Both the parents and the children are bilingual. Vanessa speaks to the children in French mostly when Johnny is not at home, but as soon as he gets home they transfer to English. Johnny learned French to speak to Vanessa's parents, and also because he was scared that since he was stationing his family to live a lot of their time in France, that he should know the language of the country and the second language which their children would be raised to speak.
