If anyone reads this, realize the time they said, late 1980's and early 1990's BMW on average at this time only had 3 different keys per model, and as an example we own two Chevy Suburbans one is a 92, and a 93, both have the identical keys to open the door, and start the ignition at the time it wasn't uncommon to have a generic key per make & model.Nowadays the worst thing you can do with a newer vehicle is use your electronic remote in a bad area, it can be recorded, and played back.

because on these high end cars, the physical key isn't unique from another and will only fit into that car a lot of the time. The security feature is in the car's computer where only the key that matches with it electronically will start the car. So if they can disable the computer, they can start it with just any key for that car.
