The real skills in riding anything overhead and above is 1. the power to paddle in and 2. making the drop, these riders have had those factors removed and so are no better than wakeboarder being pulled up a river! A guy paddling into a 10ft wave deserves more respect than some tool being dragged onto a 50 footer.
I disagree, check out the paddle-in guys in this video, I'm not saying I could do it, my limit is at 7-8' and I'm happy enough with that, but these guys are just in a different league to tow-in.
@inch75 do you surf? jw.. and paddle surfing is making a comeback, people are starting to paddle into bigger and bigger waves. Some waves are just too big though... and you have to tow in. Also you cant paddle in on a tiny board like their using here on these waves.
\m/ yooo from NYC not miuch goin on the east coast but hurricane season is here so hopin for some good liquid vibrations!! Really cool vid! Siiiickkk!
Yeah with, tow-ins and techno wetsuits, there are probably hundreds of big waves worldwide we didn't know about that are waiting to be ridden. I just want to see someone try to surf the Potato Patch off of SF. Unfourtanetly the tides are vicious.
People have ridden it before. Theres a reason people dont ride it. Not only is the water freezing. That area is so sharkey. And who knows whats on the bottom.
It's a series of shallow sandbars and rocks that form a crescent shape about 1-2 miles off SF. Lots of good sailing tales about that place. Size wise, it can get just as big as Mavericks down the coast, but not nearly as ideal. Think vicious tides and a shipping lane right next to you.
a year or two ago some pro surfers discovered a spot in the Faroe Islands (north west of Scotland) that they named "Thor's Hammer". It was 20 foot and hollow when they saw it and the boat captain with them who'd been sailing the area for over 30 years said he'd seen it way way bigger. You heard it here first.
Supposedly an 80-100ft. rogue set mowed through Mavericks the day Burle scored and wasn't anywhere near rideable. These height estimations are so vague but it seems 70-80 is the rideable limit even at Jaws or Cortes. Shit and I'm still scared of going out when it's 10 feet!
Cortez Bank is where the first 100 ft wave is going to be surfed. Think about it...it gets deep ocean swells before they get weakened...it's in the pacific...the last big storm (which dropped 10 feet of snow when it hit california) four surfers went out there in a little boat and surfed 85 foot+ waves...and this spot has only been surfed a couple of times.
totally agree man - either there or that random break near france that has also been surfed a handful of times that holds rediculous heights . its not a case of if - its a case of when . . . and boy im lookin forward to seeing it ! - brass balls to the dude who claims it too ! :)
The biggest wave ever ridden IMO was Peter Mel at Maverick's on 10/28/99. The pic is rediculous. Clearly an 80ft+ face. I've never seen anything at Mav's that big since. Not even Burle's XXL wave out there.
sorry bro! Maverick's can't support an 80ft face. Places like Jaws or Cortez can, Maverick's can't. If you are aware of the underwater topography of these locations, you would understand.
Well, it was bigger than Burle's wave which the Billabong "experts" were calling 68ft. Cali. Explain though. I know Jaws moves faster due to Hawaii's position in the ocean and lack of canyons and deeper water.
to noobertuber, your taking crap if you reckon Jaws pulls 70footers you do realise thats 30m plus, biggest wave jaws has had was 28th Jan 1998 and even that was just 30-50ft faces. And jo0o0o0o0 Cortes may be big but i am sure it is not the worlds biggest break.
Umm I am completely disregarding your comment since you can't even compute simple conversions... 70ft approx = 23 meters. And you must've never seen footage of the infamous 'big tuesday' at Jaws...
OK, first off let me just tell you thats you left the dumbest comment I have seen all day. Cortes Bank one of the newest spots for tow-in surfing in the world, it's waves compare to Jaws and Teahupoo combined. It is 100 miles off the coast of San Diego making it a very unique place. And it does have the biggest wave even though there are no "offshore" winds as there are in Maui.
Wow what a rush ! AWESOME

True, it's not a surf spot. Unless you're the Doc. He knows what's up out there.

@EarlMcCrackin It's actually a mountain range about 100 miles out to sea west of San Diego.

That´s a big wave spot. But it doesn´t compare to jaws. Jaws is almost the double size of that waves
