Johnny Guarnieri was a terrific pianist; he played with Prez and also with Benny Goodman; Goodman always had terrific pianists; Jess Stacy, Teddy Wilson, Johnny Guarnieri and Mel Powell, to name a few; terrific.
I love that this recording uses a Count Basie like sound for the rhythm and overall tone of the session; very well done!
AWESOME does not even begin to describe it. I need to search the dictionary to find a word that multiplies that word by maybe a thousand. WOW.
Never heard this one before. I was surfing looking for Guarnieri with Harpsichord. I have a few but this is just ... oh damn. I feel like Durante looking for that lost note. I'm looking for a lost word. May have to make one up.
@betteroffsingle I agree with you !!! Have you heard about the CD "Lester Young -THE COMPLETE SAVOY RECORDINGS" ? After listening to this, you should buy it ! There are FOUR versions of this tune on it, and many many more !!! A pure bliss ! You can find it on Amazon, that's how I got it myself - Enjoy !!!
Imo this song carries in itself all the joy and hope of mankind as World War II was ending at last, after so many years of horror and suffering ! Each time I'm listening to this song, I feel better and joyful ! These guys were giants !
Oh man, relatively clean recording of this classic Johnny Guarneri orchestra session for Savoy. I'm lucky enough to have both Savoy label 78's (#'s S-509 & S-511) comprising this session. If you have "Basie English" from this session, I'd recommend putting that one up as well.
Thank you Zorbazig. It certainly was some great and hardswinging jazz music. I got from my collection of Time Life albums. A set I invested in in the seventies. some 27 albums with 3 LP's each. If I live long enough i'll eventually put all these on youtube to help preserved the history of our great early jazz.
Please do it ! I'm "only" 50, but I'd like to share this with my kids and grandchildren ! I can't wait listening again to all 4 versions of "Exercise in swing" !... May God let you live till 120 !
...and excellent slideshow too ! Beautiful pics ! Thanx again ! For me, it's just one of the most wonderful piece of music of all times !... (and I'm very eclectic...)
THANX A LOT ERWIGAUDIO AND PRAISE BE TO YOUTUBE ! Decades I was looking for this masterpiece ! I've got it on a very old tape but I can't play it any more... By the way, there were 4 versions of this same song on the record... Could you PLEASE post them all if you've got them ? Thanks in advance... God bless you !

Lively piece of light swing music.
All the musicians are terrific.
Guarnieri must have fingers flexible but tough as steel to produce such a loud clear crisp sound.
What a lift the group must get being able to play like that !
