30 for next year. It is unknown how many are for replacement or expansion of any sort at this time.

  • Great Stuff! 5*

  • Oh yeah - and some of these buses, if I recall, let you ring the bell repeatedly until the driver yells at you. :-)

  • @AlbertaGamer not true they dont

  • There are some hard-core bus fanatics on this site. Some of you even have favorite engines and engine noises!

One advantage of these buses is that they don't seem to get stuck in snow as easily as those low-floor buses.

  • I still can't believe that "our" fishbowls are gone. I'm so hurt by that. I can't stand these "Plastic Buses" that these companoes now make because they don't last as long as the fishbowls & the Flxible New Looks. Miss that Genuine quality GM use to make. GM...If you can read this; "Please Bring Back The Fishbowls The Way Ford & Chrysler Brought Back The Mustang & Challenger. Great Video My Friend.

  • ok ima total newb when it comes to the whole fishbowl design....whats it all about?...i only watched this vid to hear the detroit diesel engine lol

  • It starts to sound nice at 1:03

  • First and formost, GM Created the New Look "Fishbowls" in 1959 & ceased production in 1983. Just didn't see too many of them in the States. I only saw the last model made (Fishbowls) in 1983 was in Denver's The Ride fleet.

  • Actually the last Fishbowls were built in 1986 for Santa Monica.

  • Thanks for that update My Friend. I know i was somewhere right in the park LOL!

  • Cool....all I could think about is the movie speed...everyone look forward don't make any sudden moves.

  • It sure would be nice if Calgary Transit kept these buses! I don't know if you've ever taken the 301 in the winter, but the heating in the new buses is almost non-existent. In these old buses you almost roast (which is a h*ll of a lot better than freezing!

Every so often one of these will show up for the 301, and then I know it's going to be a great day.

  • When was this filmed? I guess they retired all the buses in Calgary by now? Did the passengers mind you filming this?

  • It appears to be filmed in late 2007.

Yes, as of August 2009 there's still many of these buses around in Calgary. You might see one every second day or so, but they're around. Sort of like Checker Cabs eh?

  • it sound like the retired 1987 nova buses here

  • I remember these buses in San DIego in the 1980's and early 90's before they replaced them with gilli's, nabi's and new fliers

  • These great old buses are so much better than all that plastic modern crap theyre pumping out these days.

    Great video :)

  • Well said. I cannot agree with you more. These old fishbowls were common in New York City and Boston and I took them as a kid well into my teens. I miss them.

  • Montreal retired them all back in 2002, but a few of them were spared before that thankfully. We have 4 in our collection and a private collector has one other. I see this Calgary bus has quite a few modern bus features, like the destination box in the rear, the stop request in the front and the plastic wall behind the driver. Montreal left them almost original from when they first got them. But I like you kept the cushiony seats. Very New Lookish! The sound is a bit deeper than ours was though.

  • in 1997 Saskatoon retired the fishbowl buses from 1964-1976 we still fave the ones from 1977-1982 idk when thos are going to die we also retired our flyer D900-10240's thos are not in site

  • wonderful!

  • I have to move to Canada to kick it with these real buses like New Looks like this and MCI Classics, they're my favorites. I miss these buses in Chicago and New York City

  • I love these kind of buses. Way more then the new ones. Im sad to see them go :'(

  • in my town we just got gillig phantoms and low floors

  • Are you sure the transmission of this bus is automatic? It sounds more like a standard shift to me. The GM bus even sounds like it stops twice after going over 50 mph.

  • nice little ride. Interior lights should be off, but i guess its the law to run headlights on in Canada.

  • Like in New York city the interior lights of city buses are mostly allways on.

  • Love to see more videos of Gm fishbowl buses made in Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto, and Vancouver.

  • should have gotten the girl in the black to take her top off! No, seriously - great video - love the fishbowl's noisesQ

  • This is beautiful

  • This fishbowl sounds nices when it's slow.

  • I agree with metrotransit and baul. This reminds me of being on the CTA (chicago) in 1993-94 on the #53 Pulaski bus as a freshmen in HS. They got rid of the fishbowls about a year or so after...I need to find someone with the 80's and 90's greyhound bus engines.

  • Sounds Like a LACMTA 1981 GMC RTS-04:)

  • Aw my god, I love that beautiful sound of the 6V71 engine! Wonderful video, and the transmission is the V730 or the VS2-6?

  • The transmission is a V-730. The only Calgary fishbowls to use the VS-2-6 were #651-655 (1971) and #844-853 (1975).

  • I thought the motor would blow up at the 1:00 point until it shifted into 3rd. Baltimore only had 2-speeds until the new-look flxibles in 1975.

I also thought that GM shifted to the RTS in 1977. I also found out yesterday that the old-looks continued production until 1969, vs. 1959?; but under who?

Did this bus have the GM nameplate, or was it just retro-fitted in 1980? The tranny definitely sounds like one from a late model Flxible.

  • When was this video recorded?

  • Mid-August 2007
