They both are fly by wire controlled. But airbus made it better. More fuel efficient A340-300 range is 13,700 km IL96 is with max payload is 11,500 km and with max fuel is 13,500 km.

THEY made it better!

It flies beautifully,and handles great! A340 more fuelefficient? You are wrong about the distances. il96 can with max fuel fly 15000 km and is powered with P&W PW2000,and A340-300 can fly 13700km.

In my eyes thats the same as saying they suck! Russians build strong solid machines! You can see it on the Il-96,Tu204/214 and Antonov An148.. Sukhoi Superjet 100... Im positive,that alot of western airlines are missing out on something not ordering this GREAT aircrafts!

It's all politics and deals under the table. Even in civilian aviation lots of airlines are given certain "benefits" from buying certain planes. Since the mere idea that an European airline would use Ilyushin or Tupolevs (which would have perfect safety records if maintained by professional airlines which don't skip service) makes European manafacturers cringe, things are already settled beforehand.

Look what the Detroit auto industry has been getting away with these last 3 decades.

@KushPizzaSleep There are many design similarities between the two planes, the nose section is virtually identical and the il-86 isn't that much bigger than the A300. The only reason it uses 4 engines is because the Russians couldn't and still can't develop an engine powerful enough to rival the West. The il-86 could cope just fine with two modern Western turbofans
