  • I was living in Miami and I used to call on my birthday and have this song played for me and my 2 friends w the same bday to the local jazz station. The DJ was China Vallis. He got to knowe me after 20 years of this request on december 9th very year.

  • Used to play this in the late 70's - early 80's, lay down, close my eyes and just block out the world.

  • Its a dream of mine to sing this with Mr Mangione onstage :)

  • I had the honor to be at this concert. This song made the hair on the nape of my neck stand up!

I have been a giant fan of Chuck Mangione and his brother Gap since the 70's and never get tired of the music..or the way the music makes me feel, even to this day! :)

  • The only thing better is seeing it performed live. Living it breathing it embracing it.

  • GorGeous!

  • My Land, The land of Make believe, I now know the secret, Thanx for the answers.

  • I first heard this piece in 1973 when I was getting clean from heroin. My friends helped me and in turn I helped my friend Kenny get clean. We passed it on to one another. This song did for me what heroin couldn't do.It addressed my inner land of make believe. The deep dark, secret emotional and psychological spaces where heroin couldn't reach.Kenny is no longer with us.He couldn't find that spot. Thank you for helping me get my life back, God, Chuck, and Ester s. Love, Richie F.

  • what a wonderful melody!!

  • thanks for posting ...steve gadd along with a host of great musicians are on stage....

  • Absolutely wonderful illustrations! I love this song. It describes nothing better than unity, diversity, and love. Absolutely amazing job. Thank You so much. If more people would listen to this beautiful piece, perhaps, just maybe, we would love each other, and respect each other, just a little more. Thank you for posting!

  • What a magical song. I heard it for the first time in college in 1973 and it still moves me to tears 38 years later. Timeless! Happy Birthday Chuck Mangione!

  • A marvelous piece. Please listen to the words as magnificently presented by Esther, followed by the haunting sounds of Mangione' s horn, penetrate your soul and make you want to weep, Wonderful stuff, indeed.

  • Yes. This IS one of the best performances of the 70s (1980s too). This albumn, Land Of Make Believe, is one of my all time favorites. And THAT'S saying a lot. It is exquisite! A series of excellent performances, or just one great concert. Whichever, this entire record is a marvel. Thanks MrCapoCorn. If any song needed to be shared with others, this is it. And by the way, listen to El Gato Trieste. ^_^

  • very poignant

  • I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS COMPOSITION FOR OVER 30 YEARS. I NEVER GET TIRED OF IT, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS....EVER PLAYED. ♥♥LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE IS ETERNAL♥♥

  • Thanks. I saw Mangione often in the 70's. He, along with Maynard Furguson were my favorite horn players, and still are. Uplifting song!

  • quite a piece of music, wow...

  • I see 2 Bieber fans ;-)

  • First time I've ever heard Esther. She is very reminiscent of Dionne Warwick to my ears.

  • Thank you. Many of us remember when / where we were when we first heard it. It moved me to my soul. Then and now. What a beautiful, wonderful work.

  • The Place That We All Want To Go To

    Land Of Make Believe.

    Dr. D

  • Esto es una obra maestra. Lo tuve cuando salió en disco por primera vez. Qué recuerdos! Me fascina esta cancion y el arreglo espectacular, aparte de la voz de Esther Satterfield es maravillosa.

  • MrCapo, thanks for uploading this! A nice clean recording of truly one of the best 1970's performances from any music genre. Nice video too. Good job!

  • I have two of the albums, one never opened the other only played to record to cassette . I also have it on CD. I may buy another, just in case.

  • SMASHING performance!

the Vid that took much time to tie together - "top flight" thanks - jp

  • Truly one of the greats. I used to have the LP. It's one of those performances that you know is a long running hit the first time you hear it. They used to play this kind of music on FM radio stations, that's where I first heard it. Other greats from then: Deodato, Gabor Zabo, Roger Kellaway.

  • I have been looking for this for ages.Thank You.--an avid Mangione fan

  • Speakless

  • Pure magic!

  • Mr Capo - kudos to a job well done. This brings back many memories - I saw Chuck in high school in the 70's - his music is mesmerizing. Our daughter is going through some difficult issues right now, and this is really soothing and peaceful as well.

  • A place where no one dies is good enough for me, we can deal with the rest of the imperfections; that type of Heaven or afterlife would be ideal,'cause there would still be some work to do place for growth.

  • Growing up in Rochester, NY Chuck's home town--you knew his music well! This brings back so many memories of my childhood and this playing on the hi-fi. My mother was huge fan and when she died I picked Bellavia for her memorial music. It was written for his mom and a great song as well....

  • My mother use to play this song all the time, when I was a kid and I loved it then and I still love today..thanks for the post

  • CHUCK MANGIONE WAS INTRODUCED TO ME IN THE EARLY 70'S AND I WAS CAPTURED FROM THE DAY ON...

  • The memories hearing this song invokes literally causes tears of both sadness and Joy. The Joy is the memories of the days when this was played by REAL DJ's, DJ's that played Vinyl. The sadness stems from it being so very long ago. Thank you so very much for posting this truly exemplary song.

  • Beautiful!

  • @TheCalebson FEEL GOOD TUNE!

  • Know what's really cool about this song (well besides everything)? The low brass at 10:32

    LOVE IT!!!!!

  • Wow, dig this.

I just read the credits for this song.

Joseph Crupi conducted this song. He was a staff member at the Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Bard College just outside Kingston NY during the summer of 1981. He yelled at me one day in choir rehearsal because I made some type of comment that he misunderstood my intention for. I knew this guy for 1 summer 30 years ago.

  • This song brings back such good memories. i love listening to it with my eyes closed and just let the music carry you away. I always felt like i was flying. Thanks for posting it. I've been searching for this song for a long time.

  • I saw both of them at Playhouse in the Park in Philly,in theatre in the round.around 1973. They must've done this,I don't have to get high to listen to this now.soprano sax was with group, forget his name(Neiman?)

  • @playboatify

Gerry Niewood was the soprano saxophonist. Sadly he passed away in a plane crash two years ago on his way to perform with Chuck. Also killed was Chuck's guitarist Coleman Mellet.

Regarding Esther; her voice is truly inspiringly beautiful. What amazes me is her diction. Most people don't finish words. She on the other hand pronounces every "T" and "G" (for example) that most would leave off the end of a word.

  • @knightflyte Gerry Niewood was one of my favourite soloist, his solo in this song is a complete history, RIP

  • This version is fucking ridiculous. Fucking ridiculous. The most beuatiful, epic and uplifting song Ive ever heard. and Ive heard a few. Amazing

  • @dibble1973 You're damn right - OMG - I saw him in high school. This is just simply a total WOW!!!

  • Pure MAGIC!!

  • excellent!!! thank you!!!!

  • Sang to me for the first time in 2011 and this song is so special , right time and right place...and so ethic...I love it..Denis..Ireland

  • this is absolutely the best rendition of this song I've ever seen, and deserves at least another billion views!

    thanks Mr Capo :-)

  • Amazing-after all these years listening to this track- when the break comes the hairs on the back of neck go UP. Fabulous

  • awesome, I love it!!! ´Without any doubt a great masterpiece. Thank you so much for posting.

  • Very nIce video. Thanks for posting this gem. Always enjoy hearing Esther, she is so seldom heard nowadays. A great sing along song. Was a morning drive tune for me and my children back in the day. DJs played it a lot in LA. I will certainly get a new copy for the new generation.

  • When I first heard this I bought the album and made a cassett. Thought about it a bit and bought a 2nd album, it has never been opened, wanted to have a spare. Twenty five years or so later I bought the CD just to make sure all bases were covered.

  • @ThePoolist talk about needing some back up insurance...lol...i've done the same thing with copies of "thriller", "purple rain", "kind of blue", etc......never again will i let folks borrow THE GOOD STUFF....i just make a copy of it and tell them to enjoy!

  • Yes, one of the happiest songs of all times.

  • My daughters would get dressed for school while listening to this song. Every time I hear it I get a knot in my throat. How I long for those days again. Now I can gift this song to my grandchildren and continue the love for music through them.

  • Magic music. May the future be in giving hope to children thru love, clean air, water, food and knowledge of peaceful ways to live together; sharing in earths abundance.... that's my dream.

  • Magic music.

  • I have loved this song since I first heard it in the 70's to this day whenever I feel down and I feel my world is crashing around me I play it and I immediatly cheer up!

  • This to me is a great piece. Everybody can find something to like. If only the world was this way

  • Cancion Linda! Me gusta la cantante y el trompetista. Bravo!

  • The Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra adds a perfect touch to it. You don't hear much from mangione but Jazz Musicians usually fond work in Europe and Japan so it's not surprising. This is one of my favorite versions of the song. The video gave it a nice touch for kids with the theme of Fairy Tales. Good work!

  • Soqui it was Dredo who sent this to me and I forwarded to you. Dredo heard me speak about this song by Chuck Mangione so much that he found this complete version and sent it to me as a Christmas present. I love it!!!!!! Esther Satterfield has other songs on YouTube must this one is a CLASSIC! I could hear this all day long! I have been listening to it since 1972. Mangione has recorded it without the vocals but as good as it sounds it doesn't compare to this one with Esther Satterfield.

  • Like this a lot! Make more music like this please...more like this!

  • Soqui, The Song was written and performed by Chuck Mangione. He recorded this with Esther Satterfield who is the vocalist. She's not singing much anymore, and I agree she has a great voice and can sing Jazz. She keeps up with the melodies as if she were one with the Flugelhorn that Mangione is playing. This song was performed along with the Hamilton, Ontario Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. You can download the CD in iTunes or in Amazon. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • @MrCapoCom - Thanks for posting this complete version. It's a treat !

  • Hey Sam thanks for sending this to me. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Love the singer even though I never heard of her before. WHo wrote the song? I wish they would play this on the radio instead all that junk with the same beat over and over again. Anyway thanks again!
