  • "...you don't shoot them good enough and they come back and come after you?"

That lady just created Dead Space.

  • nice piece of computing history, but omg, those guys are hicks!

  • music reminds me of panteras "this love" main riff.

  • @agrimm61 actually, a lot of doom music is inspired by metal music, a couple of them by pantera

  • lol doom 2 music for level 3

  • This doesn't sound like the kind of guy who'd make a type of game like Dikatana.

  • 286 !

  • boom!

  • The dying zombie sound in this early version is the same scream that the guards have in the SNES version of Wolf3d. :-D

  • I love how someone mentions the monsters being injured on the ground, but able to get back up.....eventually it got added in one of the Doom mods

  • @ZeF2007inc yeah and they probably thought she was stupid for saying it. they also had this feature in Blake Stone aliens of gold. Which used the wolf or doom engine

  • 4:40 thats the "Moster Condo" or "Waiting for J Romero to play" track from Doom 2! WoW I never knew they already made this track while making Doom 1 - just seems to have been left out from the first one.

  • Who's filming in this?

  • @why0isnt0this0workin In the description, it says Dan Linton from Software Creations.

  • first wallbang in FPS history @ :19

  • i would kill to get my hands on this version of the game

  • my personal favorite weapon is the torpedo launcher

  • Is it me or does Adrian Carmack sounds like Stephen King?

  • So this is what it's like to see Doom have frame rate problems. Wow.

  • 03:22 lol "shut up boys"

  • Wow, i love how amazed and excited they all are, i hope one day when the next generation of games come out we'll be excited again, graphics don't really impress people these days cuz its the norm to have really good graphics.

P.s the woman sounds really uninterested

  • These were simply the golden days in my life T_T

  • Lol over 200% health/armor... I wish I could reset time to these days...

  • @SilkyMuggs

If I'm not mistaken versons of Doom before 1.2 allowed you o have over 200% armour.

It's really interesting to see Doom before completion, i.e. E1M1 having some different areas, imps firing different projectiles, etc.

    Man I love Doom

  • @dronespace

I owned 1.1 and I think 200% armor is the highest. However one piece of trivia: 1.1 and 1.0 didn't have

the nightmare skill level. That came in 1.2.

  • @MICHAELJD6

Ah interesting. Although I rarely play DOOM on Nightmare skill, it is always good to have the option, as it's so damn hard. I don't think I'd ever be able to finish the game on Nightmare and that's great because I've always got a goal to aim for. Much better than if the game was too easy.

  • this makes me nostalgia so god damn hard i cant even explain it

  • Great footage. It's such a joy to hear the amazement of these people watching Romero play. And the sound effects he's improvising.

That reminds me, I really need to play the beta some time.

  • 04:25 "Waiting Romero to play" :D Now I know why they name that music like this. :3

  • FINALLY SOME REAL FOOTAGE OF BETA DOOM

  • 4:30 pantera this love!

  • I totally love this footage.. wish I were there,

  • From Wolfenstein, To Rage. Whenever this company releases something, it's always ground breaking.

  • even after all these years...still one of the best games out there.

  • The song at 4:30 is the intro to Pantera's "This Love"!

  • The music at 4:30 is the intro to Pantera's Cemetary Gates! Pretty sure that was'nt the final game.

  • There also seems to be music that was later used for DOOM 2 in this video.

  • not even doom sound efects i wonder when and how they made the demon sound efects

  • @dukenukemfanletsrock Some of them were made from scratch by Bobby Prince. (One he recalls being an early morning yawn that stretched his vocal chords). Some of the other sound effects were taken from a large library known as the series 5000 library I believe. Many of the demon sound FX are taken from that library and are in fact pigs and goats, other beasts of burden in their pens being restless.

  • @OpenMawProductions cool how do you know this are the your freins and youve got to eat you vagetables is on commander keen

  • So weird, E1M3 had music that wasn't even used in Ultimate Doom, but was used in Doom 2! Also it was funny how amazed they were back then, shows how far gaming's come since then.

  • look at that pixelated peek-window, holy shit the amount of detail is excessive, jaw drops! ...kinda funny

  • the second level -Nuclear Plant- really comes alive with the bad video quality, it looks like heavily bump mapped, reflections etc

  • was it rly so hard to add different sounds for dying enemies back then haha? :D very charismatic video ^^

  • Anyone else notice the "Subtitle Text Here"

    at 4:26? LOL!!!

  • I love how when they get a weapon or see enemies fighting, they're all like "WOAH! OMG! that's so awesome!!!!"

  • wolf 3d sounds on that beta!

  • "Torpedo Launchers..." XD

  • The lady gave an interesting idea a little before 04:00.

  • Hahaha. At the time computers couldn't handle Doom's graphics.

  • I feel so privaliged to see this. It's like I'm closer than I thought to making it in the game industry thanks to how unprofessional and easy they make their work seem.

  • @tar1982 You've gotta be optimistic and willing to have a lot of fun when your job is making video games!

In my very limited life experience (by comparison), the most successful strategy is to not take the whole thing too seriously and just stay true to the original concept. I think it comes down coming up with a good idea and just doing it. Don't get lost in the details. Your skills take care of that. If they can't, work on them and get back to your original idea when you've learned some more.

  • romero seems alot happier here than ion storm

  • It's great how enthusiastic you all sound when playing DOOM, you can tell everyone involved was excited about making the game, and actually releasing it. Thanks for creating such a timeless game, I still play it to this day, and the first time I played it was 1996 I believe. Great game!

  • I wonder if the ID guys were aware they were about to make video game history when they recorded this video.

  • "When they're down, theyr'e down." That all changed when id added the infamous Arch-Vile, didn't it? ;)

  • mind you, hysteria by muse souns like an e1m1 ripoff...

  • is it me, or does the music at 5:50 sound a hell of a lot like This Love by Pantera?

  • it does a bit indeed

  • lol i noticed id seems to rip off alot of bands with their music. Doom 2 has like 2-3 alice in chains ripoff songs in it.

  • its not a rip off dumb fuck it was supposed to sound like those bands because in the 90's that shit was hella-cool

  • @ANXIETY93 You said, "Supposed to sound like those bands"....to sound like them or exactly take the guitar riffs? Do you fucking play music at all? You are the dumb fuck who must be tone deaf. If you dont believe me ...listen to the song for the level "Barrels o Fun" - Then go listen to "Them Bones" by alice in chains. But whatever, grow up.

  • I love how excited they all are.

Everybody in this room knew this thing was going to be huge.

  • This makes me want to relive the early 90s. :(

  • "There are, like, these invisible creatures inside.

    But you can see them..."

    xD

  • lol yeah

  • @ThyCakeConsumed oddly enough, after playing so long

such a thing can make PERFECT sense.

  • WOW!! e1m3 has monster condo music from doom2! that midi sat around unused for a long time!

  • He has 203% health haha

  • i dont know why every one plays with just the keyboard, John Romero is using the mouse in this video.

  • I replayed the old Doom games in "Chocolate Doom" some months ago and used a WASD / mouse combo like I used to always do in Quake and Half Life and it worked great. Slightly slippery, but I got used to it. Definitely preferable to just keyboard.

  • There you go, so-called DooM purists, even John Romero HIMSELF uses the mouse!

  • Mouse freelook ftw!

But for my honor: autoaim OFF.

ty for sending me these links, pal!

  • no problem, man, and the mouse isn't freelook, you can only move left & right with it. well, forward and back, too. Autoaim has to be on. :P

  • Oh I never said it was the case without help of Zdoom features :p.

  • @TheRoboticFerret Fuck man when i played doom back in those days I was using AWSD

  • @ShatteredHawk lol yeah, I've used the standard controls like that too, but I'm one of those doomers that loves to use the keyboard controls (arrow keys, control, alt, space, and shift). :P

  • @TheRoboticFerret To be honest I didn't even know you could use the mouse with this game until recently haha. Was this the first game with mouse-controls and aiming?

  • @LordJimmy I couldn't really tell you.

  • @TheRoboticFerret What person in the right mind doesn't use the mouse??? Yeah man, it's great to know Romero used the mouse :)

  • @TheRoboticFerret

how was he able to use the mouse on doom...BETA??!!

  • @roxasfruit You can use the mouse on the original DOS Doom, too... Obviously he had it coded at that point. You can download (and play) Alpha versions of Doom, and I have; you can use the mouse on those too.

  • @TheRoboticFerret

    GRKKKKK

if there was a way to mod doom 95 with mouse......

  • @roxasfruit Not that I know of, but I prefer to avoid Doom 95 usually. However, DOSBox is extremely easy to use, and it runs Doom perfectly. Not to mention the tons of other source ports like Legacy, Edge, ZDoom, PrBoom+, etc, etc.

  • @TheRoboticFerret fuck yeah!

  • I have even more respect for Bobby Prince watching this. He truly realised what he was seeeing was new and clever, and all the immersive, technical and fun ways Doom was so unlike anything else that had come before. Mass kudos BP!

  • wow! this version is very similar to the real doom! amazing! it takes a large history of Id software cool!

  • i know that, but that music is not a bug only i fell strange listening that music on that map XD.

  • e1m3 music on nuclear plant??

  • Doom wasn't finished when this video was recorded. You can still see bugs and hidden areas that have been removed in the final version.

  • @djedditt I can't see them :D

  • The music from e1m3 was used later in Doom2

iam sure. The level was called monster condo. That music never appeared in Doom1.

  • theres doom2 map18 music here to

  • @redield21 Its based on a Pantera Song called This Love

    Great song

  • @redield21 definitely my favorite track

  • @redield21

waiting for romero to play on E1M3???!!!

guess id focused on the music and level design before fixing bugs, crashes, and final chips in of it
