Let's not forget Phil did release a single recorded in Kenya in 1973, and that he continued to perform all through the 70s. His Gunfight at Carnegie Hall album, recorded in 1969, was released in Canada in 1975 and was his actual "last" album. And his last major event, which he organized, was in Central Park in May 1975 for the end of the war in Vietnam.
I love Phil Ochs. Just watched his 2010 biography which is available on Netflix streaming. He has been a source of inspiration to me my entire adult life. I will miss him always. Phoenix. Of Blue Phoenix Radio and themuseslair
Sadly they stared & sank in their chairs and searched for a comforting notion.
And the rich silver walls looked ready to fall As they shook in doubtful devotion.
The ice cubes would clink as they freshened their drinks, wet their minds in bitter emotion. And they talked about the ringing of revolution!
Down on our knees we're begging u please, sorry for the way you were driven. There's no need to taunt just take what you want, & we'll make amends, if we're living.. BUT ONLY THE DEAD R FORGIVEN.
Yeah and is anyone home? just put up more of his great songs. I mean he was so much more than a protest singer .. yeah like like rolling pin bob dylan. His melodies were so creative and beautiful. I am tired of hearing I aint a marchin, love me I'm a liberal , outside a small circle, of being praised as if that is 1/100ths of Phil's contribution to us. Phil is as good as Dylan .. ask Mr Neil Young .. his exact words.
Good song. I forgot and thought this had a country sound. Anyone who can write this is demonstrating there is one more song. If Phil had taken pills for his depression he could have lived out his life. His dad shot himself in the head. He had a backlog of treasure trove songs and had 50 great songs. This is good, not great. Great for anyone else, just good for Phil; live on in dreams.
@Ken Burch....do you know about any footage of Phil's SUMMER 1970 Vancouver appearance???? I was there but so far NOTHING remains of that appearance ;=(
Missing his voice today on the anniversary of his death...I watch this video frequently so I thought I'd stop in today once again. This song and video say it all...
@meryt114 Great comment about Phil Ochs. Just discovered him a little over a year ago, just can't get enough of his music. Understand completely how you feel. His songs were so brilliant, it's almost as if he was from another world.
@VJ254 I know, I feel exactly the same way! I listen to his music all the time and I've been working on collecting all of his records because I've grown to prefer listening to his songs that way. I sometimes can't believe the lyrics he would write because he seemed so ahead of his time. Something just clicked between me and his music and I wish he were here today still writing songs...
So sad since this was the last song he wrote before he killed himself. Basically his suicide note. Almost makes me want to cry every time I hear this song.
Probably intentional foreshadowing. Phil most likely felt that life was already a dead loss at this stage.
Thanks to John Byner for putting Phil on his show. Does anybody know if this actually made it on tv? Phil was pretty much blacklisted from the American boob tube.
@KennBurch Yes, it aired on Byner's show in 1970. This footage was also later used for an A&M promotional film called "Love it or Leave It". Phil was never formally blacklisted from TV like Pete Seeger was, but he didn't get many broadcast opportunities, and when he did, he wasn't always allowed to play what he wanted. When he was on the Midnight Special in the early 70's, the network wouldn't let him sing Here's To The State of Richard Nixon.
You should be informed if you do not realize, the man with the stethascope is John Byner, allways up to antics on the show in his name. Oh yeah, great footage of the man "Phil Ochs".
I first heard Phil in the middle 1960's at the Berkeley Folk Festival. Even got some talking time with him after a panel discussion and at a party after the campfire concert. Caught a couple of concerts later, but the dark edges were already starting to widen. Phil said it best: God help the troubadour who tries to be a star.
It's incredible that people have these ancient videos. Thank you so much for posting it. YouTube has been my first opportunity to see Phil speaking and singing on camera. What a privilege.
Such, such sad lyrics, especially where it sit's in Phil's discography...the last song of his last album, and then him eventually taking his own life.
Was wtg to go onstage when news of Phil's death came.(I was known for "Love Me...Liberal.") The backdrop for the stage, was a HUGE flag...
Changed my whole set to only Phil's, began w/ "Liberal" & ended w/ "When I'm Gone."
As the last strains of the latter drifted off, a *gasp* travelled thru the audience. Only later I learned the brackets holding the TOP of the flag had given 'way & the flag *slowly* wafted upside down--into the "universal distress" symbol. (Just got chills,'member'g)
Sean Penn said in his recent Rolling Stone interview that he still wants to make the film about Phil's life. I'm assuming he means as the producer or director, although a young Penn would have made a good choice to play Ochs.
I have been wondering if he gave up on the idea. I heard him say it quite a few years ago and I am happy he still wants to do it. People who aren't familiar with Phil should know how special he was and people who do know him would be glad for the recognition of a great singer, songwriter and true American hero.
I think Jake Gyllenhaal would be great playing Phil in the movie. There's a remarkable resemblance and Jake was born on Phil's birthday 40 years later. this film needs to be done!!!
According to The Google, this was from a 1970-71 musical variety show hosted by John Byner called "Something Else".
Something else, indeed. Talk about symbolism. Makes me want to pick up the phone and call Phil's therapist, even though I know I'm 33 years too late. It's brilliant, though. Wonder who filmed it?
If you do, let us know, please. This song will never stop tearing me up. Such beauty, such tragedy, and he foretold his own death. This appeared on his final record.
@ponderful i cant think of the guy with a stethescopes name but he is a comedian and he used to do impressions of ed sullivan hosting on the best of sullivan ironic because phil ochs was banned from being on shows like that and the last ed sullivan show had roland kirk who played atonal jazz that went over the audiance head .
Who knew Phil Ochs made a music video of his swan song and filmed it in this horribly sad, desolate place? This is as depressing as it is fascinating. Thank you very much for posting.

Nice melody .. but once there were lyrics of greatness....
In a building of gold, with riches untold,
lived the families on which the country was founded.
And the merchants of style, with their red velvet smiles,
were there, for they also were hounded.
And the soft middle class crowded in to the last,
for the building was fully surrounded.
And the noise outside was the ringing of revolution.
11xzxzxz 8 months ago
The earlier song Rehersals For Retirement was his suicide note. This was his apology for what he perceived to be his failures.
In some respects, it's remarkable he survived as long as he did.

It's a shame the audio and video are out of sync, especially the part at 1:42.
There's a bit of this video (in good quality) in the recent documentary There But For Fortune.
